Chapter 19 Chang'an Tour (1)
Chang'an City in the Han Dynasty was different from the Tang Dynasty. Although the city was also very large in scale, most of the real Chang'an City was palaces.
The famous Weiyang Palace and Changle Palace alone occupy nearly half of the city's area. In addition, there are large palace groups such as Gui Palace, Bei Palace, Mingguang Palace, etc.
There is also a large Jianzhang Palace outside the city, and the larger area, which is said to span several counties and is 300 miles long.
Rather than saying that Chang'an City was a city during the Han Dynasty, it was more like a huge imperial palace and government agencies gathering place.
The nobles and ministers in Chang'an City usually live in some high-end gathering sites, including Qili. Most of the ordinary people in the city live near Xuanping Gate in the northeast corner of the city.
According to literature, there are eight streets (long streets) and nine streets (horizontal streets) in Chang'an like chessboards that divide the entire city into several residential areas.
These residential areas are divided into 160 neighborhoods, including Qili, and are called 160 neighborhoods. "The room is lined up and the doors and alleys are straight."
Most of the people in the city are handicraftsmen and employees of various government offices. Many of them work in Shaofu and the arsenal.
It is obvious that Chang'an City in this era did not have complete urban functions. Moreover, it was impossible to live in hundreds of thousands of people in the city.
The real situation is that there was a system unique in the history of thousands of years, the magistrate system.
A tomb is a tomb, and a city is a city. The combination means a city that relies on a tomb.
‘The tombs of heroes from the Five Tombs are not seen, and the fields are made without flowers or wine.’
‘The young man from Wuling is in the east of the city, and the white horse in the silver saddle is swaying the spring breeze.’
The five tombs mentioned in these poems refer to the five tombs located outside Chang'an City in the Western Han Dynasty, opposite the Wei River.
Changling of Emperor Gaozu of Han Liu Bang and Lu Zhi.
Anling of Emperor Hui of Han Liu Ying and Zhang Yan.
Yangling of Emperor Jing of Han Liu Qi.
It is famous and the largest, and is known as the Pyramid of China. It is also buried with Wei Qing and Huo Qubing. It belongs to Maoling, Emperor Wu of Han, Liu Che.
The last one is Pingling of Emperor Zhao of Han Liu Fuling.
Of course, when Su Chen arrived, Maoling was still under construction, and Pingling was even more invisible. The most important urban agglomerations outside Chang'an City are Changling, Anling and Yangling.
When Liu Tingchang captured the world and established his capital in Chang'an City, the world was not peaceful, especially in the Kanto area, rebellions occurred one after another.
For example, a rebellion that was like a dozen people gathered to drink. After drinking high, they dared to jump on the table and sing flags and shouted, "Is there any king, prince, general, and minister?", which is really uncountable.
As for the reason, it is very simple. The Chinese people in this era have not been severed by the Confucian yan who maintained their rule.
There are many generous and tragic people in Yan and Zhao, and the famous Wei Wuzhang and Zhao knights are from this.
Although the land of Qilu is the base camp of Confucianism, they are not the mainstream at this time. The martial artists in the land of Qilu are famous all over the world.
As for the Chu State in the south, it has only been a few years since the Chu and Han Dynasty competed for hegemony. The loyalty to Liu Ting-Chief was really wrapped in a big question mark.
The entire Guandong was not relieved, so Chief Liu Ting adopted Liu Jing's suggestion and moved all the powerful families in the Kanto area, including their families and the entire family, to Guanzhong to serve his tomb, Changling. He also built cities around Changling, allowing these people to live in the cities.
After several generations of emperors followed suit, and they would cut leeks every few decades, moving all the powerful families in Kanto to Guanzhong, forming a satellite city centered on the magistrates.
As for the reason for doing this, it doesn’t matter if ordinary mud-legged men rebelled, and the country pavilion chiefs could settle them.
But these powerful families are different. They have many relatives and a large number of servants and tenants. It is not difficult to pull up thousands of people if they make trouble.
Moreover, the mud legs were mostly using some swords, guns, arrows and sticks, and they could have a few pieces of leather armor if they were struggling to death. Facing the fully armed regular army, they basically had no resistance.
But the powerful clans are different. They have the financial resources to prepare for the real iron armor and are equipped with powerful crossbows and horses. The combat power is completely different.
In the era of cold weapons, iron armor had a very strong effect. For example, Nurhaci, who was feeding horses, made his fortune with thirteen pairs of iron armor.
Therefore, in the era of cold weapons, the government did not prohibit the people from possessing swords, guns, swords, and even bows and arrows. However, if anyone dares to hide iron armor privately, it is a serious crime to commit a rebellion and kill the whole family.
So now the question is, the real prosperous place of Chang'an City is actually in several satellite cities outside the city. Where should Su Chen and Qin Yuexi come out of the Qi who are located in front of Weiyang Palace and between the Jiaofang Hall and the Shaofu, if they want to go shopping?
Should I go out of the city and go to the satellite city? Or should I see the massive and daunting Weiyang Palace that I can see when I go out?
The answer given by Su Chen is to go to both sides of Hengmen Street in the northwest corner, where there is Jiushifafang, including the east and west cities, which is the most prosperous and lively place in the entire Chang'an City.
Walking on the wide and straight street, Su Chen, who was carrying his hands on his back, looked at Qin Yuexi's feet and asked curiously, "Does your feet hurt?"
It has been a long way to go out of the family, and Su Chen doesn't care, but usually women will sigh and complain about why there is no BMW after walking such a long way.
But Qin Yuexi was very excited along the way, taking photos everywhere with her cell phone, without looking tired at all.
Qin Yuexi raised her eyebrows and raised her feet to Su Chen.
Only then did Su Chen see that under the long skirt that was almost dragged to the ground, he was not wearing the high heels he had imagined, but a pair of soft deer-skin boots.
"It's really unbelievable." Qin Yuexi, with a blushing face, pointed to the towering trees such as locust trees on the roadside, covering the sunny shade of locust trees such as elm, pine, cypress. "This was two thousand years ago, and the roads and greening here were not bad at all compared to ours. Moreover, these trees are much better looking than those French sycamore trees with hair."
Su Chen looked at the clean and tidy bluestone road on the ground, and then looked at the rows of trees on both sides of the road. "It's really outstanding. Do you know that in the west, Rome City, although it is ranked as the largest international city in the world with Chang'an City at this time. However, at this time, except for a few temples and other places in the city, the rest of the city was very dirty. It is impossible to compare with Chang'an City."
Qin Yuexi nodded repeatedly, "You are right."
Su Chen grinned, “Do you know what I’m talking about?”
Because of the incredible ultra-time travel, Qin Yuexi was in an inexplicable state of excitement. She wanted to deal with the topic she knew if she couldn't understand, but Su Chen pointed it out.
After a little awkwardness, Qin Yuexi looked around and began to change the topic, "Why do you dress like this? Everyone around you seems to have not seen it. I am obviously wearing Hanfu, why are you looking at me?"
Su Chen was wearing casual clothes, which was naturally very conspicuous in this era.
Originally, Su Chen wanted to tell Qin Yuexi that since Zhang Qian opened the Western Regions, there have been a steady stream of merchants and envoys from various countries from the Western Regions who came along with the Silk Road.
The people of Chang'an City are used to seeing those blondes and blue-eyed ones. They are black-haired and dark-eyed ones, but they are wearing something weird. What is that?
Su Chen smiled slightly, stretched out his hand to pull up a thread of black hair in Qin Yuexi's ear, "They look at you, that's because you are beautiful."
No woman doesn’t like being praised by men. If she has feelings for this man, she likes it even more.
Qin Yuexi, whose cheeks were red, smiled like a flower, and her beautiful big eyes were smiling like a crescent moon. She stepped forward and hugged Su Chen's arm, "Go to the commercial street quickly, I want to buy souvenirs."
Is there a commercial street in Chang'an City? Of course there are.
The commercial district of Chang'an City is the so-called city. Even people who engage in business have their household registration as city registration.
Doing business in Chang'an City has a designated location. Doing business outside the designated location is a crime. Not only will you confiscate all your property, but you will also be fined.
Therefore, all the merchants and handicraft workshops in Chang'an City are concentrated in nine cities designated by the government.
Nine cities are located in the northwest of the city. Here you can go through Zhongwei Bridge and you will find Wuling. The transportation is convenient and the business is prosperous.
Three of them are in the east, called East City, and six are in the west, called West City.
The East and West Market meaning in the Mulan poem "Buy a horse in the east market, buy a saddle in the west market."
The nine cities in Chang'an City are West Six and East Three. The west cities seem to be large in number, but in fact they are not very influenced at all and have not much passenger flow in normal times.
For example, Liushi in the West City sells wicker weaving fabrics and some other small handmade products, which are gathering places for the handmade weaving industry.
There is also Huai City, which is concentrated in the financial industry, which is a gathering place for some usury and pawn shops.
There was nothing to see and nothing to buy after going to these places. So Su Chen took Qin Yuexi to Dongshi.
Dongshi is prosperous, and most valuable handicrafts and commercial activities are concentrated in Dongshi.
The first thing Su Chen and Qin Yuexi went to was the direct market, which was actually a vegetable market, where fish, meat and vegetables were concentrated.
Chang'an City has a large population, and the residents recorded in the data are more than 200,000.
If the royal family, servants, slaves, soldiers, etc. are counted, it will be at least more than 500,000. In addition, there are many merchant envoys from the Western Regions, and the number is also quite large.
With so many people having to eat and eat every day, you can imagine how big this direct market is.
As you can see, there are various stalls on both sides of the street.
There were cattle, sheep, pigs and dogs on the butcher shop, and the butcher sellers shouted loudly to attract customers.
There are corn and wheat sold in the rice shop, and the most customers are in and out. After all, for poor families, it doesn’t matter if they can’t eat meat a year, but it doesn’t work if they can’t eat a day.
There were more vegetables on the vegetable stalls. Since Zhang Qian brought back a large number of seeds from crops from the Western Regions, the dining tables of the Han Dynasty have become rich.
Such as cucumbers, garlic, coriander, cabbage, mustard greens, green onions, leeks, etc. There are also selling pomegranates, grapes, peaches, plums, dates, pears, etc.
Su Chen stood in front of a stall selling dates, looking at the jujubes piled up in front of him, but in his mind, Guan Yu, who had made his debut, was said to have made a living by making dates.
