Chapter 8 The Last Lesson

Every Monday afternoon, Paul Von Hindenburg would come to the military academy on time to teach everyone. Chen Tian and everyone were very interested in this afternoon's course. Because Hindenburg would tell them vividly about the Pakatan and Franco-Prussian Wars, especially the series of battles he participated in, and also explain the latest tactical ideas and weapon developments.

Chen Tian had basically not had much knowledge of the Prussia and the Franco-Prussian War before, and only knew that Prussia completed the unification of Germany through these two wars. But under the description of Lieutenant Colonel Hindenburg, he gradually understood the two wars.

This day was the last lesson in Hindenburg, and he talked about the battle he remembered most deeply in the Pakatan-Austrian War - the Battle of the Swamp Forest.

On the morning of July 3, 1866, the Swips Forest in the Czech Republic was as quiet and peaceful as usual, with no murderous aura at all. At this moment, about 15,000 Austrian soldiers from 49 infantry battalions were slowly approaching here with flintlock rifles in their hands. The forest was hidden in the forest with a considerable number of Prussian soldiers. These Austrian soldiers who were advancing would never have thought that the Swips Forest would become their huge grave. However, the cause was very simple, because the guns in the hands of the Prussian soldiers were different from theirs.

War is the best catalytic economy for weapons, and the development of technology also promotes the continuous improvement of weapon performance. In 1835, the Prussian Dresses successfully invented the rear-loaded rifle. The Dresses rifle used fixed-loading bullets, ending the history of fire and warhead assembly. Secondly, the Dresses rifle used a firing needle fire device, which is very similar to modern rifles. It ended the history of loading ammunition from muzzles for 500 years after the birth of the rifle.

In order to compete for German leadership, on June 20, 1866, Prussia and Austria invested a total of 500,000 troops to launch an unprecedented battle in modern European history.

The Prussian soldiers equipped with the Dresse rifle, under the command of the "Iron-Blooded Prime Minister" and the Chief of General Staff Moltch, used clever tactics and fierce firepower to defeat the Austrian army, which had always dominated Europe. On July 3, the Austrian army retreated to the territory of the Czech Republic, decided to counterattack. They sent 49 infantry battalions of soldiers to occupy the Swiep Forest, but this place must be their sad place.

During the battle, the Prussian soldiers lie on the ground with the Dresse rifle that can fire 6 to 7 bullets per minute, and open fire at the Austrian soldiers calmly and ruthlessly, while the Austrian soldiers can only operate the front guns in their hands in vain in the rain of bullets. This is undoubtedly a massacre, because the firepower of the 10,000 to 50,000 Austrian troops is equivalent to the firepower of the 40,000 to 50,000 Austrian troops.

After the battle, 4,580 Austrian soldiers were corpsed in the forest, 6,942 were injured, and 3,573 soldiers raised their hands to become prisoners. The thrilling Opp War ended in only 7 weeks. Prussia defeated Austria at the cost of losing about 10,000 people, creating conditions for the unification of Germany.

"Do you think weapons can determine the outcome of a war?" Hindenburg asked after telling this story.

"Of course, but not exactly. Sometimes the quality and morale of the army are also very critical factors!" a student replied.

"Also, the commander is also very important. Mediocre commanders often ruin an excellent army, just like Napoleon III and his staff!" Another student added.

"How do you become an excellent commander?" Hindenburg asked again.

"Excellent commanders need sensitive judgment, attention to the enemy, humble attitude, sufficient patience, and many more..."

"A good intelligence system is also needed!" It seems that Thomas is very interested in the intelligence system.

"Uh... you're right, intelligence is also very important. Know yourself and your enemy, haha!" Hindenburg raised his eyebrows.

"Then how do you view the role of machine guns? For example, Maxim heavy machine gun." Chen Tian suddenly asked.

"When the opponent is in a dense formation, the lethality of the machine gun is much greater than that of a row of rifles. The ridiculous Russians even stipulate that machine guns can only be used for defense operations and can only be used in specific areas, which is really stupid!"

Chen Tian nodded silently. It seemed that Hindenburg had a relatively correct understanding of machine guns. In fact, during the Battle of the Somme in World War I, the German army used Maxim heavy machine guns to shoot fiercely and continuously at the densely formed British army. The British army suffered nearly 60,000 casualties in one day.

“那么,我还想考考大家,在对方防御阵地构筑完善,又配有重炮的情况下,如果各位是指挥官,会采用何种战术突破对方呢?”兴登堡背着手,看着他的学生们,他想知道这些孩子在6年的军校生涯中都学到了什么.在他看来这些孩子也许会说“用更多的重炮轰垮他们”,或者“就这样对峙,拖垮他们”,但是这些孩子的回答让他开始惊讶不已.

"They are confused by the front, and then they are surrounded by two wings!"

"Truncate their backs and then use rumors to destroy their morale!"

"Use school balloons, or send a small group of assault troops to destroy their heavy artillery positions, and then slowly bombard their positions."

"After every shelling, attack a little, and then suddenly attack with all your strength without shelling!"

Hindenburg closed his eyes and nodded constantly.

"Concentrate all firepower to attack the enemy's weak defense line, then quickly pass through this position, and then in turn surround the enemy on other positions!"

Hindenburg opened his eyes and the classroom suddenly became quiet. Everyone was shocked by this strange thought. Then he began to look for the source of the sound, and finally his eyes were all on Chen Tian - the sound was made from him.

Chen Tian was helpless and pointed at Oli beside him. He felt that the current weapon situation seemed to be unlikely to use this kind of flash attack idea. After all, there was no concept of armored troops at this time. However, he still planned to build the tank before the First World War and use the flash attack tactics at that time. However, I don’t know why Oli suddenly had such an idea.

"Hahahaha! It's so whimsical!" Everyone in the classroom suddenly burst into laughter.

Hindenburg also shook his head and passed quickly. It’s not easy to use cavalry! I’m afraid that the opponent’s artillery is already preparing when you are bombarding with all your might! When you charge, the opponent’s artillery fire and the remaining machine gun firepower on the position will tear these poor cavalry to pieces!

Oli lowered his head aggrievedly and remained silent.

Chen Tian patted his shoulder and sighed softly: It’s talent!

"Your Highness, what do you think?" Hindenburg found that Chen Tian had not expressed his opinion yet, and he usually had the most questions in class, and he always expressed some unexpected opinions, but these opinions were very effective when he thought about them carefully.

"My opinion is the same as Oli!" Chen Tian said with a smile.

"Oh?" Everyone was surprised.

Even Oli looked up at Chen Tian in surprise.

"Oh! Okay, let's stop here today! I am very satisfied with everyone's performance. After Christmas, you will be studying at the Royal Army Academy. I hope everyone will study there with great care. You are the smartest students I have ever seen. The future of Germany depends on you!" Hindenburg raised his chest and said loudly to everyone.

"I hope when we meet again, I hope we can win together!"

"Thank you, instructor!"
