Chapter 395 The United States and the Soviet Union

Seeing Hitler leave, Hesman and Ribbintrov glanced at each other, and Hesman said, "Comrade Stalin should have known our bottom line. But this does not mean that we will seize those lands and hand them over to the Soviet Union. You must seize Turkey, Iran and India yourself. If your offense fails or fails to start action, then we will still consider liberating those areas."

"The people of those areas have been waiting for liberation for a long time, and they should not wait endlessly." Ribbintrop also echoed, "and we firmly believe that the British Empire is at a dead end and they can't hold on for too long."

The concerted concert between Hessman and Ribbentrop, and Hitler's previous anger, were actually performances. The purpose was to prompt Stalin to take action in the Middle East as soon as possible. As for whether Iran or Turkey are suffering, it doesn't matter to Germany, and Germany benefits from it. Because the Soviet scientific socialist system is not favored by reactionaries from all countries, the prospect of being occupied by the Soviet Union is too terrible for reactionaries in Türkiye and the entire Middle East.

If the Soviet Union attacked northeastern Turkey from Georgia and Armenia, Turkey had no choice but to seek help from Germany. Turkey's mountainous terrain determined that the Soviet Union could not fight a blitzkrieg, and Turkey's military strength was not weak. The Soviet Union's offensive could not win quickly, and Germany had time to rush to help.

Of course, rushing to Türkiye to support does not mean breaking with the Soviet Union. After all, after quickly defeating France, Germany's military strength seemed very strong, obviously not something that the Soviet Red Army could defeat, and the Soviet Union would most likely choose to compromise.

If the Soviet Union attacked Turkey's neighbor Iran, then Turkey had to see if Britain stood up to protect Iran. Since Iran and Britain were agreed to by the oil development agreement, this was considered to be a payment of protection fees! If Britain could not protect Iran, then Turkey could only turn to Germany immediately. As soon as Germany entered Turkey, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, and Kuwait, countries ruled by reactionaries, would all rushed to Germany's thighs.

Although Iran is given away, it is not a loss to be able to defeat oil-producing countries such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Moreover, the Soviet Red Army's actions in Finland and Poland seemed very slow (relative to the German army). If the Iranian army resisted slightly more effectively in the north, the German army might even occupy the oil-producing area in southern Iran near Iraq before the Soviet Red Army.

In short, as long as the Soviet Union takes action in the direction of Turkey-Iran in the near future, Germany's chess game in the Middle East and the Mediterranean can be completely revitalized. Even if it cannot win at sea for the time being, it can defeat Britain through rapid advancement on land.

But Molotov, Shaboshnikov and Madame Corente were not stupid either. The "respected Comrade Stalin" behind them was even more intelligent. Of course, he could see through the trap that "Dear Comrade Hitler" had put on the Soviet Union at a glance.

So after receiving the report from Molotov, Stalin immediately gave instructions to let the Soviet delegation contact the United States delegation secretly.

This contact was arranged by Mrs. Corentai, which was on June 26, 1940, at the White Crane Hotel in Geneva. Corentai asked a member of the Soviet Embassy to open a room at the White Crane Hotel. Then three main members of the Soviet delegation arrived quietly at the evening and moved into the room. The Americans went to the restaurant for lunch the next day and met at the Soviet room after dinner.

"President Roosevelt will approve the plan to export 12 p-39 and p-40 fighter jets to the Soviet Union after the election."

After a few greetings between the two sides, Harry Hopkins told the Russians good news in a cheerful tone.

"Oh," Mrs. Curente showed a skeptical look, "After the election? Mr. Hopkins, can you guarantee that the next president of the United States will not overturn President Roosevelt's decision?"

The favorite for the next president is the Republican Dewey, who advocates not interfering in the European war. If Dewey wins the general election in November, he will probably overturn Roosevelt's decision and not export planes to the Soviet Union. He even just announces that the US government will strictly abide by the 1939 Neutrality Act, and World War II will end... end with Germany's victory!

"Madam," Harry Hopkins said with a smile, "What you worry about won't happen. Just yesterday's Republican National Convention, Dewey and Tofta lost to Wilkie."

The speed of information dissemination in this era is not comparable to later generations. The results of the US Republican Convention have not yet been spread to Geneva. But who is Hopkins? He is the trader of the Roosevelt election, so he naturally knew it as soon as possible.

"What?" Curente was stunned, his face suddenly changed, "Does Dewey actually lost?"

"Comrade Corente," Molotov asked her quickly when he saw Corente's surprised expression, "What happened?"

"The public opinion in the United States has changed a lot!" Colente spent several years in the United States and knew the rules of the game in the US election. "Dewey, who advocated not interfering in the European war, lost the Republican primary."

Thomas Dewey is a star in American politics. Before participating in the presidential campaign, he was a special prosecutor who fought against gangs in New York. He ignored his personal safety and sent hundreds of criminal leaders to prison and became a hero in the eyes of the people. In previous polls, Dewey's approval rating (among voters who support Republicans) was as high as 67%, and he was almost certain to win the Republican presidential candidate throne. But he now lost to Wilkie, who switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party, with a previous support rating of only 3%.

There is only one reason for creating this miracle. Dewey advocates not interfering in the European war, while Wilkie strongly advocates supporting Britain!

"It's Wilkie against President Roosevelt now," Hopkins said with a smile, "and nothing unexpected happens."

In Hopkins's view, it is almost suspense whether Roosevelt can be re-elected three times, and even if Roosevelt cannot be elected, Wilkie will definitely continue Roosevelt's route. This is determined by the American public opinion (perhaps manipulated public opinion).

"Then will the United States participate in the war against Germany immediately?" Molotov asked immediately.

His words were immediately translated into English by Corentai. Molotov's culture was not very good and he didn't speak English very well. However, both Corentai and Shaposhnikov could speak very fluent English.

"No." Harry Hopkins replied with a smile, "but the United States' support for Britain and all countries and governments that oppose Nazi Germany will be greatly enhanced... If the Soviet Union is willing to stand with the United States, then the good days of Nazi Germany will soon end."

"The Soviet Union and the United States went against Germany?" Molotov said, "We have all experienced such times, right?"

Hopkins and Hull looked at each other, and Hull said, "The situation was different at that time than now."

"Different?" said Molotov. "What are you talking about? I am studying the difference between 1917 and now? Leave this kind of thing to historians for research."

"Then you mean..."

"You," Molotov pointed out, "Your friend of the UK has a contract that has not been fulfilled! If the UK wants to cooperate with us, then it should perform the previous contract first."

The so-called "contract" is of course not a promise between the Allies and the Bolsheviks, but a blank check written by Britain and France to Russia.

"But that's already a thing of the past," Hopkins looked at Molotov. "Didn't the Geneva Peace Conference deny the Treaty of Versailles and the Treaty of Saint-Germain? Do you Soviet Union have an opposition?"

Molotov did not answer Hopkins' words positively, but said: "In view of Russia's contribution to World War I, we have the right to get Turkey and Iran! This is what Britain owes us, give Turkey and Iran to us, and then there is room for cooperation!"

Mrs. Curente translated Molotov's words into English, but Hopkins was a little confused and asked: "The Chairman of the People's Committee said 'Give it'?"

"Yes!" Mrs. Curente replied with a smile, "It's 'give'. Britain must cooperate with us to seize Istanbul!"

"This is impossible!" Hopkins shook his head desperately, "How is this possible..."

"How is it impossible?" Sha Boshnikov, chief of staff of the Red Army, interjected, "The Turkish government is very pro-British. They will not stop the British Mediterranean fleet from entering the Bosphorus, and they will not be prepared for it. The British can launch a surprise attack and take down nearby forts and airports, and then the Soviet Red Army will fly to liberate Constantinople!"

This is indeed possible... From a military perspective! But the political consequences are serious enough to allow British Prime Minister Churchill to cover up and get out of the way to prevent Russia from seizing Istanbul into the Mediterranean. It is Britain's basic national policy! Moreover, Turkey has also signed a non-aggression treaty with Britain. If the British government openly betrayed Turkey to the Soviet Union by means of military raids, then Churchill's political life will be completely over.

Moreover, the UK will not have another friend in the entire Middle East!

"Mr. Chief of Staff, what you said cannot be done!" Corder Hull knew that it was very difficult to win over the Soviet Union, but he did not expect that the asking price of the Soviet Union would be so high.

Hull pointed out: "If Prime Minister Churchill does what he does, he will be kicked out of office and then someone who is willing to compromise with Germany will come to power!"
