Chapter 44 Preliminary Inquiry

After two hours, the road under the donkey cart finally changed from a muddy dirt road between the woodlands to a stone path filled with flat stones. The surrounding jungle is no longer chaotic, but is arranged in an orderly manner on both sides of the road. Birch trees and ash are mostly these two types, with the natural white trunks complementing the green branches and leaves.

The farm is a distance from the town. Donald caught a glimpse of some town buildings on a small hill that he passed by, but the donkey cart turned and went straight to the farm. Soon Donald saw the wooden fence on the side of the road, and there were also vague sounds of cattle and sheep nearby.

The only regret is this still gloomy sky.

"Recently, it is a rainy month in Puston City. It is probably going to rain in the past two days, which is a big obstacle to the investigation of the case."

Sherlock poured the powder from the cylindrical stone bowl into the fine-mouthed bottle, complaining about the weather, the rain could wash away too many things, and the disappearance happened three days ago. Yesterday's heavy rain left them with few clues.

The trees gradually became sparse, and some warehouses and farm buildings such as cowsheds began to appear on the right. Donald and Sherlock went straight to the three-story house in the middle of the farm. The main material was red bricks and stone. The foundation underneath was very thick, which was similar to the Italian architectural style. There were many bay windows on the front of the house and a balcony in the middle.

At this moment, there was someone on the balcony on the second floor. She was wearing a dress. She leaned against the windowsill, as if she was looking at the mountains and forests in the distance, and could not see the expression on her face.

"I don't know which roof was the previous case of the roof. If I have the chance, I must go to the scene to check it out."

Goron went inside to report the news, and the two stood outside, Sherlock's eyes were on the nearby farm building, while Donald focused on the building in front of him.

No matter from any perspective, the owner of this farm should be a rich man.

The reward should be quite good...

"Two gentlemen, Boss Barthley invites you in."

When he came out again, it was not Goron, but a very neatly managed butler.

In the living room, I met the owner of the farm, Ziel Barthel, a big belly man, sitting on the dark red single sofa with a wooden pipe in his hand. His face, which should have been greasy, looked very haggard and heavy bags of eyes. It seemed that he had not been sleeping well these days.

After introducing each other, Donald and the others also took their seats.

"My request is very simple. Find my daughter as quickly as possible. It doesn't matter if the cattle and sheep are missing. The rewards are easy to negotiate, and you will not disappoint you."

Sitting facing each other, Donald saw Bartley's eyes covered with blood, his face also had an abnormal flush, and he smelled alcohol as he spoke.

"Okay, I have some questions to ask you next. In order to get Miss Audrey back as soon as possible, please answer truthfully."

The general basic situation has been known through Old Hober on the way to come, so there is no need to ask here. What Sherlock wants to know is something that only the person involved knows.

"For my daughter, just ask."

When it comes to Audrey, Bartley's face becomes a little darker.

“What are the conditions for the kidnapper?”

Sherlock's problem is very important. Since it is a kidnapping, the other party must have requirements. By analyzing their demands, a certain anti-tracking effect can be achieved. Even if the other party wants money, there must be a trading location, which is also a countermeasure.

From Chapter 3 of "Detective Minutes": The key elements of the kidnapping case!

“…”

No response.

"Mr. Barthley, what are the conditions for the kidnapper?"

Perhaps because he drank too much wine, he was confused, and Donald, as the accountant, repeated it.

"No conditions! That damn bastard, shit! He didn't put forward any conditions. We have been waiting for three days, without any news... Don't you understand? If he asked for money, I would have prepared gold pounds long ago. Even if the family was not enough, I could immediately borrow money from the bank and redeem my daughter first with this farm... But we did not receive any reply. He only left a note and told us not to call the police!"

The gold ring exposed on Bartley's thick fingers when he spoke proved his financial resources. He was not joking. The reason why he did not call the police or call the detective for three days was because he really planned to spend money to redeem his daughter first.

No matter what the appearance is, this is a competent father.

‘Why is it fun to kidnap others without any conditions?’

Donald and Sherlock looked at each other, and they all had this meaning in their eyes, but Sherlock did not say that it was not the time to joke.

"Mr. Barthley, have you been engaging in hatred recently? For example, the recent acquisition plan has done something less...reasonable."

The kidnapper did not make any obvious requests, which does not mean that the other party has no desires. Naturally, it is not that he really kidnapped people because of fun. The other party's purpose is probably to involve Ziel Barthel's energy, making him unable to deal with other things in a short period of time.

"I don't have a recent acquisition plan. If there is such a big thing on the farm, I don't have the energy to think about it. As for hatred... If you do business, it's impossible to say that no one is offended. But I can guarantee that I have never forced anyone to a dead end. Even if it's a acquisition, I will offer a reasonable price based on the situation, and at least leave a way out for the other party. In this way, I won't kidnap my daughter, right? If I let me know which bastard, I will definitely make him pay the real price. Do I really think that I, Ziel Barthel, aren't angry?"

Bartley's emotions became more and more excited as he spoke, and alcohol greatly reduced his control.

"Your daughter has had abnormal behavior recently. Have she had an argument with you?"

Some of the kidnapping cases are self-acting, that is, kidnapping yourself, and achieving certain goals in this way. If Audrey did this kidnapping herself, then she really has reason to leave only a note that she cannot call the police, because Bartley must know the goal she wants to achieve.

"Abnormal behavior...I don't know. Some time ago, I was busy dealing with the disappearance of cattle and sheep on the farm and didn't pay much attention to her. Douglas went to call my wife down. She and Audrey have been together. I think there will be some clues."

It is understandable that a father who is busy with work has less attention to his children, but Donald is a little surprised, why did Mr. Barthley's wife have to send someone to look for her after they have been here for so long?
