Chapter 21 Suboptimal Choices

.When the flight attendant went to the front cabin, Mu Haoyang looked back at Teng Yaohui and others who were closing their eyes to rest, and then he touched Lu Wen sitting next to him with his elbow.

Lu Wen turned her eyes, as if waiting for Mu Haoyang to speak.

"Lu...Lu Wen, I don't know if I should say something."

"What's the matter?"

"I... Mr. Huang has talked to me about things related to you, I..."

Lu Wen did not speak, but just held Mu Haoyang's right hand and answered with actions.

Mu Haoyang hesitated for a moment and wanted to retract his hand, but he did not have the "courage".

The two of them didn't say a word, a small move was enough.

Along the way, Mu Haoyang was very nervous. But he knew that everything had been decided when he did not retract his hand.

It was not until the plane began to descend that Mu Haoyang came to his senses and found that Lu Wen was already asleep leaning against his shoulder.

Really asleep?

Mu Haoyang did not move, but noticed Zhou Yusheng, who was sitting across the aisle, nodding and smiling at him.

This guy must have been watching the fun all the time.

When the flight attendant came over and reminded him to fasten his seat belt, Lu Wen woke up and smiled at Mu Haoyang, as if he was a little embarrassed about his behavior.

"I heard you are going to solve the technical problems?" Mu Haoyang could only find nothing to say.

"It's almost the same, relax." Lu Wen smiled and said, "I've been busy for several months, so I have to give us some private time."

"Is there any fun place in Dalian?"

Lu Wen was stunned for a moment and looked at Mu Haoyang with some disbelief.

"Although I went there dozens of times, I didn't have time to go out for a walk." Mu Haoyang forced a smile and said, "And when I went alone, I didn't feel like wandering around."

"You have been studying in Dalian for four years and haven't left school?"

"Of course I've been out, I've just wandered around."

"You're too capable, right?"

Mu Haoyang smiled and said, "The habit I developed in the army. If I land on Mars in the future, I will definitely be able to overcome all the tests."

"Okay, after finishing the business, I'll take you around."

"You're very familiar with it?"

"Is that right? When I was a child, I ran around the country. I lived in Dalian for two years and often went on business trips to Dalian. I know more about it."

At this time, the plane landed on the runway.

Because the domestic aircraft carrier will start construction on January 10th, which is tomorrow, when he arrived at the shipyard, Mu Haoyang first accompanied Lu Wen to meet Chief Engineer Hou Mingyao.

The transformation project of the "Huangdi" was confirmed at the end of December, so on the domestic aircraft carrier, Hou Mingyao is not only the chief engineer, but also the deputy chief designer.

He did not become the chief designer mainly to take care of the two major shipbuilding groups.

According to the order placed by the Navy, two domestic aircraft carriers will be built at the same time, one in Dalian and the other in Shanghai. Therefore, it was determined that the Jiangnan Shipyard will be responsible for the overall design during the bidding stage, and the Dalian Shipyard will be responsible for the engineering planning, concentrating all the resources of the two major shipyards to ensure the smooth progress of the construction work.

In addition to the distribution of interests, this also has an extremely important reason: establishing a construction system for two large warships.

Although initial investment increased by about 30% compared with signing a contract with a shipyard alone, the long-term benefits are more obvious.

You should know that the Chinese Navy needs more than two aircraft carriers.

Only with full competition can more advanced aircraft carriers be built in the future, and the construction costs of aircraft carriers can be reduced through competition.

If everything goes well, the Navy will launch a new aircraft carrier construction plan around 2025.

By first building two aircraft carriers and accumulating necessary technology and experience, starting from the second domestic aircraft carrier, the construction scale will definitely be expanded.

Conservatively estimated that at least four second-class domestically produced aircraft carriers will be built.

If one shipyard bears it, it will not only be costly, but also have a very long construction cycle. There are two shipyards that can ensure that at least two ships are built at the same time.

Of course, the key depends on whether the construction of the first-class domestic aircraft carrier is smooth.

To this end, the Navy also lowered its technical standards.

After canceling the J-15 improvement order and only renovating the existing fighter jets, the Navy finally had to choose the J-22 medium-sized multi-purpose fighter jet jointly developed with the Air Force. Compared with the J-15, the J-22 is a large circle smaller, so it can reduce the displacement of the aircraft carrier while ensuring the basic number of aircraft carriers.

According to this standard, the full load displacement of domestic aircraft carriers is only 55,000 tons, which is a big circle smaller than the "Huangdi".

Of course, this does not mean that the combat effectiveness of domestic aircraft carriers is very poor.

Under standard conditions, domestic aircraft carriers can carry forty-four J-22s and eight helicopters. If the electromagnetic catapult scheme is finally adopted, four fixed-wing early warning aircraft can be added. In high-intensity combat mode, eighteen fighters and four helicopters can be tied on the flight deck, expanding the scale of the carrier to seventy-eight, and the 62 fighters of three brigades are enough to cope with high-intensity combat operations.

In terms of strike capabilities, domestic aircraft carriers surpassed the "Yellow Emperor", the "Queen Elizabeth" class of the British Royal Navy and the "Charles de Gaulle" class of the French Navy. They are much stronger than the two Indian aircraft carriers, second only to the "Nimitz" class and "Ford" class of the US Navy.

Reducing the displacement has another benefit: the power system has more power surplus.

According to the initial design, domestic aircraft carriers will each have two HFK-1 reactors, and when sailing at thirty knots, they still have about 30% of the surplus power. If the major power users on the aircraft carrier are not considered, the maximum speed can reach thirty-three knots. If it is set to thirty knots, it can provide electricity for various new weapons.

Obviously, this benefit is very obvious.

For example, when designing, you don’t have to consider the burden caused by electromagnetic catapults. Even if it cannot be installed immediately, you can still be modified and fashioned.

More importantly, aircraft carriers can be equipped with more energy weapons.

For example, the electromagnetic pulse rapid-fire cannon under development.

Of course, reducing the drainage volume also has negative effects.

For example, under normal circumstances, the continuous combat time of domestic aircraft carriers is only seven days. If the combat intensity is increased, ammunition supply will be carried out every three days. If the aircraft carrier battle group wants to obtain strong continuous combat capabilities, more rapid comprehensive supply ships must be built.

For the Chinese Navy, this is not a big problem.

For a long time to come, the main task of the Chinese Navy is to seize and utilize sea control. The main task of the aircraft carrier battle group is to fight against the enemy's fleet. Without too many strikes and support tasks, it is even less likely that it will become the main force in ground strikes like the US Navy.

Otherwise, the Navy would not actively reduce the performance indicators of aircraft carriers.

Of course, in early 2020, all of this was a beautiful idea, not a reality.

According to the standard construction procedures, the hull of the aircraft carrier will be built first, and it will take at least two years before the main supporting equipment, such as electromagnetic catapults.

In this way, the existing technical problems must be solved within two years.

Lu Wen came here specifically to solve these problems.

As the main person in charge of naval equipment construction, Mu Haoyang knew very well that after Pu Yuting ensured that the HFK-1 reactor could be delivered before the end of 2021, the primary factor affecting the construction progress of domestic aircraft carriers and the "Huangdi" transformation project was the electromagnetic catapult.

In a sense, catapults are more important than aircraft carriers themselves.

The reason is very simple: without catapults, fixed-wing carrier-based early warning aircraft cannot board the aircraft carrier, and the aircraft carrier battle group cannot establish a complete command and intelligence system.

Initially, the Chinese Navy focused on steam catapults.

As early as the beginning of this century, intelligence agencies managed to obtain some technical information from Ukraine and Russia on the development of steam catapults in the former Soviet Union through various means.

These technical data have become the basis for China's development of steam catapults.

The problem is that before the disintegration, the former Soviet Union failed to create a steam catapult, many technical problems were not solved, and China did not have corresponding technical accumulation.

Around 2010, the first domestic catapult was released.

At this time, the Navy used the technical data of the yak-44 to develop a fixed-wing carrier-based early warning aircraft.

The problem is that the performance of domestic catapults did not meet the expected expectations, not only did the power not be improved, but also encountered trouble in miniaturization work.

After the outbreak of the Second Korean War, the Navy launched a backup plan, namely, to develop electromagnetic catapults.

This choice is not wrong, because even if the steam catapult is created, it will face the embarrassing situation of being backward as soon as it comes out. Only by focusing on the development of electromagnetic catapults can the problem be fundamentally solved. Otherwise, when the development of the second domestic aircraft carrier is started around 2020, the electromagnetic catapults still have to be developed. From the perspective of cost-effectiveness, if the steam catapult is only an emergency product and only equipped with two aircraft carriers, it is not cost-effective.

However, in this way, the construction of the first domestic aircraft carrier will be delayed.

It is precisely because around 2017, when the development of electromagnetic catapults was made major breakthroughs, and several key technologies were conquered, the Navy launched the construction plan for domestic aircraft carriers.

It has been very good to complete the basic design within three years.

You should know that it took seven years to design the US Ford class aircraft carrier.

In order not to delay any further, the Navy could only start the aircraft carrier construction project according to pre-planning, that is, to put the aircraft carrier on the horse before the electromagnetic catapult was basically formed.

The problem that this leads to is that the development of electromagnetic catapults must be carried out strictly in accordance with the planned progress.

No system project, especially large system project, can be carried out strictly according to the plan, and no one can predict the troubles that may be encountered in the development process.

This is how the development of electromagnetic catapults was done. When the domestic aircraft carrier was started, the development progress had been delayed for three months.

Even the most optimistic estimate is impossible to complete all the development work before the end of 2022, and it is even more impossible to load and use it in a ship.

Even if it is reluctant, the Navy will compromise with reality.

Lu Wen found Hou Mingyao to solve this problem, and there were only two solutions, either delaying the construction progress of the aircraft carrier or changing the basic design.

Obviously, neither of these choices are ideal...
