Chapter 28 Registration for the Competition

After the filming of "No. 32 in Area B" was completed, Xu Zhengdao and his team immediately started working on the post-production work.

Editing is the most important part of the later stage of the movie, and it can even be said to be the secondary creation of film art. The famous Japanese director Akira Kurosawa once said that scripts and editing control the life of a film.

By adjusting the original materials and many artistic elements, the editor can make the film's structure more rigorous, the rhythm is smoother, and the theme is more distinct, thus greatly enhancing the artistic expression and appeal of the film and television films.

However, "No. 32, Area B" is a bit special. It is basically long shots and does not require too high editing. It only takes different shots to be grouped together. Xu Zhengdao and his team moved quickly. They completed the editing of images and sounds in just five days, and cut more than 400 minutes of material into a ninety-minute movie.

Under normal circumstances, after the editing is completed, it is time to add sound effects to the movie and then sound the movie.

"No. 32 in Area B" is a pseudo-documentary, without a soundtrack, and no soundtrack can be added. The original "No. 32 in Area B" did not understand this and added sound effects to the movie. For example, the original male protagonist saw a piece of white cloth on the mirror and red characters under it, so he uncovered the white cloth. The moment he uncovered the white cloth, the sound effects came out, and a "boom". When the audience first watched it, they might be startled. But when they came to their senses, they would curse. Is this a pseudo-documentary? Where did the sound effects come from?

After the editing was completed, Xu Zhengdao and his team skipped the sound effects and soundtrack process and started to produce subtitles for the film. Since "No. 32 in Area B" was to be sent to the film festival to participate, in addition to the opening and ending subtitles, the film must also be equipped with English subtitles. They spent money to hire a teacher from the University of Foreign Studies to translate the character dialogue into English.

After a full week of busyness, the subtitles were finally completed, and the final editing version of "Zone B No. 32" was also completely completed.

After completing the editing, Xu Zhengdao came to the school with the sample and asked the field to see his achievements.

Tian Zhixiao has read the script of "No. 32 in Area B" and also gave Xu Zhengdao some advice. After watching the sample, Tian Zhixiao was very satisfied. Compared with the original script, the story was much more exciting. He felt that the film was very novel from conception to technique, and went deeper step by step in the form of a pseudo-documentary, bringing the sense of thriller into a good state. Seeing the end, even he felt his scalp numb and his spine became cold.

Tian Zhuoxue believes that "No. 32, Area B" is a very excellent horror film. It is definitely a top work in domestic horror films and is also first-class in the world. If it can be released in China, it will definitely be a great success.

Xu Zhengdao also has the same view, after all, horror movies are very marketable in the country.

In 2001, the horror film "The Shining" filmed by director Forrest Gump was so bad that it actually achieved a box office of 15 million. He then filmed "The Haunted House Ghost" and "Close Your Eyes when it's dark". Both of these movies were extremely bad movies, and were criticized by "The Tenth Screening Room", but both achieved great success in the box office.

If "Zone B No. 32" can be released in the country, it will definitely be successful.

Unfortunately, there is a ghost in "Zone B No. 32", so it is impossible to pass the review, so it is naturally impossible to be released in the country.

Xu Zhengdao knew this when preparing for "No. 32 in Area B". He had no hope for being released in China, so he did not feel any regrets. For him, the most important thing was to send the movie to China to participate in the competition. Only when the overseas copyright of the movie was sold can he be able to make a movie.

After leaving the school, Xu Zhengdao called Jiang Tianxing and the others to the Roman Garden to discuss the issue of participating in the film festival.

Jiang Tianxing is a Chinese Canadian, and has a good understanding of the situation abroad. He is also a film producer. Since the film preparations, he has been thinking about which film festival to participate. He told the information he collected: "I checked the film festivals that will be held in the next few months, and there are these suitable ones for us. First of all, the Canadian Fantasy Film Festival, which is in Montreal..."

"Old Ye, isn't that close to your house? Your house is in Montreal."

"It's really close. I've been a volunteer before."

"How is this film festival?"

"This film festival is a relatively new film festival, and it has been established less than ten years ago. I remember it was in 1996, when a group of crazy movie fans around 30 held the first Canadian International Fantasy Film Festival. This film festival is different from other film festivals. Although it is a native film festival in North America, it started with Hong Kong-made gunfighting films, gangster films and horror films. I remember in 1997, Johnnie To brought "The Birth of a Word" to the film festival for a premiere. At that time, I also met Johnnie To. Now it has become a world-wide film festival, but there are still several Hong Kong-made films premiered every year."

"It actually started with Hong Kong films. The Hong Kong films were so awesome in the 1990s."

"Old slut, don't interrupt! Lao Ye, continue talking!"

"After nearly ten years of development, the scope of Canadian fantasy film excerpts has now covered the whole world. The most important genre films of that year and the previous year will basically be screened on the film festival, regardless of length. The awards were not evaluated before, but this year it has started. I think the Canadian fantasy film is quite suitable for us. This film festival itself thinks that gunfight films, gangster films and horror films are the main ones, which are very suitable for us. It started with Hong Kong films and has a sense of closeness to Chinese films.

Next is the Bucheon International Fantasy Film Festival, which is held in Bucheon City, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea every year around July. It was first held in 1997 and mainly screened films with the theme of love, fantasy and adventure. The exhibited works include competing units and non-competing units. This film festival has bonuses and can provide prizes ranging from 3 million to 20 million won for winning films.

The third is the Austin Fantasy Film Festival in the United States. This is a newly born film festival. This year is the first, and it is held in September and is held in Austin, Texas. The film festival lasts for 8 days and the types of films displayed include horror films, science fiction films, fantasy films, action films and Cult films.

The fourth is a relatively large film festival, the Toronto Film Festival. I don’t need to introduce this, and the momentum is almost overwhelming the Venetian Film Festival. The Toronto Film Festival has 14 units, including a panoramic screening unit, a master unit, a contemporary world film unit, and a midnight crazy unit. The most important one is the panoramic screening unit. The units that can be shortlisted for this unit are all movies with very high artistic standards, which can be shortlisted for the three major film festivals and the Oscars. The Midnight Crazy Unit is very suitable for us. This unit aims to discover excellent Cult movies, thriller movies, horror movies from all over the world. Tsui Hark’s "Wong Feihong" series of movies have been screened in this unit.

There are two particularly important film trading markets in North America, one is the AFM in the United States and the other is the Toronto Film Festival. If you can be shortlisted for the Midnight Crazy Unit of the Toronto Film Festival, the overseas copyright will definitely be sold well. However, the Toronto Film Festival is the most important film festival in North America, and the whole world is paying attention to it, and it is very difficult to enter.

There is also the Sitges International Fantasy Film Festival in Spain, which is one of the three major fantasy film festivals in the world. It mainly uses action films, horror films and fantasy films as the selection target. The Sitges Film Festival was first held in 1967 and was held in early October every year. The venue was Sitges, a coastal town in Catalonia. The Sitges Film Festival has a great influence in Europe. If it can be shortlisted, it will be beneficial to copyright sales in Europe."

Speaking of this, Jiang Tianxing paused: "Which film festival do you think you are going to?"

Xu Zhengdao pondered: "Even if the Korean film festival is not there, although there are bonuses, with the virtues of Koreans, even if our movies are the best, we will not give the highest prize to us. The American film festival is only the first this year and has no influence at all. It is probably difficult to sell movies if you go there. I think it is better to consider Toronto and Sitges, especially Toronto, which has a very big impact. If you can be shortlisted, you should be able to sell a lot of money, at least there is no problem in paying back the money."

Others also expressed their opinions: "I think so, we don't expect anything to win awards or something. The most important thing is to sell money. Only by selling money can we make new movies and continue the road to film. I think it's better to go to Toronto."

"I also think it's better to go to Toronto, and the Toronto movie trading market is relatively large."

"Just go to Toronto. If you can't be shortlisted, consider other things."

Xu Zhengdao looked at Jiang Tianxing and asked, "Lao Ye, what about your opinion?"

Jiang Tianxing picked up the pulsating bottle and took a sip, and slowly said: "I think everyone is too optimistic about the overseas market. Most audiences in European and American countries are not interested in Asian movies. For a simple example, the Japanese horror film "Midnight Bell" was very sensational. The Americans remake two movies, and the box office was hugely successful, and the box office in North America was over 100 million. But do you know what the box office of the Japanese version of "Midnight Bell" was in North America? It was zero. It was not released at all. What about it

Even DVDs were not released. It was just that after the box office of the American version of "Midnight Bell", it made an online premiere. Horror movies are not easy to sell overseas, and even if they can be sold, they cannot be sold at a high price. I think "No. 32 in Area B" may be more popular in Asia, and there are many Asian film companies in the Canadian Fantasy Film Festival, and there are many bosses of Asian film companies, so I think I should go to the Canadian Fantasy Film Festival first, and then go to Sitges to try to sell some money in Europe."

Xu Zhengdao felt that Jiang Tianxing's words were simply Han Han and Guo Xiaosi's words were just a matter of rolling in the sheets - incisive. The most important market for Chinese-language films is East Asia and Southeast Asia. Since there are many Asian film manufacturers and film companies in the Canadian Fantasy Film Festival, it is undoubtedly the most suitable to go to the Canadian Fantasy Film Festival. He looked up at Li Chengfeng and the others and asked, "What do you think?"

Everyone nodded slightly: "It makes sense."

Xu Zhengdao slapped on the table: "Then go to Canada!"

After confirming to participate in the Canadian Fantasy Film Festival, Xu Zhengdao asked Li Jie to make a movie poster. When registering for the film festival, a poster must be provided; when the film festival is officially screened, a poster must also be posted for promotion.

Li Jie designed the movie poster without much effort. The poster is divided into two parts: upper and lower parts. In the upper part, in the light blue picture, Mike is facing the camera, his eyes wide, and he is shining with a terrifying light; in the lower part, in the black and white surveillance screen, Gao Yutong is sitting by the bed, looking at the camera lens woodenly.

Everyone thought the poster was good, giving people a gloomy and chilling feeling.

Xu Zhengdao downloaded the registration form on the official website of the Canadian Fantasy Film Festival, filled in the relevant information, and sent it to the Film Festival Organizing Committee together with the DVD disc, posters, and other related information of "Location B".
