RGM-79gm general mass-produced ms. This machine is the initial ms of the Federal Army developed using the technology obtained by the RX Project. "GM" is the abbreviation of "gundammassproduction" and is a simple production machine of "rx-78 Gundam". In the later period of the war, mass production of this machine began to be produced in large quantities. In order to save costs, the complex core fighter mechanism was removed and the armor was cheaper (the material was inferior).

Due to the need to catch up with the war, the rough simplification makes the performance far different from the "rx-78 Gundam". The 42 aircraft mass-produced in the early stage frequently suffered frequent failures, and the 288 aircraft mass-produced in the later stage improved slightly. The advantage is that it inherits the actual combat data of the rx-78, and even inexperienced drivers can effectively control it. It is equipped with a beam sword, two 60mm Vulcan cannons on the head, a beam pistol, a special shield and a 90mm machine gun.

Due to the relatively low performance, the true value of "Jim" often can only be exerted in group combat with teams or above. Generally, three aircraft are used as one team, and twelve teams are organized into the basic combat team of one squadron. During battle, one squadron and a mixed formation of "Iron Ball" of 10 to 20 teams are often used to fight together. The close combat is handled by "Jim", while the "Iron Ball" is used to support the shelling at a medium and long distance. Although these two weapons are not as good as the enemy, they are both supplemented by quantity.

In the late stage of the war, the more enhanced and improved models derived from this model were successfully developed one after another, becoming the absolute main force of the Federal Army. The "people" sea tactics played by the "Jim" series have repeatedly become the guarantee of the victory of the Federal Army. After the end of the war, the Federal Army further reviewed the machine and corrected a large number of design problems. As the main force of the next generation of MS, the new derivative body was also continuously developed, making this machine finally an important model with a far-reaching impact on mass-produced MS in later generations.
