Chapter 45: The Night

Where are we going?

On the night of January 1, 1915, many people had such questions in their minds.

In fact, these people all have a common destination, Berlin.

Konitz Station, Germany.

This is the first station that the Matthew Corps needs to pass after leaving East Prussia. The station is not large in size. Since the eastern line has been quiet for a long time, there is only a garrison force of about 50 people stationed here.

Although it was the coldest season of the year, the soldiers guarding the station were still standing guard and patrolling conscientiously, but everyone was packing them tightly. After nightfall, there were much fewer trains passing through this station than during the day. Most of the trains going east through this place were trains loading aid supplies, as well as civil and military goods commuting between East Prussia and other areas of Germany. The railway line here is far from as busy as the beginning of the war.

When it was nearly 9 o'clock, an armored train appeared in the sight of the sentries. There had been no abnormal situation in the past two or three months. In addition, the train was not fast and the identification signal from the German army troops was sent. The sentries only reported the situation to the station commander and sent a signal to the other party to request a parking inspection.

Under the gaze of the sentry on duty, the armored train stopped on the east side of the station as scheduled. German military trains, national flags, and army soldiers. Faced with all this, the sentry's bullets were not loaded, but waited for their commanders to determine their identity to the other party. At this time, no one found that at the rear of the train, a group of black shadows quietly slipped off the train and touched the station's platform and sentry.

The officer on duty at the station brought two soldiers to the locomotive. The officer looked a little thin, with thick eyebrows and big eyes, and his collar and epaulette showed that his rank was a second lieutenant. Next to the armored carriage at the back of the locomotive, two officers and four soldiers had already got off the car before waiting. Leading was a young officer wearing a gray military coat, who looked less than 30 years old, but his face and eyes looked very mature and sophisticated, with a hooked nose and broad shoulders.

"Hello, your military rank and number?" The lieutenant on duty at the station asked cautiously and politely, and the person in front of him knew at a glance that he was definitely not a small character.

"Wolfgang von Wagner, Lieutenant Colonel of the Army, is affiliated with the Special Operations Force directly under the Army Department! This is my certificate!" When the officer who got off the train reached out and handed out the certificate, he also revealed the collar seal on his military uniform. It is indeed something that most people envied when they become Lieutenant Colonel of the Army at such a young age.

The second lieutenant said as he opened the document and carefully checked it with the light next to him, and it seemed that there was no problem.

"Where are you going? We did not receive a notice from our superior that there is such a train passing through our station!"

"Lieutenant, our destination is here!" said the lieutenant colonel, instead, lowering his voice, "We are here for secret missions, to be precise, to capture a spy lurking here! If you don't want to be a traitor who shelters spies, you'd better not do anything now, let's deal with it all!"

The lieutenant looked at the young lieutenant colonel in front of him in surprise. His serious eyes didn't seem to be joking at all, and his sharp eyes seemed to be peeking at everything inside him, which made him shudder in his heart.

"Spy? God! Mr. Lieutenant Colonel, are you sure about this? I think I'd better report to my superiors!" The lieutenant was about to turn around, but he heard the lieutenant colonel adding ice:

"You'd better not do anything now, otherwise we will treat you as a spy! After the matter is over, we will naturally report all this to your superiors!"

The second lieutenant stared at the lieutenant colonel's eyes for a few seconds. He tried to fight against that look, but he soon lost. When the lieutenant colonel nodded slightly, he felt relieved.

"Let your soldiers all gather on the platform, immediately!" The voice of the lieutenant colonel's words was still so cold.

After two seconds of stunned lie, the lieutenant quickly walked to a booth next to the platform, then picked up the phone and said something.

The man named Wagner still looked ahead with his head held high, while the soldiers behind him were silently watching the lieutenant's every move. At this time, the shadows that had penetrated from the rear of the car had actually controlled the entire station, and they intended to avoid all casualties unless the other party was a group of people who were ignorant of their appearance.

After the lieutenant made the phone call, he walked straight in front of the Lieutenant Colonel. About one and a half minutes later, all the soldiers guarding the station lined up on the platform.

"Lieutenant Colonel, all 56 soldiers from the Konitz Station Garage are here!"

"Are all here?" Lieutenant Colonel determined.

The lieutenant nodded with certainty, "Yes, all!"

The lieutenant colonel waved his right hand and rushed out of the rear carriages. They quickly surrounded the soldiers on the platform.

Seeing the guns of his own people, the soldiers guarding the station were obviously very surprised.

"Second Lieutenant, thank you for your cooperation!" A strange smile suddenly appeared on the corner of Wagner's mouth. This expression made the poor lieutenant feel vaguely wrong, but it was too late now.

About 5 minutes later, Wagner and most of the soldiers boarded the armored train again, while others took over the sentries. At this time, about 6 or 7 kilometers east of Captain Konitz, the remaining thirty trains in the Matthew Corps were moving eastward in an orderly manner.

"General, the vanguard sent a signal that they had occupied Konitz Station."

After hearing the staff's report, Matthew's face did not have the joy of victory, or it was not a pleasant action.

"Notify all cars to continue moving forward, no one is allowed to get off the car without authorization, and keep the lights under control throughout the journey!"

After giving the order, Matthew turned his gaze back to the map on the table in front of him. They were halfway from Berlin. Konitz Station was just one of more than ten large and small stations next, among which the larger ones were Studding and Schweter, and then they could reach Berlin. It would be as simple as passing through these two large stations, as if they were not controlling Konitz Station. These are exactly what Chen Tian was worried about. If the Army Department had supported it, there would be no need to be so troublesome. This is why Chen Tian felt so disappointed when he knew that Falkenhein did not support him.

When the train passed through Konitz Station, the officer on duty who had been locked up and his companions couldn't help but exclaim: "Oh my God! Where did these trains come from? Where are they going?"

People will know the answers to these questions after dawn.

Matthew's Corps was not the only one who planned to go to Berlin by rail. After receiving an emergency transfer from the Army Department, the troops stationed in Frankfurt gathered at the Frankfurt Station under the leadership of commander General Borg. However, it was obvious that their preparations were not sufficient, and even General Borg did not know what operations his troops would participate in at this time.

Frankfurt West Suburb Railway Station, an originally quiet place, began to become lively at some point. The black night was almost dispersed by the high-power lighting lamps around. Teams of soldiers carrying marching bags, armed belts, slender Mauser rifles, and pointed helmets were gathering towards the platform. Some trains had already stopped on the platform, and some were still slowly entering the station. Looking around, the scene here was a little chaotic, and the officers were trying their best to maintain order on the site.

Corporal Vick was a reserve soldier who was recruited after the outbreak of the war. He was still nervous about his intention to receive the baptism of war. Unexpectedly, his troops were stationed in Frankfurt. Their troops were tasked with monitoring the eastern front and responding to emergencies. When the Russians attacked East Prussia, they were on guard for several days. With the defeat of the Russians, they became nothing again. When the French war was at its most intense, they gathered at this station to be ready to reinforce the front line at any time, but the French were defeated soon. After that, except for the rotation of troops, the German army did not send another soldier abroad. Corporal Vick became a German soldier who had no chance to meet the enemy. However, Vick was not depressed by this. After all, his companions around him were the same as him. War was a very distant thing for them.

From hearing the orders of assembly to setting up from the barracks and walking to the train station, it took less than two hours for Vick and his companions. Although they had not been through the battle formation, the infantry still seemed quite well-trained. After the emergency assembly and march, they were still neat and full of morale. Each carried a square backpack, as well as rifle bayonets, Maxim machine guns and grenades in the Army's standard equipment. However, according to the orders of the Army, they did not carry artillery with them.

It was almost midnight when Vick and his companions boarded a train. This was supposed to be a good time to sleep, but the soldiers were not sleepy at all, and most of them had expectations on their faces, including Vick.

“我们要去打仗了吗?”

"Have you found the murderer who assassinated His Majesty the Emperor? We want to punish the enemy now?"

"Is it British? Or French? Or Serb?"

“这是我们的复仇之战吗?”

The soldiers whispered, and this was limited to conversations between soldiers. No one would question the superiors. You should know that German soldiers have never given any discounts to execute orders.

As the soldiers boarded one after another, the first train full of soldiers began to start, and other trains also left the platform one after another. At this time, it was nearly 4 hours before the Matthew's Corps left Cornisburg.
