0316 [The Fourth Revolution of Film Technology]

Wan Xiaohu did not plan to visit the filming site of "Avatar". He mainly came to Vita Digital's special effects team to determine the shooting date. After agreeing on the time, he planned to go back to prepare for the crew and casting of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". In recent times, he must make full use of the time to complete as much work as possible.

After all, for him this year, there are too many important things to deal with. The baby in Jeon Ji-hyun's belly and the sea wedding with Su Ya will come one after another in the second half of the year.

If you don’t work hard now, these tasks will be backlogged until next year, and you will have to be overwhelmed by the time you go.

However, his plan still didn't keep up. James Cameron knew that he had come to the crew of "Avatar". During the filming interval, he came to the special effects team and personally found Wan Xiaohu to chat.

Wan Xiaohu treated this famous director as an idol when he was a child, and even now, he still admired this director very much. It was not just James Cameron who achieved world-renowned results, but because of James Cameron's focus on movies.

He had heard of the rumors about James Cameron. This guy is a tyrant on the set. He has a temper and doesn't give anyone any face. He often yells and even beats people on the set.

All the staff who worked with him hated him and scolded him.

However, his harshness of film cameras and perfection requirements definitely puts commercial directors like Wan Xiaohu ashamed.

In order to film "Titanic", in order to film "Titanic", he spent more than 50 million US dollars and invested heavily in building half of the same proportion of real ship. He even made his own underwater detector and went to dive deep-sea to shoot the wreckage of the Titanic in history.

If Wan Xiaohu was asked to take pictures, it would definitely be a fake model and then randomly simulate the wreckage of the shipwreck.

Of course, Wan Xiaohu admires James Cameron's perfect requirements for movies, but he does not agree with this concept very much. In Wan Xiaohu's opinion, many ways to save money and labor may not necessarily achieve worse results than those with strict requirements. Moreover, commercial films emphasize "how fast, how fast, how much saving" it is.

Needless to say, good and conservation are the best, everyone pursues it.

If there are more movies, the number of movies to be filmed will increase. Only when there are too many movies, the scale of money making will increase. If one movie does not make money, the other movie will make money and share risks. Multiple movies will also increase the development of peripheral products and drive the overall industrialization of the downstream.

Fast, the progress of filming is fast, like James Cameron. If you choose carefully and strive for excellence, you will make a movie for three to five years. This speed will definitely not meet the standards and the investment cycle is too slow.

Money can only be made while it flows, and money that cannot be flowed fully is not good money.

Large studios allow a movie to be prepared for four or five years, but their way is to write scripts in the early stages, select actors and directors, and do some market research. These do not require capital. When the filming process is officially entered, it will only take a few months to promote and then be released quickly.

Let the cash only go through the filming process and then quickly recycle it, instead of being intercepted by the film for three or five years.

If James Cameron hadn't made a movie, it would have been too profitable. Few film companies were willing to invest in him. Take "Avatar" for example. It started filming in 2005 and was released in 2009. With such a long cycle, the funds of 20 Century Fox were trapped in it for four or five years.

If it weren't for the box office hit in the end, Twentieth Century Fox would probably have only one result, following the footsteps of MGM's movies and went bankrupt directly.

Speaking of this, Wan Xiaohu really needs to thank Cameron for his perfectionism. If he hadn't dragged the 20th Century Fox, Marvel Comics would have been unable to take back the copyright of the X-Men.

"Hello, Director Cameron." Wan Xiaohu is now used to being in a high position and is still very calm when facing his childhood idol.

Cameron is fifty-three years old this year. I don’t know if his hair is whiter or has turned white, and he looks a little old. With his height of 1.88 meters, he looks very impactful.

"Director Wan Xiaohu, hello, I heard that you came to my "Avatar" crew and did not intend to visit my job. Why? You are also one of the investors, and you should see my work results." Cameron did not have any politeness.

Wan Xiaohu said: "I believe you can bring us a very excellent "Avatar". I am afraid of disturbing your work."

"There is nothing to bother or not. Those producers are annoying me like flies every day. I'm used to it. Let's go, I'll take you to the set to visit. I've only recently developed a 3D camera. The 3D effect is great!" James Cameron's tone was a bit unquestionable.

This made Wan Xiaohu feel uncomfortable, but thinking that this guy has always had such a temper, he was relieved to work for him.

A capable person will always have a temper.

"Do you know the 3D camera I designed? This is a magical technology that makes the movie full of magic. It is completely different from the shoddy 3D I used to be. I think you will be surprised. Its picture is shocking!" In the car, Cameron couldn't help but show off.

Wan Xiaohu looked speechless. Is 3D amazing?

The old man has even seen imax-3d, and as for the gods 4d, 5d, 7d, 9d, we have tried it. The old man has returned from being reborn in 2014 and led you, the Niu Bi characters who have led you to the new glory of the movie.

Even though he despised Cameron many times in his heart, Wan Xiaohu was still shocked when he arrived at the studio.

This studio is too luxurious. It is a huge rocker hanging down on the top of more than ten meters high, and various shooting equipment is arranged in an orderly manner. Compared with this studio, the studio that Wan Xiaohu used to handle was not even a rusty bun.

"Is this the difference between the real blockbuster and the fake blockbuster I made?" Wan Xiaohu smashed his mouth and swallowed. This is the difference between a real big director and an ordinary director.

The next moment, Wan Xiaohu was ruthless in his heart. Sooner or later, he would also shoot real blockbusters and challenge the real big crew.

Sooner or later one day!

The actors of "Avatar" were filmed in front of the Blu-ray board. James Cameron mainly showed Wan Xiaohu his 3D virtual image photography system. This system was created by Cameron and his photographer Vince Pace, who started researching and invented new shooting equipment with the support of Sony.

Shooting through two Sony HDCF950-HD cameras, the lenses of these two cameras are similar to human eyes and can provide images with different perspectives. Because they are equipped with different filters, different parts of the image will be removed when the subject enters the lens. It is passed to the brain a parallax illusion and establishes the three-dimensional perspective obtained by the final senses.

In the past, some movies have also adopted 3D technology, but that is fake 3D. The false effect generated by fast frame progression will make people feel dizzy and unable to bear it after watching it for a few minutes.

"Do you know what giant eyes and fly eyes are? It's it! Through the adjustment of the gimbal, I can control the 3D photography effects at any time. Tiger, you should try it yourself. I have promoted it to many directors, I discussed it with Steven Spielberg, I told Christopher Nolan, they failed to discover its beauty, you can discover it!"

Cameron acted like a salesman, constantly urging Wan Xiaohu to try it out by himself.

Wan Xiaohu touched a 3D camera. Later generations are almost popular. It is a movie called a 3D version. However, standing in front of this carefully crafted 3D virtual image photography system, you can still feel that the 3D camera produced in assembly line is simply incomparable to this handmade equipment.

On both monitors, there are pictures of broken spectra, but they are combined together to overlap complete images. With a slight modification, you can achieve a perfect 3D effect.

"Very good." Wan Xiaohu was sincerely impressed.

"Haha, of course, good. Look at this again. This is also designed by me. Working together cameras and see how I built a virtual studio!" Cameron continued to promote it.

The so-called virtual studio is a studio that only appears on the computer screen. The actor performs in front of the empty background board, but the computer screen is filled with various virtual things, such as forests and mountains. Through this virtual scene, the director can directly observe whether the actor's performance matches the future CG picture.

The core of the virtual studio is the collaborative working camera. This is not a camera, but a combination system. It consists of 140 digital cameras spread over the top of the studio and builds a performance capture technology platform.

Motion capture technology uses cameras to capture the light of the human body, and working together with the cameras is to capture the studio's motion.

By tracking the reflection of the near-infrared spectrum emitted by the LED lights on the spot, the camera transmits the captured data to a system, and then combines the reflection of the spectrum with the movement of the actors to obtain a three-dimensional model of the entire lens.

These technologies are not new in later generations, but at this moment, Wan Xiaohu looks absolutely epoch-making and full of imagination.

If we talk about the transition from silent movies to audio movies, it is the first film technological revolution. From black and white movies to color movies, it is the second film technological revolution. From real scene movies to cg special effects scenes, it is the third film technological revolution.

Then everything that happened in this studio is the fourth film technological revolution.

The sublimation of two-dimensional images to three-dimensional images also breaks the difficulty of shooting and framing, allowing all incredible shots to be perfectly presented on the screen.

"And this, tiger, I heard that if you want to film "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", you need a lot of gorillas. Then, you deserve to have a facial capture headset and facial performance capture and restoration system! Oh, you have talked to Vita Digital people, so I won't introduce it much. Do you think these 3D photography techniques are very wonderful?"

“Yes, it’s wonderful!”

"Will you fall in love with it, tiger, nowadays, many people, especially directors, cannot see the future of this technology, which is a great resistance to our 3D technology promotion. After all, if you want to experience the perfect technical effect, you need to promote and build 3D cinemas around the world. I know you have a great influence in China, and we should unite to promote and occupy the 3D market around the world!"

Wan Xiaohu opened his mouth and finally knew why James Cameron brought him here so enthusiastically, and hoped that he would promote 3D technology with him.

Any film technology needs to be brought to the whole world through directors! (To be continued...)
