Six hundred and five the usefulness of religion
The talks were held in the military camp of the Tang Dynasty. As the winner and the owner of this land, the Tang Dynasty hosted the Tubo delegation represented by Lu Dongzan as its owner, and the Tang delegation led by Du Ruhui warmly welcomed the Tubo delegation. The two sides held cordial and warm bilateral talks. The meeting discussed a number of important issues. The two sides continued to reach consensus, the atmosphere was harmonious, and they felt good.
"Then, the number and type of items tributed to the Tang Dynasty in Tubo every year has been determined. General Lu Dongzan has no objection, right?" Du Ruhui smiled and handed Lu Dongzan a piece of paper full of words to Lu Dongzan. Lu Dongzan took it over, sighing at the excellent quality of the Tang Dynasty paper, looked at the Chinese characters on it, and nodded: "We have no objection."
Du Ruhui nodded, then picked up the brush and signed his name on a piece of white paper in front of him, then pressed his handprint, and took out the jade seal given to him by His Majesty Li Er to represent the emperor's opinion, and handed it to Lu Dongzan: "Please ask General Lu Dongzan to sign his name on the paper in my way, press the handprint, and then stamp it with the seal representing the Tubo king, and then hand it over to me for safekeeping.
This treaty with my husband's name, hand seal and seal written by the Tubo Kingdom, and this treaty was preserved by the Tang Dynasty. All subsequent related matters will be based on this treaty and will be implemented in full accordance with the treaty. This is the last one, plus all previous treaties, a total of thirty-five terms, and our agreement will be signed."
Lu Dongzan nodded, signed his name, and pressed the handprint. Then he took out the seal that Songzan Gumbu gave him and stamped it. It was said that there was no seal before Tubo. As a result, he heard that the seal was to be used in the meeting. Songzan Gumbu ordered the most powerful carving master to carve a seal representing Tubo Zamp and sent it to Lu Dongzan for his actions.
After Lu Dongzan stamped the seal, he handed the paper in his hand to Du Ruhui. Du Ruhui took the contract and swept it slightly, and expressed satisfaction with it. The first treaty between the Tang Dynasty and the Tubo Kingdom, the Tuyuhun Treaty, was signed.
The Tubo Kingdom officially expressed its submission to the Tang Dynasty and promised to pay tribute to the Tang Dynasty every year to ensure peace around the Tang Dynasty. After the border lines between the two sides were divided, soldiers were not allowed to cross the border. The Tang Dynasty would set up a trading institution for the Tang Dynasty, which is the representative Tang Dynasty embassy in Tubo. In addition, there were 500 troops garrisoned to protect the embassy and all the people of the Tang Dynasty in Tubo.
On the issue of the establishment of the Western Regions Protectorate of the Tang Dynasty, Tubo must keep pace with the Tang Dynasty. If the Tang Dynasty needs it, it must not disobey the demand for sending less than 20,000 troops proposed by the Tang Dynasty, and must be implemented. The Tang Dynasty gave Tubo a golden seal with the "Tubo Kingdom Lord". In the future, all documents between the Tubo and the Tang Dynasty will not be recognized without a golden seal. At the same time, in order to commend Tubo's outstanding performance on the Tuyuhun issue, the Tang Dynasty will reward Tubo with 1,000 kilograms of gold as a sign of commendation.
At the end, both sides signed their representative names on the cover of the treaty belonging to their own country. Press the handprint, then exchange them for signing, and finally exchange them back, indicating that the treaty has been officially signed, and the Tuyuhun Treaty will become the highest standard in the exchanges between the Tang and Tubo from now on, and neither side shall violate it.
The formal topic was finally over, and Lu Dongzan breathed a little relieved. The Tang Dynasty did not make any excessive demands, and did not ask for compensation for money and goods. Instead, he gave Tubo a thousand kilograms of gold as a reward. Although it sounded bad, for the Tubo country with insufficient finances, this thousand kilograms of gold was really useful. Of course, the premise was that the gold was not taken away by those priests. Damn, the gold must not fall into the hands of those priests!
As soon as he thought of this, Lu Dongzan said, "Secret Du, I have a heartless request below, please agree!"
Du Ruhui said, "What's the matter? Tell me."
Lu Dongzan said, "I think Du Xiang doesn't know much about some of the problems in my Tubo. There is a group of priests who occupy the name of righteousness in the name of priests and gods. Most of the Tubo people believe in it and donate most of the food and money of Tubo to them for their squandering. Sometimes, for the sake of the priests and gods, they would rather burn everything than give food to those who were about to starve to death, and even sacrificed living people. Tubo was tortured by them and dying.
Whenever I see these people, I hate them very much, but I have no way to deal with them. Even Zanpu cannot shake their existence. They can only watch those people starve to death and have no choice but to watch the gold rewarded by the Tang Dynasty to Tubo this time, they will definitely take it away with various means. At that time, Tubo will not know how many people will starve to death. Please help Du Xiang to help Tubo, so that the Tubo people will not starve to death anymore!"
Lu Dongzan was so moved that he said that he turned red and bowed to the ground. A hint of alertness flashed in Du Ruhui's eyes. He glanced at Suning beside him, then stood up and helped Lu Dongzan up in a hurry: "Oh, why is General Lu Dongzan? I really didn't expect that there were such people in Tubo who were careless about human life. I really couldn't expect that I would definitely ask about this matter, don't worry!"
Lu Dongzan was delighted and squeezed out a few more tears. He raised his head and was about to express his gratitude to Du Ruhui when he saw Suning beside Du Ruhui stand up and say, "Du Xiang, I think that the Tang Dynasty should not interfere in this matter."
Lu Dongzan was shocked. Suning didn't say a word since the negotiations began. Lu Dongzan thought that Suning was just a mere statement, or was only good at military strategy and not good at other things, so he ignored him a little. As a result, he stood up at this time, but why? What did he refute him?
Du Ruhui felt a little joy in his heart, but his face was very serious, and he said, "What does Deputy Envoy Su mean? The Tang Dynasty is a country of etiquette, and the most important thing is etiquette and the laws of nature. The Tubo priests clearly had food, but they did not want to distribute it to the people. They even wanted to use the people as sacrificial items to worship the so-called gods. The Central Plains have long abolished the rules for sacrificial sacrifices of living people. Is eating the lives of living people called gods? That is a ghost!
What Your Majesty values most is human life. Whenever he talks about the ancient times when he used living people to worship and bury them or focused on sacrifices without caring about life and death, he was very angry and said that such things were not allowed to happen in the territory of the Tang Dynasty. Now Tubo has already surrendered to the Tang Dynasty. As the right servant of the Tang Dynasty, I naturally have to take care of such things. Those who take human life will be killed without mercy!"
Lu Dongzan was even more surprised and thought that this matter was almost certain, but Suning said hesitantly: "Secretarius Du, although this is reasonable. However, those priests were Tubo people after all, and Tubo was a country, not a territory of the Tang Dynasty, nor were they prefectures and counties. Although they were vassals to the Tang Dynasty, the treaty did not stipulate that the Tang Dynasty could involve Tubo's internal affairs.
There are many vassal states around the Tang Dynasty, but the Tang Dynasty has never involved its internal affairs. Although these things sound unkind and unrighteous, this is not the internal affairs of the Tang Dynasty, but the Tubo itself. It is indeed inconvenient for the Tang Dynasty to intervene. If it intervenes, how will the surrounding countries view the Tang Dynasty? Therefore, I think this matter is inappropriate."
Lu Dongzan wanted to tear Suning down because what he was talking about was the most difficult problem. It was also a problem that he had been thinking about all night yesterday, so he gave Datang the right to this. I was afraid that Datang would have other ideas, but if he did not have this right, Datang might not really ignore the priests' misconduct. If he couldn't control the merchants well, it would only make things worse and worse.
Lu Dongzan looked at Du Ruhui anxiously, and his heart was sank. Du Ruhui showed a thoughtful expression and sighed: "Oh, God won't help me. General Lu Dongzan is not that I am unwilling to help, but this matter is related to the reputation of the Tang Dynasty and the views of the surrounding countries. The Tang Dynasty was not only a vassal state, and I also knew that there was a problem with the only one country. However, the Tang Dynasty's promise was not to dare to have vassal states. Otherwise, how would the Tang Dynasty be viewed?
If I intervene at this time, my identity is too special, and I will definitely be noticed and misunderstood by the surrounding vassal states. Therefore, this matter is really not suitable for the Tang Dynasty to intervene. The Tang Dynasty can only express regrets about this matter. Alas, I am ashamed of the Tubo people!" Du Ruhui's face was full of disappointment and regret, and his compassionate look made all the uninformed people feel a little blocked in his heart...
Lu Dongzan was having a fierce ideological struggle in his heart. When he was about to make a decision, Suning suddenly spoke: "Secretary Du, General Lu Dongzan, I think that although the Tang Dynasty cannot interfere in the internal affairs of Tubo, there is no way. If we change the method, even if the Tang Dynasty does not intervene directly, it will still have some effect."
As soon as this statement was said, everyone was interested. Even when Du Ruhui discussed the details of today's talks with Suning all night last night, Suning did not say it. It was not that Suning was unwilling to say it, but that he had just remembered a very important message. Tubo is in Tibet, and the most famous religion in Tibet is Tibetan Buddhism. Suning vaguely remembers that Tibetan Buddhism is the product of the intersection of Indian Buddhism and ancient Xiangxiong Buddhism, and Buddhism naturally does not use living people as sacrifices.
Suning doesn't know which time it was introduced to Tubo in the seventh century AD. It was not known in history books, but it can be roughly estimated that the cannibalism sect of Tubo is currently the one that occupied the mainstream consciousness of Tubo. It seems that after Indian Buddhism was introduced to Tubo, it has fought against the evil local sects of Tubo for hundreds of years. During this period, there were several movements to destroy Buddhism. Now, this means that even if Buddhism was introduced to Tubo, it did not occupy the mainstream.
So don’t let Indian Buddhism do this. Isn’t it enough to directly introduce Middle-earth Buddhism and local Taoism into Tubo? In the Tang Dynasty, Confucianism was adopted to parallelize the three schools of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Confucianism is not a religion, but Buddhism and Taoism are both religions. Taoism is not a small power in Chinese history. Whether it is Zhang Lu’s Five Dogs of Rice Sect or Zhang Jiao’s Yellow Turban Sect, they are all based on Taoist doctrines.
Think about countries such as the Middle East and India that have fierce religious conflicts. For their respective religious beliefs, they are tragic and tragic. The power of religion can even dominate politics, and political power cannot restrain the power of religion. If Taoism, Middle-earth Buddhism, Xiangxiong Buddhism and Indian Buddhism can engage in a fierce religious game between Tubo and local sects, how exciting would it be?
Since the Yellow Turban Rebellion, the ancient Chinese government has attached great importance to the development of religion, especially the fact that religion cannot be allowed to dominate politics. This is both luck and misfortune. Fortunately, China has never had large-scale religious revenge and confrontation. The two major religions, Taoism and Buddhism, compete and coexist in a relatively peaceful way, and do not involve force. In addition to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Rebellion in the late Qing Dynasty, it was also a group of farmers who made random troubles according to the Christianity they understood...
Unfortunately, China has never had its own belief...
