Chapter 3 Moonlight Demon

"Grand Duke Friedrich, you may come to me at an extremely wrong time!" Ivanov smiled coldly. He had never recognized the ability of the Austro-Hungarian coalition commander-in-chief. He did not have it in Galicia, nor in Rhodes-Warsaw, and even more so here. Ivanov believed that at night, his cavalry could exert one hundred and twenty percent of the combat power.

Just a week ago, the Russian general was still worried about his future. General Jilinsky, the commander-in-chief of the Northwest Army Group, was dismissed and imprisoned by the Tsar for losing two entire armies in the Battle of East Prussia. Therefore, after the defeat of Rhodz-Warsaw, Ivanov was terrified every day to wait for the Tsar's punishment. However, before the Tsar's punishment was arrived, the Russian Revolution broke out. The Tsar was forced to evacuate St. Petersburg, so he naturally had no time to deal with the defeated general. Agrenni took the opportunity to offer him superior conditions, not only to ensure that he would not throw away his black hat, but also to make a chance to make a fortune, provided that everything obeys his command.

Agreni's first plan was to refuse to return to the capital to rescue the Tsar. Although the Tsar did not fall into the hands of the revolutionary party, his first plan had been basically achieved. Now, the second plan will be implemented specifically by General Ivanov.

Just as the Revolutionary Party began to attack St. Petersburg and the Austro-Hungarian coalition crossed the border, Ivanov's army had already taken action. His 8th Army, the army that had retreated and preserved in Rhodes, was handed over to Agreni, and they were ambushing another Austrian army in southern Belarus with one of the Guards; Ivanov himself led the 3rd and 4th Army, the two armies that were crippled in the Battle of Rhodes-Warsaw.

Some cavalrymen of the Guards arrived here on the night of the 1st. In three days, they built fortifications similar to those of the German army according to Agreni's plan. At the same time, they arranged two armies of 100,000 infantry in the front position. The remaining 100,000 infantry were hidden in the villages and woods behind the position. The guard cavalry troops of one army were ambushed in the town on the right wing of the position and in the forest next to it. The remaining 50,000 cavalry were scattered near the roads passed by the Austrian army.

Austrian commander Friedrich, Grand Duke of Austria, had not realized his situation yet. Perhaps he and his troops should not come to this place at all. What made Grand Duke extremely depressed was that the German troops stationed in Poland had no intention of entering Russia. He was originally worried that the German army would occupy Russian territory in front of him, so he hurriedly led his troops across the border. Although his army had not been resisted in the past few days, he felt increasingly that the progress here seemed to be too smooth.

It was not just the Austrian commander who thought something was strange. Chen Tian and his generals were studying the battle situation in Belarus in the command center in Warsaw.

"The Austro-Hungarian army has occupied nearly half of the land in Belarus in less than 4 days, and the Russian army has not resisted at all. Have they been transferred to suppress the revolutionary party?" Someone suddenly asked, and everyone shook their heads.

"Impossible, the revolutionary uprising broke out in cities in Belarusia, such as Minsk, Gomel, Grodno, and other Belarusian cities were suppressed by Agreni's troops on the same day, and the Russian revolutionary troops in Moscow and St. Petersburg were not attacked by Russian troops from Belarus!" Hoffman made an inference based on the intelligence provided by German spies and the Russian Revolutionary Party, "Agreni and Ivanov's troops did not leave Belarus at all!"

General Voirsch, commander of the German Reserve Army, said with a sarcastic sarcasm: "Will the people be disbanded? Agreni's team has all escaped?"

"General, this is unlikely! Those are the Russian Royal Guards, Russia's most elite troops! And Ivanov, although his troops suffered heavy losses, they will not completely collapse!" Markenson looked serious. In the future, after the main force of the East Prussian Legion left Poland, he and General Voirsh would shoulder the heavy responsibility of Germany's defense in Poland.

"But with Ivanov's character, he would never sit idly by and watch the Austro-Hungarian army go straight in! He is the kind of person who drives soldiers to rush forward regardless of everything, and he always likes to keep only one division's reserve team!" Voirsch had dealt with the Russian general in Galicia and seemed to know him well.

Chen Tian looked up at the commander of the reserve army in front of him. Perhaps it should be more appropriate to be renamed the commander of the Second German Polish garrison army. During the meeting with Grand Duke Friedrich that day, the general helped him a little, and also left a good impression on everyone, so he quickly integrated into the team, although this integration was not formal.

"It's very good to say, General Voirshi! The Russian army's behavior now does not conform to the usual style of the Russian army, but if the command of the Russian army is now completely in the hands of Agreni, everything will be obvious!"

"A trap!" Hoffman and Markkenson said this sentence almost in unison.

"Yes, a trap!" Chen Tian nodded reluctantly. Although the Austrian army was a little greedy, they were allies of the German Empire after all.

"But what are the Russians doing?" Orge and Voirsh were full of questions at this time.

"Of course, it was an action against the Austrian army entering the Russian territory, and it was a fatal plan, just like what they did to us at Kimon!" Chen Tian felt that things might get worse and worse, "I'm afraid Grand Duke Friedrich will be in trouble!"

Just when the commanders of the German and Austrian armies were worried about their premonition, Cheney and his cavalry regiment were in real trouble. They began to march towards the town on the right wing of the Russian army when the Austrian infantry attacked the Russian position, and soon approached it carefully. The Russian army on the position obviously discovered the Austro-Hungarian cavalry, and soon afterwards concentrated artillery fire to bombard the Cheney cavalry regiment and other Austrian cavalry outside the town, which was even more dense than the previous shelling of the Austrian infantry. Major Cheney then led his cavalry to the side away from the Russian position and approached the unknown small town from the edge of the forest.

Although it was difficult for Russian artillery to cover this direction, Cheney and his cavalry encountered trouble when approaching the town. The Russian army not only extended the trenches to the front of the town, but also deployed heavy machine guns on the tops of several buildings on the outermost side, making it difficult for the Austrian cavalry to enter the town before clearing these obstacles. In the end, Cheney made a decision that he regretted: to circle the forest to the rear of the town.

After reporting this to the command center, Cheney led more than 2,000 cavalrymen into the large forest that seemed somewhat mysterious under the moonlight. At first, the trees were sparse, and the soft silver-white moonlight shone on the land in the forest, guiding the way forward for these uninvited guests. The forest was not quiet, and the owls rustled on the branches, and the small animals made rustling sounds in the bushes from time to time, which made the Austrian cavalry a little nervous. When the sound of cannons in the distance sounded densely, these sounds were almost suppressed.

"It seems that the artillery has become serious this time. I hope they can fill the big ditches dug by the Russians. The poor infantry was blocked by the ditches! If we were to jump past them!" Cheney thought so, but no one in his team said, and even the sound of horse hooves stepping on the leaves and soil sounded so faint and dull.

No one wants to wake up the things hidden in the forest, no matter what form they belong to.

Gradually, the trees became denser and denser, and the shadows left by the unfinished leaves and interlaced branches on the ground became increasingly dense. The sight in the forest had become very bad. The cavalry must move forward carefully to avoid any accidents. However, it happened if it was not an accident.

When war horse roars and horse hooves came from the front, the Austrian cavalry thought it was just an echo in the woods, but the volume of the echo gradually exceeded the original sound and sounded closer and closer. In the horrified eyes of the Austrians, a large group of black shadows appeared in the darkness not far away.

"God! What is that?" the Austrians shouted in horror. Under the colorful light passing through the branches and leaves, the figures of the black shadows were vaguely visible. They appeared in front of people like monsters from another world. They absorbed the already very faint light like black holes. Even when the distance was very close, the Austrians could only see a shadow. They could only judge based on their outlines that it was a cavalry composed of one man and one horse. The long swords flashed in their hands with a terrifying cold light.

This may be the effect of dark green military uniforms and black or brown war horses in the dark night and the forest! Cheney's cavalry had almost one thought in an instant: turn around and run away!

Cheney had no time to think too much, nor did he intend to stop these monsters alone. Like most cavalrymen, he rode his horse out of the forest. The mottled moonlight made him a little dizzy. He could only lean on his mount to avoid the big tree in front of him. From time to time, the screams of Austrians came from behind. The shrill sound almost filled the entire forest, and at the same time it also penetrated deeply into the heart of every Austrian cavalry.

The trees beside him were retreating rapidly, and the sound behind seemed to be in his ears. Cheney felt that he had never been so nervous. His back was almost soaked in cold sweat. The whizzing cool breeze gave him a feeling of a black shadow behind him. He did not dare to look back, for fear that he would see those terrifying demon shadows when he turned around. Most of the Austrian cavalry were in the same mood as Major Cheney. No matter whether they were ghosts or gods or not, this situation was too terrifying. Everyone just wanted to escape from this hellish forest as soon as possible.

When Cheney was about to be frightened by his rapid breathing, the edge of the forest finally appeared in front of him, and the earth was covered with a faint silver gray under the moonlight. The flat grass was so beautiful for the Austrians at this time.

When they saw the cavalry unit that had entered the forest before fled out of the forest in panic and ran towards them without looking back, the Austro-Hungarian cavalry outside the forest were very surprised. The scattered formation of the Cheney cavalry regiment, the terrifying shouts, and the large group of black shadows that appeared on the edge of the forest all brought a considerable impact to their nerves.

After rushing out of the forest, Cheney finally breathed a sigh of relief. His cavalry troops ahead gave him a shot of cardiotropic agent. Seeing the cavalry there preparing for battle, he finally remembered his duties and began to shout loudly to the soldiers to join the team next to them. Despite the extraordinary stimulation, the Austrian cavalry began to gather according to Cheney's orders, but they soon found that the expressions of everyone around him were far from calm, especially when they saw the shadows coming out of the forest and marching on the flat ground, they felt even more afraid.

Cheney slightly counted the number of people. There were only less than 2,600 people left in the forest at this time, and his morale and mental state were even more worrying. Under the hazy moonlight, Cheney realized that those who were not magic cavalry at all, because they had faces similar to him, but their dark green uniforms were something he had never seen before. If it were the slightly gray military uniforms of Cossacks, he might not have been so panicked. It was a damn color.

The cavalry on the opposite side were still coming from the forest to the flat ground in front, and the queues there looked very large. Cheney looked at the cavalry on his side, and the other Austro-Hungarian cavalry that was running from a distance to support, with about 1 and a half division of about 20,000 cavalry units, and the other side did not seem to be less than him.

However, now it is time to fight or retreat, and Cheney is not making a decision. A fierce Austro-Hungarian cavalry general slowly rode his horse to the front of the team. His words sounded a little blurry to Cheney, but there was a burst of shouts between the other Austro-Hungarian cavalrymen, and the next was the sound of the sword being sheathed. It seemed that the general wanted to take advantage of the opportunity that the opponent had not finished the entire team.

"Don't worry, those cavalry units composed of Belarusian peasants have nothing to be afraid of!" Cheney shouted to his soldiers. Although he had no idea of the origin of those cavalry, he was afraid that this was the only thing he could do. It seemed that his soldiers believed it, and they shouted like other cavalrymen.

The Austro-Hungarian cavalry was the first to move, and then the entire Austro-Hungarian cavalry team began to slowly advance. When they advanced about 500 meters, the cavalry in the center took the lead in trotting, and Cheney and his regiment also accelerated. Until this time, the cavalry on the opposite side began to move, and subsequent cavalry continued to appear in the forest, which made all Austro-Hungarian cavalry feel light or heavy worry.

"Ula..."

This shout not only echoed in the middle of the battlefield for a long time, but also deeply shocked the hearts of the Austro-Hungarian cavalry. These were definitely well-trained Russian cavalry units. This "Long Live" roar was so neat and consistent. It seemed that they were often inspected. In any case, they would definitely not be what Cheney called the "Belarusian peasant".

Cheney began to feel guilty. In Galicia, his troops were pursued by Russian cavalry for a whole day. In Rhodes-Warsaw, Cossack's strength also left a deep impression on him. The one in front of him didn't know what it was to be sacred. He actually didn't have time to think about it anymore. When the two cavalry formations collided, he could find the answer he wanted.

In terms of ferocity, the Russian guard cavalry is definitely not inferior to the Cossack cavalry. Many of them are elites selected from the Cossack troops; in terms of discipline and team combat, these guard cavalry are obviously much more than the barbaric Cossack civilization; in terms of equestrianism and fighting, the guard cavalry has more training and better equipment. Therefore, no matter from any perspective, the Austro-Hungarian cavalry encountered an absolutely powerful enemy.

The Austro-Hungarian cavalry in the battle were deeply touched by this. The other party made various flexible movements on the horse with excellent equestrian skills, and the skilled squad tactics made the Austro-Hungarian cavalry at a disadvantage in the local number. Cheney, who had won countless cavalry fighting medals, was entangled by a small Russian corporal. Fortunately, his two personal guards held the other two Russian cavalry who came with this guy, so Cheney was not beaten by the opponent.

Dang! Dang! Cheney was frightened by every collision of the sword. The opponent's wrist strength was good, and the sword danced even loudly. The moves seemed very simple, chopping, picking, chopping, stabbing, blocking, and grid. Compared to Cheney's gorgeous sword technique, it seemed very practical. Moreover, the Russians were very quick to move, and Cheney's attack was easily resolved by him. Although Cheney was not exhausted in a short period of time, the opponent's momentum kept oppressing him.

After Cheney thought that he was quick and sudden attack failed, a familiar scream came from his ears. One of his guards was stabbed into the vital points by his opponent, and he was shaken and dropped down. In less than half a minute, another guard of his guard also died under the opponent's attack.

One-on-three! A cold sweat slowly slid down Cheney's forehead. He jumped forward and jumped out of the Russian attack, turning around to face the three Russian cavalry. The other party was not very tall, but his eyes were unusually cold and cruel. The entire battle situation was undergoing subtle changes at this time. The Russian cavalry gradually devoured the Austro-Hungarian cavalry's queue, and more and more Russians joined the battle behind.

Not much like that, Cheney rushed forward, and he targeted the Russian cavalry on the far left, which was also the most favorable position for him to wave his sword with his right hand. After a metal hit, several sparks were lost in an instant. Cheney suddenly felt a sharp pain in his abdomen. He reached out and touched it, and a big hole was cut in his stomach. He looked back with some confusion. The Russian cavalry in the middle had sat on the back of the man on the far left. When Cheney fought with the Russian cavalry on the left, the guy behind suddenly stabbed him from below.

With an incredible look, Cheney was knocked down and his eyes could still see the bright moon in the sky.
