The 052d destroyer is the latest generation of missile destroyer of the People's Liberation Army Navy. It is now the latest improved version of the 052c destroyer. It is also another modern air defense destroyer equipped with phased array radar and vertically launched regional air defense missile system after the 052c destroyer. The first 052d destroyer, the Kunming, was launched on August 28, 2012 and officially joined the combat sequence of the People's Liberation Army Navy on March 21, 2014.

Origin of the name

Chinese Aegis

The origin of the name "Aegis" can be traced back to the US "Aegis" phased array radar system. The "Aegis" system is translated as "Aegis" in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Therefore, when China's first modern air defense destroyer equipped with phased array radar and vertically launched regional air defense missile systems entered service, network and military enthusiasts called it "Chinese Aegis" or "Chinese Aegis" destroyer. The 052d destroyer is the latest improved version of the 052c destroyer, so it is called the Chinese Aegis second generation.

In addition, after the 052c destroyer was put into service, the Chinese Navy also built two 051c destroyers, equipped with Russian phased array radar and vertical launch system, so it is known as the "Chinese-Russian Aegis". The Chinese Aegis generally refers to the 052c/d class.

Development of history

On April 29, 2003, the first ship of 052c, Lanzhou (hull number 170), was launched, and on October 18, 2005, it officially joined the South China Sea Fleet to serve. On December 26, 2005, the ship of the same class, Haikou (hull number 171), became the first modern air defense destroyer of the People's Liberation Army Navy equipped with phased array radar and vertically launched regional air defense missile system.

Since the Type 052c destroyers have used more new technologies, after the two Type 052c destroyers were put into service, they did not build the second batch for nearly five years, but tested, digested and absorbed the new technologies. It was not until 2010 that the second batch of Type 052c destroyers were built. This time, four of them were built, and they have now been completed and put into service.

While digesting the technology of the 052c destroyer, China continued to develop the new generation of destroyers and improved the technical shortcomings of the 052c destroyer. At the same time as the second batch of 052c destroyer, it began to build a more advanced 052d destroyer. The first 052d destroyer, the Kunming, was launched on August 28, 2012 and officially joined the Navy combat sequence of the Chinese People's Liberation Army on March 21, 2014. It then started mass production. At present, it is known that 2 ships of the 052d destroyer have been in service, 2 ships of sea type, 4 ships installed, and 2 ships under construction. It is estimated that the first batch of construction is 12 ships. It shows that the ship's technology is fully mature.

Design Improvement

Ship type

The basic ship model and layout of 052d are the same as that of 052c, but the detailed structure and equipment have considerable changes. The tilt angle of the 052d type superstructure is larger, providing better stealth performance; in addition, the angle of inward contraction on both sides of the ship building is larger, so the front of the bridge becomes narrower, and the inclined parts of the phased array are installed on both sides become larger. The contour and configuration of the 052d rear hull body is basically the same as that of 052c, but the structure of the tail ship building has obvious changes. First, the hangar is moved from the left side to the middle position, and a closed small boat cabin similar to 054a is added on both sides; and the rear mast used to carry the 517ha radar Yagi antenna is also moved forward, because a set of vertical launch systems are set up between the rear and the hangar, so the 517ha radar is moved forward and away from the missile fountain.

tonnage

Tonnage has always been a controversial topic of Type 052d destroyers. At the beginning of construction, it was once circulated on the Internet that the displacement of Type 052d destroyers would reach 10,000 tons, because the world's mainstream destroyers and cruisers are basically around 10,000 tons, such as the Russian Glory-class cruiser full-load displacement of 11,200 tons; the US Ticonderoga-class cruiser full-load displacement of 9,600 tons, the Arleigh Burke Class 2 destroyer full-load displacement of 9,300 tons; the Japanese King Kong-class destroyer full-load displacement of 9,400 tons, and the Ato-class destroyer full-load displacement of 10,050 tons; the South Korean Sejong-class destroyer full-load displacement of 11,000 tons.

After the 052d destroyer is officially put into service, the basic ship type and layout are roughly the same as the 052c, so the displacement cannot be too different from the 052c destroyer. According to the data officially released by China, the standard displacement of the 052c destroyer is 5,980 tons and the full load displacement is 6,800 tons. Based on this, the maximum displacement of the 052d destroyer will not exceed 7,500 tons. It should generally be at the same level as the British Type 45 destroyer, the Japanese Akitsuki class destroyer, the French-Italian horizon class, and the German Saxony class.

radar

The 052c destroyer uses the first domestically produced "Sea Heart" 346 active phased array radar, while the 052d destroyer uses the new 346a phased array radar. This new phased array was first exposed on the Bisheng comprehensive test ship in June 2012. The radar shape is closer to a square and has a larger area. It increases the antenna area and can accommodate more t/r units. The transmission power of a single t/r unit is enhanced, which increases the power of the radar, and cancels the arc housing of the 346 phased array air-cooling system, indicating that China has developed a cooperation main

The liquid cooling system of the dynamic phased array system (cooling is implemented inside the antenna) is to adapt to the increase in overall heat generation. Due to the large cooling capacity of the liquid cooling system and the increase in the antenna array, the output power and continuous operation performance of the 346a type phased array should be better than that of the 346 radar. According to general rules, the larger the interface of the phased array radar, the more t/r units, the stronger the 052d radar is now the mass-produced carrier-based radar with the largest transmit power in the world. If it does not lag behind in signal processing, its detection distance will also rank first in the world.

Ship cannon

The 052c destroyer was equipped with an H/pj-87 single-tube 100mm55 caliber naval gun. The 052d destroyer was replaced with an H/pj-38 single-tube 130mm70 caliber naval gun. This is a domestic version developed by China in reference to the Russian AK-130130mm70 caliber naval gun. It was established by the Zhengzhou Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 2005, and the production work was undertaken by the Second Machinery Manufacturing Factory in Inner Mongolia. The 130mm gun body of the original AK-130 uses two-way ammunition supply, while the Chinese version was changed to one-way ammunition supply in order to reduce weight and simplify the structure.

To save weight, the Chinese version of the 130mm naval gun uses a large number of aluminum alloy components without affecting the structural strength. The Chinese version of the 130mm naval gun has a full gun weight of about 50 tons, and the turret with stealth appearance is made of glass fiber. The range is nearly 30 kilometers and the rate of fire is about 40 rounds per minute. In particular, it has the ability to launch rocket extended-range guided shells with a range of over 100 kilometers. This is the first time among the Chinese Navy's surface ships. The appearance of the h/pj-38 single-barrel 130mm 70 caliber naval gun on 052d means that the Chinese Navy will regain the bombardment capability of the naval gun on the other side.

New type of hanging hair

Another major improvement of the 052d destroyer is that it abandons the 052c's wheeled Red Flag 9 missile's special vertical launch device and uses a chocolate grid-shaped universal launch device, similar to the US MK-41 vertical launch device. Four sets of eight-component vertical launch systems are arranged in front of the bridge, while the hangar structure is equipped with another four sets of eight-component vertical launch systems, with 8 launch devices in the ship in total 64 units.

According to the National Military Standard gjb5860-2006 issued by the China National Defense Science and Technology Commission on December 15, 2006, and on May 1, 2007, the first universal design of the "General requirements for the universal vertical launch device of surface ship missiles", the common carrier-based vertical launcher can be compatible with cold-launched HHQ-9 air defense missiles and other cold/heat projectiles. The universal vertical launch device belt

The biggest advantage of this is that it is convenient to mix missiles of various uses and can perform multiple tasks at the same time. Moreover, the area of a single unit of the 052d vertical launch device is larger than that of the US MK-41 vertical launch device, which means it can load missiles with larger diameters, which can make up for the shortcomings of domestic missiles being inferior to that of American products in terms of miniaturization. In addition, the larger area of a single unit will also facilitate the loading of new medium-range ship-to-air missiles in the future in the form of "one pit and four bombs".

Types of missiles

The 052d destroyer is still in the verification stage, so the missiles configured are not determined, but based on the development of China's missile technology in recent years, some can still be inferred.

Air Defense Missile

Haihongqi 9 is currently the most important long-range air defense missile in China. Unless China can develop more advanced long-range air defense missiles, Haihongqi 9 will definitely be the standard configuration of the 052d destroyer;

The main domestic air defense missile is currently the Haihongqi 16. Whether it can be assembled on the 052d destroyer depends on the integration into the "one pit and four bombs" loading. It is not ruled out that new types of bombs will be developed;

Short-range air defense missiles have been determined, and are 24 joint sea red flags and 10

In terms of near-force defense, a 730-type 30mm close-proof gun is still maintained in front of the 052d bridge, forming a front-and-back matching with the Haihongqi 10. This matching mode allows the short-range air defense missile to expand multi-target capabilities while ensuring the last line of defense.

Anti-ship missiles

The anti-ship missile equipped by the Type 052c destroyer is the 2x4 joint tilt Eagle Strike 62 heavy anti-ship missile. This is originally a type of shore-based heavy anti-ship missile with relatively backward technology. The 052d destroyer is abolishing the tilt anti-ship missile launch device and integrating the anti-ship missile into the vertical launch device. Therefore, a new heavy anti-ship missile will definitely be equipped with.

9.3 At the military parade, China showed a new style

Heavy anti-ship missiles are Eagle Strike 12, but this type of missile should be airborne anti-ship missiles and should not be installed. In November 2019, CCTV reported that a new anti-ship missile was launched vertically and destroyed a target ship. It can be seen from CCTV's reports that the Chinese Navy's comprehensive test ship was launched, not an ordinary combat ship. The naval test ship was developed for testing.

A type of ship specially built by the military is the carrier and test platform for new naval weapons. Judging from the sleek appearance of the missile, it is not the familiar series of anti-ship missiles of Eagle Strike-83\Eagle Strike-62\Eagle Strike-12. Therefore, some analysts believe that this vertically launched new anti-ship missile is China's latest generation of ship-based vertically launched Eagle Strike-18 anti-ship missiles, so there is a possibility of configuring this type of missile on the 052d in the future.

Rocket assisted torpedo\anti-submarine missile

In recent years, China has developed very rapidly in rocket-assisted torpedoes\anti-submarine missiles. The Changying series has already appeared in three models, but the official service of the Jiati-type model depends on the integration of the technology of "one pit and four bombs".

cruise missile

At present, China only has a type of ship-based ground-based cruise missile, East China Sea 10, and is still under development. Since China's current demand for ground-based cruise missiles is not urgent, the progress of East China Sea 10 is not fast. On the contrary, the land-based version of the East China Sea 10 Changjian-10 ground-to-ground cruise missile is already in progress.

9.3 The official appearance of the parade was revealed. Moreover, the tonnage of the 052d destroyer is small, and the ground-to-ground cruise missiles are somewhat like a small ship carrying a giant ship. It is estimated that the 052d destroyer will only assemble ground-to-ground cruise missiles for verification\test, but will not be used as formal weapons and equipment. The ground-to-ground cruise missiles should be equipped on the newer generation of China's Type 055 destroyers.

Although Russia used only 1,800 tons of 11,661 frigate to launch cruise missiles when it attacked IS, and only 900 tons of 21,631 light missile ships, this is Russia's helpless move. First, Russia lacks a large surface platform, and second, it is actually launching anti-ship cruise missiles rather than standard ground-to-ground cruise missiles.

Other improvements

Other improvements to 052d include abandoning the Russian "music station" radar, abandoning the Mibo alert radar using Yagi antenna, and installing a birdcage antenna on the rear mast. The purpose is currently unknown and it is likely to be a new anti-stealth radar.

Overall evaluation

The 052d destroyer has made a destroyer with outstanding air defense capabilities based on the displacement of about 7,000 tons, and has a very balanced anti-ship, anti-submarine and land attack capabilities. In addition to the lack of advanced power systems, its comprehensive combat capability is even stronger than the British Type 45 destroyer with a full load displacement of about 7,000 tons, the Japanese Akitsuki-class destroyer, and the French-Italy Horizon-class. Compared with the 10,000-ton destroyer, it is also at the same level in pure technology, and can be regarded as a satisfactory "target ship".

Although the insufficient displacement of 052d leads to a small number of vertical units and insufficient mission elasticity, considering that the Chinese Navy is developing a newer generation of 10,000-ton Type 055 destroyers, the performance of the two shows an appropriate gradient, and when used together, it is the best solution to take into account both performance and economy. At present, the Chinese Navy still has 9 old 051 destroyers in service. If a 1:1 replacement is carried out, it is estimated that 8 more ships of the 052d destroyers will be built, with a total of more than 10 ships. Based on the 052d and 052c fleets, if several 10,000-ton destroyers are added, the future troop scale of the Chinese aircraft carrier battle group will be very considerable.
