Chapter 409 Churchill who can't afford to lose

In a messy and stuffy little room at 10 Downing Street, which smells of old books and cigar butts, Donovan, the envoy of US President Roosevelt, met the fat British Prime Minister again. Churchill's big red face looked serious and firm. He sucked the cigar butts and said slowly in a low voice:

"That Italian leader is a clown who can only brag. He is completely incomparable to the three real villains, including Emperor William, Prime Minister Hitler and Marshal Hessman."

Donovan understood why Churchill said this as soon as he met. This was because Italy has been in a state of excitement in the past two days, and everyone cheered for the victory of the invincible fascist navy and the fascist air force.

And Donovan himself came from the United States for this matter!

"It's better, Mr. Prime Minister," Donovan said, "because it's really hard for the President to help Britain now."

Moreover, if the Italians really wiped out half of the British Mediterranean fleet as they boasted, then by January next year, Churchill would have to deal with President Wilkie because if Britain lost Egypt and the Suez Canal before November 1940, then there would be a drastic change in American public opinion.

The opposition to Germany aroused by France's failure will fade away because of the prospect of Britain's defeat. After all, the United States is a very practical country. If Britain will inevitably fail before the United States is ready for war, then the United States will not be able to fight alone to defeat Germany and Italy without the springboard of Britain. The United States cannot even go up to the European continent, so how can it win?

Since the United States cannot defeat Germany and Italy, then what else is necessary to fight? If the United States does not have to participate in the world war, then who needs a competent commander-in-chief Roosevelt? Why is Roosevelt, who has already served as two presidents, still has to be re-elected for three times without the rules?

"Prime Minister," Donovan said, "before the November voting day, Egypt and the Suez Canal must not be occupied by the Italians!"

"Of course we won't fail!" After hearing this, Churchill said angrily, "That's Italians. Do you Americans think they are the same as the Germans? How could our British Empire lose to Italy? How could such a thing happen?"

"That would be great," Donovan continued, "Mr. President and the leaders of the two parties in Congress reached an agreement that if we could rent a naval base on the British islands in the Caribbean, they would agree to hand over 50 sealed destroyers to Britain."

This is a very difficult condition to accept! Churchill frowned and exchanged British land for ships would only make Parliament feel embarrassed.

At this time, Donovan smiled bitterly, "There is another condition that the president also requires a written guarantee that once Germany invades and wins, the British fleet shall not surrender or escape to Germany, but must sail to the American port."

"I can't think about this at all, let alone write it into a document." Churchill immediately became angry and said angrily, "The German ship has a lot of practical experience in escape and surrender. But we don't."

Roosevelt's request was actually related to Mussolini's bragging. The US President consulted some senior naval generals. They all believed that the Italians' victory in the Mediterranean was not only possible but also taken for granted!

Their "hunchback" aircraft has such capabilities! In the early years, the US Army purchased several civilian "hunchback" through private enterprises. This is a passenger aircraft for research. It was found that its maximum speed exceeds 400 kilometers per hour and its maximum range can reach 3,300 kilometers. This is the 1935 model. Now the Italian Air Force's "hunchback" aircraft must have better engines, and must be a medium-sized bomber and torpedo attack aircraft with very superior performance. If the number is as high as hundreds of aircraft, the US Navy believes that there must be hundreds of Italians, then the dozens of sea spitfires in the British Mediterranean Fleet cannot resist it.

The US Navy Minister of Operations told Roosevelt that referring to the Scapa Bay bombing, the United States already knew some related situations and the sneak attack in the Port of Toulon, as long as the Italian fascist air force performs normally, it will definitely cause heavy losses to the British Mediterranean Fleet.

Moreover, several senior generals of the US Navy were very surprised by General Cunningham's "random command". They believed that if such a confused general was commanding the British Royal Navy, Britain would probably lose if it was not, and Britain would definitely lose! Therefore, the US Navy had to consider accepting the remaining ships of the British Royal Navy.

"This kind of danger should not be great." Donovan did not insist anymore, and he knew that this problem embarrassed Churchill.

"Yeah, that's not a big possibility," Churchill said. "I agree completely." He said as he found a stack of photos and handed them to Donovan. The photos were some powerful warships and hulls that had not yet been outfitted.

"These are all the fleets that the three bad guys, Emperor William, Hitler and Hessmann were preparing to invade," Churchill said. "The Bismarck-class battleships have been built. There are currently two, which look like 50,000 tons. The Hindenburg-class and Zeppelin-class have not been built. The former is estimated to be 60,000 tons of battleships, and the latter is said to be 340,000 tons of aircraft carriers. If the Germans conquered North Africa and the Middle East, they would have the shipyards of France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden help them build such warships together!"

Taking over the Middle East and North Africa means having the oil of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Egypt's cotton and food, Turkey's non-ferrous metals and chromite, and it can further extend its claws to the rich India. In this way, the Germans have enough resources to win over other European countries, and the end of Britain will be almost out of the way.

"But this also means that Germany will not invade in the short term," Donovan looked through the photos. "The unbuilt ships on it will not be put into service until at least 1942."

"It seems they are preparing to invade in 1942," Churchill said, "we still have a chance."

Churchill raised his thick lower lip and looked at Donovan. "But before that we will fight back, using a four-engine heavy bomber!" He handed a photo to Donovan, which was a four-engine heavy bomber parked on the runway. "We are going to build a large number of bombers like this to blow Germany up. If you are willing to join, victory will come sooner."

"But the premise is that Egypt and the Middle East cannot be lost, that is a battlefield that cannot be lost!" Donovan put the photo on the table and said, "If the Germans had enough oil and the productivity of the entire continent, it would be their four-engine heavy bombers that bombed Britain flat."

"I understand!" Churchill smiled, "Please rest assured that there will be no accidents in the Mediterranean and North Africa. It belongs to the British Empire and no one can take it away!"

Churchill's big talk was not a mess. Before meeting Donovan, he had just approved the plan to send reinforcements to North Africa and the Mediterranean. Wavell and Cunningham will get everything they want!

"From now until 42 years, it will be a precious rest period."

In a conference room at the General Staff of Thosson University, Hessman is presiding on an arms work meeting. France will hold a referendum in August to decide which surrender plan to accept. However, the poll results show that France will become a member of the European Customs Union and the European Currency Union.

Due to France's "necessary surrender", Germany has no opponents on the European continent for the time being. Therefore, the production of arms must also be adjusted accordingly. The production of tanks, armored vehicles and cannons can be slowed down, while the production of various warships and transport ships must be accelerated.

However, Hessman did not dare to take it lightly. After all, there was a giant in the east of Germany. The Soviet Union existed!

"But in 42 years, a more intense war will come." He glanced at the Arms Committee member in the conference room and said, "So the military preparations cannot be relaxed at all! The large-diameter 75 guns used in the No. 4 tank must be fully developed within the year. Before June 41, all No. 4 tanks of the National Defense Forces must be upgraded! The development of the 4,045-ton fifth tank and the 5,055-ton six tank must be completed before June 1942."

The development of tanks No. 5 and No. 6 began in 1937 and 1938. Hessman's request at that time was that No. 5 was a 4045-ton tank, equipped with a large diameter 75 gun No. 6 was a 5055-ton tank, and equipped with a large diameter 88 gun. Both tanks must have good power systems and strong inclined armor.

"The upgrade of Air Force equipment must also be carried out," Hessman continued. "The final solution for high-altitude high-speed piston fighters, heavy-piston carrier-based solutions and practical solutions for turbojet fighters must all complete the first test flight of the prototype in 1941."

Germany in this time and space was also the first country to manufacture jet aircraft. And under the promotion of Hessman, major German aircraft and aircraft engine manufacturers such as Junckers, Folk, Henkel, Henkel, Henschel, Donier, Mercedes-Benz and Siemens have received research and development funds allocated by the military and invested in the research of jet aircraft and turbojet engines. At present, there are several practical solutions that have entered the prototype stage.
