21. Wake up(2/2)

"No?"

Merlin pulled a dull smile on his face, and he said:

"The war has begun, Eric, you just don't know that the pair of black hands will not be stopped so easily. He has planned everything. All he has to do is to advance the plan and wait for this country that is always surrounded by public opinion to step into the quagmire. Just like the Vietnam War, he has found the country's most fatal weakness."

He clenched his fists, and under the influence of the surging emotions in his heart, a crackling sound came from his fingers.

Merlin said in a gritting voice:

"They were deceived, those people, that organization, would not be so calm. This time it was just a preview, and the next time it was a real war. Soon, the real attack will come."

"It's not your business, Merlin."

Eric saw Merlin's breathing heaved and hurriedly comforted:

"We all know that you saved more than 100 people in Afghanistan, and you are a real hero. But the matter between two countries cannot be solved by one person. Don't put too much pressure on yourself."

"You have tried your best and almost lost your life, it's not your fault."

"For my job, it's not enough to do my best."

Merlin leaned against the bed and whispered:

"I had the opportunity to stop all this, and the soldiers should have continued their mission well. If I had not chosen to wait and see when I first entered that canyon, but took action immediately, all this would not have happened, and the soldiers would not have died."

"I chose the wrong one."

Merlin closed his eyes and said:

"And the price is those lost lives."

"You are taking other people's mistakes to yourself."

Eric shoved his eyes and said to Merlin:

"You can only do your best to delay the pace of war, Merlin! You are not a god, you cannot stop millions of people from hating each other, you cannot put all this on you, that's not the responsibility you should bear."

Faced with Eric's persuasion, Merlin did not answer immediately.

After more than ten seconds of silence, Merlin sighed, and he said softly as if he was reciting a poem:

“Everyone has their own role, some are responsible for having a good family, while others are responsible for protecting them.”

"This is my duty, my task. I have the ability to do that, but I don't do that. After things happen, I can't persuade myself to watch coldly. I make a decision and then take responsibility. This is how the world of adults works."

"This is not a question of whether it can be done. Eric, you try to tell me that all this is bound to happen. When something happens, I can tell myself that it is not my fault. Unfortunately, kid, I can't do it."

Merlin opened his eyes and looked at the metal ceiling, he said:

"I should have killed those members of the Ten Rings instead of leaving them to the soldiers to deal with it. I was too stupid to see Mandarin's sinister intentions, and I missed the best opportunity."

"I was obsessed with completing the task, but I failed my responsibilities."

"so what?"

Eric stood up angrily, he looked at Merlin and said:

"You decided to stay here with such a self-pity and tell me you are a loser? No! You are not a loser, Merlin, 99% of the people in this world can't do the feat you have achieved. Stop blaming yourself!"

"What does it have to do with me?"

Merlin looked directly at the empty ground ahead, and said:

"I just want to say, I made a stupid mistake and I have learned my lesson. If there is another time, then I won't hesitate anymore."

When Eric saw Merlin's decisive expression, he didn't know what to say.

"Go and help me call the base chief!"

Merlin waved to Eric, who was standing there in a daze, and he picked up his fruit porridge again, and said without raising his head:

"It's time for us to leave here."

"Are you in such a hurry to leave?"

Eric asked as he walked towards the door:

"Is it uncomfortable for you to stay here? Do you want to change a room? I saw a lot of available rooms here."

"No."

Merlin raised her head and smiled at Eric, and he said:

“Everything is good here, but it’s not home.”

"I'm just"

"I want to go home."
