#1132 on the bestseller list

On November 3, 1997, Zhang Chunru received two printed sample books "Nanjing Massacre". When she opened the brown packaging box, she was so excited that she trembled all over. She was like a little girl, holding two sample books and dancing in the room, "lala" with her two sample books.

Zhang Chunru told her mother Zhang Yingying about the good news, and also told her that she would hold a month-long book signing event between November 14 and December 19. According to the contract signed with News Weekly, she could not disclose any content in the book before the book excerpt was published. However, once the book excerpt was published, she could speak freely about the content in the book.

On November 6, Tom Maslin, editor of Newsweek, sent the manuscript of the book to Chunru, soliciting her suggestions for excerpts, and requested Zhang Chunru to agree to publish some photos in the magazine. The next morning, Tom Maslin sent the arranged layout and notes, titles and texts to Zhang Chunru by email. The title of the article was "Expose the Nanjing Massacre", and the subtitle was "Book Excerpt: - An uncompromising reflection and review of the most horrifying chapter in World War II history by a Chinese-American writer."

Zhang Chunru asked Tom Maslin: "Are you sure the book excerpt will be published in Newsweek on the 17th, and it will not be revoked, right?"

Tom Maslin said with great certainty: "The layout plan has been determined. Unless a major change occurs, the magazine will be sold on November 10th, and you will be able to see your book picks."

To celebrate the coming release of the book pick, Zhang Chunru and her husband Douglas went to the concert in the evening. However, when they returned home at 10 o'clock in the evening, they received a call from Tom Masling: "Chunru, I am Tom Masling of Newsweek. I'm sorry to inform you that we have to remove the book pick, because according to the notice above, the page number of the magazine has been reduced by 4 pages. We will contact you next week. If you want to discuss this with me further, please call me."

Zhang Chunru immediately called Tom Maslin and asked, "What the hell is going on?"

Tom Maslin told Zhang Chunru: "Four big advertisements were removed on Friday night. News Weekly must ensure that the advertisement page and the editorial content page are maintained at a certain proportion. Sometimes, because of the advertisement page being removed, some reports must also be removed."

Zhang Chunru felt something strange and asked, "Why should I withdraw my manuscript instead of someone else's?"

Tom Maslin said: "It's not common, but we can't do it either. We're working - at night, redesigning the magazine layout, but we can do very little."

Zhang Chunru felt that Tom Maslin was hesitating and called the rest of the editorial department of Newsweek. An editor secretly told Zhang Chunru: "One of the removed big advertisements is Toyota's advertisement." But not long after, the editor called Zhang Chunru again and said: "I made a mistake. The postponement of the book excerpt has nothing to do with the revocation of the advertisement!"

Although the other party denied that it was because of the threat of Japanese companies to withdraw advertisements that the book excerpts could not be published normally, both Zhang Chunru and the audience in front of the screen believed that this was the case. After Japanese companies knew that Zhang Chunru's article would be published in News Weekly, they threatened to withdraw Zhang Chunru's book excerpts.

Zhang Chunru was very angry and said to her husband Douglas: "This is really unimaginable. Will Mercedes-Benz dare to threaten Newsweek and revoke the advertisement as long as it publishes a Jewish article about the Holocaust?"

Douglas said: "It is impossible. Mercedes-Benz dares to do this and will definitely become a world-class scandal!"

Zhang Chunru said: "Yes, but Japan did this, and Newsweek actually agreed!"

The American media present were not surprised. After all, in the 1990s, Japan ranked second in the world in the economy. Japanese companies were the big funders of magazines such as News Weekly, and China was still very weak, and few companies would publicize American magazines. It is not surprising that News Weekly favored Japanese companies.

The Chinese and Chinese reporters at the scene remembered Cheng Ruifang's words, "If people are weak, others will bully you, and if the country is weak, others will bully you." This is the fact. In the past, China was weak, and no one took the Chinese seriously. Hollywood film and television works were full of prejudice and discrimination against the Chinese, but now the image of Chinese in Hollywood works is becoming more and more positive. Because China is getting stronger and stronger, it has become a big financial supporter in Hollywood. No one wants to be dissatisfied with his wallet!

Douglas said: "What are you going to do?"

Zhang Chunru took a deep breath and calmed herself down: "HarperCollins Press and News Weekly signed a contract. If News Weekly does not publish a book excerpt, they need to give a better explanation. If News Weekly is determined to not publish a book excerpt due to pressure from Japan, I will hold a press conference immediately. I believe that the Chinese community in the United States and many human rights organizations will support me 100%!"

On the evening of November 10, Zhang Chunru received a subscription to Newsweek. She found that the magazines in this issue were particularly thick, and the advertisements of Japanese companies published were exactly twice as many as usual. Zhang Chunru told Douglas that this was a good sign. Newsweek is likely to have reached some compromise with advertisers to ensure that the advertisements of Japanese companies in the next issue are published in this issue, so as to avoid these advertisers facing the "dilemma" of funding the publication of magazines with excerpts from the Nanjing Massacre, a book.

The next morning, Zhang Chunru received an email from the head of the International Department of Newsweek, who told Zhang Chunru that the excerpts would not be published in the issue published on November 24.

Zhang Chunru immediately called Tom Maslin and asked, "What's going on? When will the book excerpt be published? Will it be published?"

Tom Maslin replied: "This is not something I can decide. The book excerpt is not on the publication schedule. It does not tell me why this is the case, nor when it will be published."

After hanging up Tom Maslin's phone call, Zhang Chunru was really angry and immediately called HarperCollins Press and asked how she would protect her rights if Newsweek did not publish the book excerpt. Zhang Chunru told the publisher that they should call Newsweek and ask them what she should say to the reporters if the book excerpt was not published in the magazine published on the 17th or 24th, and whether she should say that Newsweek was under some pressure? Zhang Chunru also asked for compensation to her in accordance with the contract and agreed to accept an interview with reporters on the 17th because she had arranged a speech and interview plan. It was not her fault that the book excerpt could not be published as planned.

On November 12, the legal department of Collins notified Zhang Chunru by email that they had just received a confirmation letter from Newsweek that the Nanjing Massacre book excerpt will be published in the magazine on December 1 and will be launched on November 24. Zhang Chunru's previous publicity for book sales will not affect the final publication of the book excerpt.

Zhang Chunru and the audience in front of the screen were slightly relieved after seeing the email. However, everyone's doubts were not dispelled. Everyone believed that the right wing of Japan would not let it go. Unless they saw the book picks on the market with their own eyes, no one could guarantee that the book picks would appear in the "News Weekly" on December 1.

On November 24th, Zhang Chunru did nothing and sat in her room waiting for the latest issue of "News Weekly". She was like an ant on a hot pan, restless and walking around the room. The hearts of the audience in front of the screen were also tense, and she didn't know if the book pick would be published smoothly.

At 1 pm, Zhang Chunru called the newspaper booth and asked if the "News Weekly" on December 1st was delivered. They told Zhang Chunru that the magazine had not arrived yet. Zhang Chunru asked when it would come, and they replied that it was hard to say, sometimes it was delivered on Mondays, and sometimes it would wait until Tuesday, and even today it would go to the evening.

Not long after, Zhang Chunru couldn't help calling the newspapers and asked if "News Weekly" was available. After that, Zhang Chunru called the newspapers and magazines many times. Until 5 pm, the newspapers and magazines told Zhang Chunru that "News Weekly" had arrived! Zhang Chunru ran out immediately and flipped the magazines like crazy in the newspapers and magazines.

There is no information about book excerpts on the cover of "News Weekly". When you open the magazine, you don't have it in the "Recommended for this issue" on the inner page of the magazine. However, when the audience in front of the screen followed Zhang Chunru's eyes down the magazine's catalog, they saw the title "Expose the Nanjing Massacre". Zhang Chunru breathed a long sigh, and the stone in the audience's heart fell to the ground.

Zhang Chunru stood in front of the newspaper booth, read the book picks twice from beginning to end, then bought five books, and flew home like a happy bird. Zhang Chunru called her husband, her mother and friends to tell everyone the good news.

That night, Zhang Chunru opened "News Weekly" to Douglas, and there was no advertisement for Japanese companies in the entire magazine. They looked through the previous "News Weekly", and each issue basically published advertisements for Japanese companies, including Sony, Toyota, Canon, Toshiba, etc. In addition, there was no special title on the cover of this issue of "News Weekly", and there was no introduction to the book excerpt in the "Recommended for this issue" on the inner page of the magazine. Obviously, "News Weekly" did not want to highlight this book excerpt too much.

Although the excerpts in Newsweek did not appear on the cover title of the current issue and were postponed for two weeks before publication, missing the best book review time, it still greatly helped the book to increase its popularity.

With a quick edit of the camera, the most important newspapers in the United States have begun to publish book reviews about the Nanjing Massacre, including the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. The article in the Washington Post was accompanied by a photo of the interview with the Nanjing Massacre; many other newspapers published photos of the Nanjing Massacre, in which Japanese soldiers were practicing assassination with Chinese people; in the other photo, a Japanese soldier smiled at the camera with a head...

In terms of Chinese media, North American Chinese newspapers reported on Zhang Chunru's new book. On the other end of the Pacific, in mainland China, Xiangjiang and Taiwan, all newspapers also reported on Zhang Chunru's books in large quantities, including the most influential People's Daily.

Large-scale media reports have attracted great attention from Zhang Chunru's books in the United States. At the signing ceremony of Zhang Chunru's "Nanjing Massacre", people lined up in a long queue, including Chinese, white, and black. All bookstores signed by Zhang Chunru were out of stock, and paper in Luoyang was expensive for a while. In just two weeks, "Nanjing Massacre" was printed five times.

On January 15, Zhang Chunru's "Nanjing Massacre" ranked 15th in the New York Times bestseller list!

In front of the screen, Zhang Chunru's parents recalled Zhang Chunru's efforts and sacrifices for the publication of this book; other viewers couldn't help but burst into tears. Shortly after the Nanjing Massacre, Japanese people tried to cover up the truth. They almost did this for decades. The Nanjing Massacre was almost forgotten in the West! But Zhang Chunru tore open the dark side with heavy pressure and told the truth of the world!
