Chapter 465: Pilgrimage to Faroe Island

At Stockholm, Aranda International Airport, Zhang Ran met with Swedish TV director Marini Lu.

Bergman is escaping from the world and does not like to meet guests. She is one of the few people who have gained Bergman's trust. The documentary "Bergman Island" released in 4 years is her work.

The two left Aranda Airport, took a small double-propelled plane and flew southeastward across the sea, and arrived in Visby after 40 minutes. Then they took a bus north from Visby Airport, and arrived at the ferry terminal in the Faroe Strait after more than fifty kilometers.

Standing on the dock, Zhang Ran saw the island in the middle of the sea, which was the holy place in the hearts of many filmmakers, Faro Island. In my memory, Tang Wei's wedding was held on this island.

In 1960, in order to shoot the film "Walking Through the Dark Glass", Bergman and the photographer came to Faroe Island to see the scenery. At that time, this island was still a secret military base in Sweden, and tourists were not allowed to go to the island. He originally planned to go to the Orkney Island in Scotland to shoot, but in order to save money, the producer asked him to come to Faroe Island to see. Bergman came with the idea of "just go and see it, it's easy to explain when he comes back, or go to Orkney to film," but fell in love with it.

Later, he filmed four feature films and two documentaries on the island; he bought some old houses and converted them into residences, studios, and cinemas. He settled here in his later years and was buried on the island after his death.

After crossing the strait by ferry, Marinilu drove through the island. After many twists and turns, she finally stopped in front of a yard covered in shade.

The yard has a bit of a farmyard in the countryside. Outside the yard is a wall made of stone, with barbed wire on it. A sign stands in front of the yard with "Private Territory". As soon as Zhang Ran and the others approach the yard, the radio rang: "This is a private territory, please leave!"

Marinilu led Zhang Ran to the front of the yard and stopped, picked up her cell phone and made a phone call.

Three or four minutes later, an old man in a brown jacket walked out of the yard with a cane. When Marinilu saw it, she immediately smiled: "Mr. Bergman!"

Zhang Ran calmed down and saw that it was indeed Bergman, but he was much older than the photos he had seen. He was in his twilight years and even his body was a little hunched.

Bergman got closer and closer and soon walked up to the two of them. He looked at Zhang Ran and asked Marinilu, "Is he the director Scorsese mentioned?"

"Yes, Mr. Bergman!" Marinilu quickly introduced, "He is Zhang Ran, the director of "The Aviator"!"

Zhang Ran hurried forward and said hello: "Hello, Mr. Bergman! I am Zhang Ran, and it is very honored to see you!"

Bergman looked at Zhang Ran, turned around and walked into the room with crutches, and said as he walked: "Come in!"

Zhang Ran and Marinilu followed Bergman, walked into the yard, took off their shoes in the front hall, and walked into the room. The lobby of the house was large, but when a lot of furniture was placed in the room, it gave people a small feeling.

Bergman greeted Zhang Ran and the others to sit down, squinted their eyes, and said to themselves: "I don't like meeting guests, but I want to see you. Do you know why?"

Zhang Ran shook his head: "I don't know. To be honest, I never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to come to Faroe Island to see you. I know that many people want to see you, but they were rejected!"

Bergman looked at Zhang Ran and said, "I saw my own shadow in you!"

Zhang Ran felt inexplicably different from Bergman in both his film style and his work style, so he couldn't help but ask: "Why do you say that?"

Bergman did not answer and smiled and said, "I have had a very stupid dream. I appeared on the set but I don't know how to fiddle with the camera. The key is that I have been doing movies for many years, so why don't I know how to fiddle with the camera? I have had this dream many times. Have you ever had a similar dream?"

Zhang Ran's heart almost stopped beating, and after a while, a sentence popped out: "I did it!"

Bergman looked at Zhang Ran, his eyes as sharp as a sword, which could penetrate the hearts of the people: "So I saw my own shadow in you."

Zhang Ran said in a deep voice: "But I still don't understand."

Bergman's expression became serious: "Your heart is full of fear, but you are escaping from inner fear. In fact, it is not terrible to have fear in your heart. Only those who do not have fear are scary. Such people are free of worries and are prone to doing extreme and paranoid things. Only when you have fear can you restrain and be respectful."

Zhang Ran trembled slightly and looked at Bergman in horror. Yes, his heart was full of fear, but he buried the fear very deeply and never revealed it. Even Zhang Jingchu didn't know. He always thought he was hiding well, but Bergman had never met him at all, but saw through his heart. At this moment, his first reaction in his heart was that this old man was a monster! His eyes kept flashing, and his expression was a little panicked: "How do you know?"

Bergman smiled faintly and said, "It's the feeling that your movie conveys to me. Almost all your movies have one intention, that is dreams. In fact, there are many dreams in my movies. At first, I thought some of my movies were dreams, and some of them were dreams. After I was sixty, I suddenly realized that all my works were dreams, and they were projections of my inner fear and loneliness!"

Zhang Ran stared at Bergman for a second, and said in a trembling voice: "I don't know what your fear is?"

Bergman did not hide it: "My fear comes from childhood. There is no love in my childhood world. My father talks about God's love all day long in the church, but he doesn't talk about it at home. There is only resentment between his family. My mother is in a frightened state, and her parents' fights and quarrels have destroyed my faith in God and love. So, my life is absent. I can't feel love for anyone or anything, and I am the same for myself. I have lived with hatred for decades." Bergman looked at Zhang Ran and asked, "Then what are you, what are you afraid of?"

Zhang Ran breathed a sigh of relief. It was not what he thought. Bergman was not a reborn person! He hesitated for a few seconds and said slowly: "There was a philosopher in ancient China. One day, Zhuangzi dreamed that he turned into a butterfly and danced gracefully, not knowing that he was Zhuangzi. After a while, he woke up from his dream. He now was Zhuangzi lying on the bed. So Zhuangzi was very confused, not knowing whether it was Zhuangzi who dreamed of becoming a butterfly or the butterfly who dreamed of becoming Zhuangzi. The biggest fear in my heart is this, just like "The Matrix", I don't know if everything in front of me is real." He sighed slightly: "Maybe the real thing I was lying on the hospital bed and was on the verge of death. Everything in front of me was just a dream."

Zhang Ran is a reborn person, and his fear comes from the rebirth. Is the so-called rebirth real? Will everything now be just a dream? Just like the movie "Stay on Life and Death", everything is just an illusion you see before you die; or if you are lying in the hospital, everything is just your dream.

In fact, for a long time, he was not afraid, but felt excited. The memory of the next ten years could make it easy for him to succeed, which was simply a dream. But as he became more and more successful, he gradually became worried. He was afraid that all this was unreal, and that the so-called rebirth was just a dream.

This is true for people. The more they have, the more they are afraid of losing!

Bergman was a little surprised: "This is a big philosophical proposition that I can't answer. But for a long time I was afraid of death. As an image, death often appears in my movies, which is a projection of my inner fear. After my wife Ingrid's death, I began to believe that death is a reunion rather than a departure forever. Whenever I think of Ingrid waiting for me on the other side of the world, I become no longer afraid, but full of faith." Bergman stared at Zhang Ran: "Do your family love you? Do you love them?"

"Yes, my father and mother love me very much, and I love them too."

"Where are lovers? Do you love them?"

"I have a girlfriend, she is a very good girl, and I love her very much."

"Then you are happier than me. I've been angry and questioning all my life. I didn't realize until I was sixty. Actually, I've been looking for love in another way. I spent most of my life in the emotions of resentment of my father, but in the last few years of his life, I became a true good friend. Before my father died, I went to Sophia Hospital to see him. He grabbed my hand, read the gospels, and struggled to pray for God to bless me. In fact, my father's love for me has always been there, and it has been with me all the time since my life was born. I understand it too late. Zhang, this is an old man's advice to you. God cannot save us, but love can allow us to obtain redemption. You must love your loved ones and those who love you."

Zhang Ran bowed and greeted: "Thank you, Mr. Bergman." He understood what Bergman meant. You have so many people who love you, and you love them too. No matter whether you are Zhuangzi or a butterfly now, for these people you love and those who love you, you must live happily. What do you care about other things!

Bergman looked at Zhang Ran and said, "You are a very talented director. You must understand that a truly good director must have the courage to face yourself honestly, dig out the biggest shortcomings, ** and fears in your heart, and be naked in front of the audience. You don't feel like filming now, but you are actually closing your heart."

Zhang Ran was a little amused and cried. He explained Nora Jones a few days ago, but he didn't expect that he had this problem. It was really the case that the authorities were confused and bystanders!

Bergman talked with Zhang Ran for nearly an hour, first talking about Zhang Ran, himself, and later talking about the movie.

Bergman said: "I think the better directors among the living are Spielberg, Scorses and Coppola. They are all the kind of directors who speak a lot and are full of passion. They all have a realistic attitude, and the films they have been making progress. Your "Aviator" has this characteristic, and I like it very much. Your movies all have the temperament of Kurosawa, but the closest one is you. Soderberg's "Drug Network" is also very good. The other two American movies I think are good are "American Beauty" and "Magnolia Flower".

Marinilu looked at Bergman in surprise, unable to believe her ears, and even put Zhang Ran and Coppola together and said, "This evaluation is too high, right?"

Zhang Ran was also excited: "Mr. Bergman, I recently made a short film. I just finished editing and the dubbing has not been completed. I don't know if you are interested in seeing it, it's only a few minutes!"

Bergman smiled and nodded: "Yes!" He stood up: "Follow me!"

Bergman's cinema on Faroe Island was originally a warehouse for storing grain, but later he transformed it into a cinema. Bergman collected 45oo videos and he would come to this warehouse to watch movies at 3 pm every day, and most of the people he watched were Swedish movies, especially silent movies.

The theater is very small, with only 15 sand chairs. A gray wool cushion is placed on one of the seats in the first row, which is Bergman's fixed seat. The theater is simple, and the only decoration is a giant tapestry called "The Magic Flute on Faro Island".

The lights go out and the movie will start playing soon. (To be continued.)8
