Chapter 46 - Hunting in the Cave
Delphi, the capital of Fokis, is located at the foot of the famous holy mountain, Panasos. It is a typical mountain city.
Between Kira and Delphi City, there is a relatively vast plain area. The target Xin Sheng is looking for is hiding in the hilly areas near the eastern plain and the Panasos Mountains.
Under the guidance of Daedalus, Xin Sheng and Rhubarb shuttled through the dense primitive jungle and advanced to the target location through the shortest straight line distance.
There are many wild animals in the mountains and forests. Fortunately, there was a reminder from Daedalus that Xin Sheng and Dahuang avoided the area where the wild beast bears and wolves appeared, and approached the wild cave where the target was without any danger.
Xin Sheng didn't know why this guy who was suspected of a member of the Divine Cult left the city and lived in a cave, but his quirk gave Xin Sheng an excellent opportunity to attack.
"Cry!"
Daedalus made a slightly sharp chirping, and Xin Sheng hurriedly squatted down, using the shrubs in the woods as a cover to quietly observe the situation ahead.
A naturally formed cave appeared less than 100 meters ahead of Xin Sheng, and a white skeleton could be seen not far ahead.
He moved carefully to the skeleton in a squat position, and Xin Sheng carefully identified it.
Judging from the structure of the bone, we can first determine that it does not come from humans, but some kind of beast walking on all fours.
‘The specifications of this skeleton…bear?’
There are still some dark red marks left in the soil under the skeleton, which should be traces left by this long-dead creature.
Rhubarb was already consciously buried in her head and began to look for the smell. The strong bloody smell soon made Rhubarb find it successfully, and the clues of the smell pointed all the way to the inside of the cave.
‘Do you use bears as food? No wonder you dare to live alone in the wild.’
As Xin Sheng approached the cave silently, Dahuang's ears began to tremble, and it was the first to hear some movement.
Xin Sheng also caught some noise as he continued to get closer, as if it was the "crackling" sound made when the firewood burned.
Daedalus landed from the air and docked on a big tree facing the cave. His bright eagle eyes stared straight into the cave, helping the owner monitor the target's actions.
As long as Daedalus did not issue an early warning, it proved that the other party had not noticed that someone was approaching his temporary nest.
Xin Sheng took off the hunting bow from behind and signaled Dahuang to prepare on the spot and wait for his orders.
Dahuang stopped without hesitation and watched his master approach the mountain wall outside the cave. His bright eyes kept looking at Xin Sheng with vigilance, waiting for the next order.
He slowly pulled the string of the pulling bowstring with a light action. Xin Sheng glanced at Daedalus on the tree and then quietly poked his head out.
A strong figure in a bear-skin coat turned his back to the entrance of the cave, and was busy with something in front of a simple stone table built by artificially.
The strange smell of blood and human shit and urine odor floated out of the cave. Xin Sheng resisted the pungent and unpleasant smell and frowned and observed the bear skin monster.
There are many things on the stone table. First, there is a black robe that is folded very neatly, and a white mask with strange patterns is placed above the robe.
A broad sword was placed horizontally on the other side of the robe, and a large round shield was placed on the side of the stone table.
This kind of defensive enemy has little relationship with Xin Sheng.
‘Try to solve it remotely.’
Perhaps it is because of confidence that no one will find this cave in the wilderness, and the bearskin people are quite confident in their own safety.
While flipping through the letters in front of the stone table, he was still humming an unknown tune softly.
Behind the bearskin man was a burning fire, and an irregular log was not far from the fire.
Valuable items including luggage, purse and other items were all next to the logs. Xin Sheng also saw another animal skin spread on the ground near the fire, which should be the place where bearskin people sleep at night.
Out of a cautious habit, Xin Sheng carefully observed at the entrance of the cave.
‘There is indeed a trap.’
Following the trigger mechanism of the trap, Xin Sheng found a row of sharp wooden stakes above the cave.
Once someone enters the cave, the mechanism will be triggered, and the tied wooden stakes will strike with a bang, and the person who is hit will be half-dead if he does not die.
"Squeak~"
When the bow string is full, there will inevitably be some sound. Xin Sheng slows down the rhythm of the bow and minimizes the noise as much as possible.
"Swoosh!"
The sudden cold arrow made the bear skin man completely unresponsive. The sniper arrow shot by Xin Sheng directly pierced the bear skin's neck, and the bright red blood quickly dyed the bear skin bright colors.
"Ho! Hoo!"
The strong bear skin man who was caught in the arrow covered his neck in pain and turned around with a pale face.
A rough face full of beard appeared in front of Xin Sheng. The man was about 40 years old, his face was covered with wind and frost, and his temples covered under the bear's skin were already a little white.
After struggling unwillingly for a moment, the bearskin man finally broke off with his eyes wide open.
Dodging away from the mechanism at the entrance of the cave, Xin Sheng called Dahuang to enter the cave carefully.
Xin Sheng's eyes carefully checked around under the light of the fire to find out if there were other mechanisms.
The bearskin man seemed to have only installed a trap to enter the door at the entrance of the cave. Until Xin Sheng walked to his body with his back facing the sky, he did not find any traces of other traps.
After confirming the death of the bear skin man, Xin Sheng ignored the corpses on the ground and first came to the stone table where he was busy with his previous work.
A thin piece of papyrus was spread open on the table by several heavy objects, and one of the heavy objects made Xin Sheng's pupils shrink slightly.
It was a dark golden triangle flake.
When Xin Sheng touched his hand to the surface of the sheet, the system that remained silent issued a prompt.
"After detecting the energy fluctuation of the Eden Artifact, it can be converted into 100 points of energy after absorption. Is it absorbed?"
Xin Sheng gave an answer without hesitation: "No."
This thin slice is just one of the fragments of the split Eden Artifact. After that, Xin Sheng needs it as a token to complete his infiltration plan.
He ordered Dahuang to be on the alert, and Xin Sheng began to read the text recorded on the papyrus.
The history of papyrus can be traced back to 3000 BC and is the carrier used by the ancient Egyptians to record texts.
Ancient Egypt, rooted in North Africa, exported this characteristic commodity to Mediterranean civilizations such as ancient Greece. Even the distant inland Europe and West Asia have widely used this primitive paper.
A map is drawn on this book, which roughly shows that it seems to be the Aegean islands in eastern Greece.
Most of the islands were crossed out by black forks, and there were more than a dozen of them left on the larger islands.
Xin Sheng touched his chin thoughtfully: "The Order God Cult is looking for something on countless islands in the Aegean Sea?"
Thousands of islands of all sizes are scattered on the Aegean Sea, and this map includes all the large islands.
Xin Sheng was not familiar with Greek maps and did not know what the remaining islands were.
Roll up the papyrus again, Xin Sheng put it into his portable backpack behind him, ready to wait until he meets with Barnabas before asking him that the experienced old captain should know the names of these islands.
Apart from this parchment, the unknown bearskin man left no other valuable clues.
His luggage only contains a decent set of ancient Greek one-piece purple robe, which should be used in formal occasions.
Xin Sheng glanced at the completely naked corpse under the bear skin in a speechless manner.
"This guy is still a noble? Why do you like to live in the wilderness..."
Considering that it may be used in the future, Xin Sheng packed all the black robes, masks and other items representing the identity of the Order God Cult.
The sword and shield, which are difficult to carry and are easily traced to the origin, are buried on the spot with the corpse in the nearby forest.
After leaving the cave, Xin Sheng, who was in a good mood, threw the fragments of the Eden artifact up and down.
"With this robe, mask and this piece of fragment as a token, I can openly mingle with the assembly of the Order God Church."
