Chapter 21 Restart

Darkness, boundless, vast and boundless, like a black sea. He opened his eyes hard, but he felt that the undercurrents kept rolling around his body. The boundless gravity came from directly below, pulling his ankles hard, as if he wanted to pull him into the endless abyss.

The white light flashed by from time to time, taking away fleeting pictures, like slides that flipped the page at twice the speed. Those were fragments of memory, which had been covered with dust for a long time, and even the master himself thought he had been completely forgotten, were awakened for some reason after a long time.

The broken images surged over like a tide. He saw a handsome, tall man wearing a straight military uniform and righteous face, swearing to do his best to serve the motherland in the coming war; then he saw the boy falling from a train passing by at high speed in the mountains, and his best friend shouted his name loudly on the roof of the car, but his voice was quickly swallowed up by the bitter wind in the mountains.

What followed was blurred, but it was certain that he was still alive. In the intermittent fragments of memory, he was discovered and dragged in the snow for miles. He was taken to somewhere, strengthened and transformed. They cleared his brain, as if formatting a hard drive. Then they instilled him with a brand new belief, a brand new content, and told him who he should be loyal to.

Hydra.

In the past century, he was frozen as the strongest weapon, and the low temperature freezes his cells, preventing him from aging, and only when there is a task needed. He is like a sharp scalpel, and everything that blocks the development and interests of Hydra is his goal to be removed. Over the past century, he has eliminated countless obstacles and erased countless key goals for Hydra, and he has never failed.

Until today.

The stinging sensation extended into the nerve center of the brain along the nerve fibers, stimulating his brain violently like an electric current. The memories that were lost suddenly woke up under the violent stimulation, and a large amount of information flowed back to his mind.

The human brain is like a hard disk. The data it stores can be deleted and formatted, but it is not so easy to be completely cleared. Hydra did not completely erase his personality and memories. They just stuffed these things into the depths of his subconscious and sealed them. Now, this part of the memory is being guided by some external force.

He remembered it.

His name is Bucky Barnes.

He is a member of the Roaring Commando, Captain America's best friend.

After the flashback ended, Bucky opened his eyes and his body bounced instinctively.

He began to look at the surrounding environment alertly. The white floor tiles and clean walls were surrounded by various high-precision instruments and equipment, which were automatically operated without anyone operating. The other half of the room was covered with plush white blankets, with a gloomy bookshelves, and was surrounded by a bunch of mysterious ancient devices, which looked a bit like the collection of antique lovers.

Half a minute later, a young man entered the room. He looked about twenty years old, wearing a T-shirt casually, his hair was neatly maintained, and his hands were naturally inserted into his pockets, with a calm expression.

"Are you sleeping well, Sergeant Barnes?" Michael asked.

Bucky frowned: "Do you know my name?"

"Of course I know. In fact, you just recalled your name with my help."

Bucky suddenly remembered something: "My brainwashing."

"Relieve." Michael walked to the coffee machine on the left table, and found a mug from somewhere to pick up a cup of coffee. "To be honest, it was not as difficult as I expected. After so many years, Hydra's brainwashing methods are still so... directly and roughly. Bury your memories and thoughts and violently instill some new content out, and repeat the process regularly to ensure that the effect will not be reduced due to the passage of time..."

He paused, unconcealed his disdainful attitude: "No technical content, and easy to crack."

He shook his mug at the super killer in the room: "Do you want coffee?"

Bucky shook his head.

"Why do you do this?" he asked in confusion. "You hope I will work for you?"

"You can't say that you don't have such thoughts at all. But if this is really my motivation, I don't need to go through a lot of trouble to undo your brainwashing and awaken your personality. You have been hit by my hypnosis curse at that time, and I have no less than a hundred ways to instill new ideas into you and turn you into my puppet." Michael said lightly, "But I didn't do that, because it's what you deserve, Sergeant Barnes."

He held a mug in one hand and dragged a chair over to Bucky.

"I think you may still remember how many people you killed for Hydra in the past century," he said. "I was stuffed into a completely different personality, and I had no choice but to work for my former enemies, attacking the country where I once swear allegiance... I can't pretend to understand how you feel, because I've never had a similar experience to you, to be honest."

Sergeant Barnes pursed his lips without responding.

"I know you hate them," Michael continued, "and you probably already know that I'm with Hydra...a little bit of a festival. We're already starting a war now, and I'm cutting off their heads one by one."

He leaned forward slightly.

"Alexander Pierce is dead, but Hydra has other leaders," he said. "I will clear them all and uproot them. You should have seen what I can do, and you know I can do it. Before that, I am giving you an opportunity, a job, and an opportunity to join me and revenge them. The question now is, are you here?"

Bucky Barnes looked at him for a moment.

“If I said ‘no’,” he said, “what would you do?”

Michael leaned back into the back of the seat.

"Then I can only express regret." He shrugged, "But I will let you out and continue the project by myself. But of course, I have to erase your memory and make sure you don't remember the conversation at all. But other than that, you are completely free. You can change into a brand new identity and start a completely different life, no longer have to fight and kill, no need to follow the mercy of others-if that's what you want."

Sergeant Barnes narrowed his eyes and looked at him carefully, as if he wanted to judge through the young man's eyes that what he said was a bit true.

As Hydra spared no effort to cultivate the most powerful killer, the Winter Warrior naturally received special training on identifying lies. He can accurately capture various micro-expressions on a person's face, and can judge whether the other party is lying based on tone, eyes and limbs.

And all the details he captured were fed back to the same message - what this young man said was 100% true.

"You have to know, I'm not Hydra, and I'm not used to forcing others to do anything," Michael said. "So Sergeant Barnes, what do you think?"

Bucky closed his eyes lightly. When he opened his eyes again, he had abandoned confusion and regained the direction of his progress.
