Chapter 59 Square Array(1/2)

How many soldiers are needed to form a square formation?

Of course the more, the better.

Because quantity is courage.

In the Battle of the Spurs fifty-seven years ago, the army that supported Richard's succession only formed two square formations, but used 13,000 spear-half soldiers.

The number of people in each square array exceeded 6,000, which was stupid and heavy, and they acted like a turtle crawling, but they still won.

The other side of the battle for the crown, Richard's uncle, Philip, Earl of Northon, held a large number of noble cavalry, but was killed and defeated.

After the war [pretender] Philip was beheaded, and the war of succession to the throne that lasted for two years was declared over.

In that battle, Ned of Tolmes had just passed the nineteenth, but was just an inconspicuous servant. Because his legs trembled when he was in battle, he was ridiculed by his companions. He ran to the river to secretly shed tears.

Emperor Richard was eleven years old and thin, and his mother called him [Little Pea].

At that time, Richard was a child who was still innocent. He just wanted to ride a horse and play every day. No one could tell that he would get the nickname of [Crazy] in the future.

As the biggest contributor to this battle, François of Fort Mill was named Duke of Ally, and was called "butcher" by nobles of all sizes because of his cruel means of not leaving any living habits.

With the indestructible phalanx of guns and halberds, the Butcher Duke rarely lost his battles in the south and north.

The formation of long spears and heavy halberds are not afraid of cavalry impact, which also makes the infantry become the main force of the army again.

While everyone was competing to imitate the Butcher Duke, a few keen soldiers had already noticed the flaws: the phalanx tactics were seriously wasted, and the larger the phalanx, the more serious the waste it was.

Every time after the war, it is found that only soldiers on the outermost layer of the square formation are often seen blood.

As for the people in the square formation... they are just giving courage to the people outside, and they have nothing to do except cheer.

If the outside wins, the people inside rush out to chase and kill the fleeing enemy; if the outside is defeated, the inside can only run away.

When Ned Smith started to improve the square formation tactics thirty years ago, he controlled the number of people in a single square formation to within 3,000. At the same time, the proportion of melee soldiers was compressed, and the musketeers and crossbowmen were replaced.

The new compound phalanx defeated the old phalanx. After this tactical innovation, mathematics became a compulsory course for officers.

Because if you want to arrange a square array, you must know geometry, and you must be able to proficient in oral multiplication and division and square formation.

When mathematics is popularized, another new theory was proposed - "small square formation tactics", that is, when the force is constant, the smaller the single square formation, the more soldiers can be able to catch the enemy.

However, small square formations are not without cost. The smaller the square formation, the easier it is to be broken, and the higher the morale requirements for the army.

At this moment, the Paratu troops who were facing the Heds used a small square formation.

The ambush halfway, leaving the commander with only a few seconds of judgment.

The Brigadier General's deputy, Colonel Laslow, arrived and spoke quickly: "I'll take people to block it! Buy you time!"

"It's too late!" Sekler ordered calmly: "Use small square array! Trumpeter!"

The trumpet, snare drum, flag, spellcaster, and paratu army are all commanded by these four things.

The sharp trumpet pierced the horse's hooves and roared, and the brigades beat the snare drums to echo. The six infantry brigades that were moving in columns quickly changed their formations.

The soldiers threw away their luggage, utensils, tents and other debris, and only took weapons and ammunition.

Amid the rapid drum beats, four melee 100 teams closed under the brigade's flag, forming a solid square array with two left and right elbows and six steps in front and back.

The super spear wrapped around the halberd and the sword and shield hand, the military flag was protected in the center, and the two muskets and 100-man teams were arranged in four corners outside the array.

The irritable sergeant ran between the queues, cursing the dizzy soldiers. When they saw who stood in the wrong position, they kicked it. The square formation quickly took shape.

Just under the noses of the Hed, six Paratu infantry brigades formed a formation with their backs, and the small square arrays lined up from east to west on the river bank.

The enemy cavalry was about to arrive in the blink of an eye, and the Paratu Musketeer's fuse was not lit yet.

Seeing this, Sekler made a quick decision: "Let the brigades take the musketeers in!"

The trumpeter got the order and used his strength to blow another melody.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert, the commander of the Second Battalion of the Sixth Army, couldn't hear clearly for a moment. He closed his eyes and carefully identified it, and suddenly shouted: "Roy! Varga! Take your people into the square formation!"

Two centurions, Lieutenant Roy and Lieutenant Varga, acted immediately.

Under the leadership of the centurion, the musketeer Pingte retreated into the square.

He stopped between the two spearmen, held the flint and the rope tip together, and knocked hard with the scythe.

It is easy to ignite on weekdays, but now it is extremely difficult.

"Cao!" The horse's hooves roared in his ears, and Pingte's hands were shaking violently, so he couldn't beat them. He was so angry that he knocked them and scolded them once: "Cao!Cao!"

"Shut up!" Centurion Roy shouted angrily when he heard the sound: "Those who are facing the enemy's noise will be killed!"

Pingte shivered all over and his lips were closed as if they were stuck. After knocking it more than a dozen times, the coke at the end of the fuse finally stuck to Mars.

Pingte was as if he had found a treasure. He hurriedly closed the rope tip with his hands and blew carefully. The faint sparks became stronger and a few wisps of blue smoke emerged.

The musketeer next to him saw that Pingte had done it, and hurried to borrow the fire.

The Hed cavalry in the front was less than two hundred meters, and the distance was rapidly approaching every second.

The Palathus could already hear the strange screams and calls from the barbarian. The red and white feathers shaking on the barbarian's head were clearly visible.

The 500-man small square formation of Robert's brigade was solemn and silent, with only a scar-faced sergeant walking in the queue, repeating the military law with a stern voice:

"Those who are facing the enemy will be killed!"

"Those who are facing the noise of the enemy will kill you!"

"Those who fire a gun without obtaining the order shall be killed!"

"Those who advance alone will retreat alone will be killed!"

"If there are red marks on the back, behead!"

Next to Lieutenant Colonel Robert, the military policeman holding a short bow and a red arrow showed fierce eyes.

[Note: This is the nomadic military law inherited by the Palatu army. Whenever the war comes, the military police sergeant holds a short bow and is equipped with a cinnabar arrow. If there are noises and chaos, they are afraid to move forward and retreat alone, they will shoot it with red arrows. After the war, those with red marks on their backs will be killed immediately]

The Green Helmet Tassel's messenger ordered the cavalry to rush to the square and shouted: "Lt. Col. Robert! General ordered your troops to find an opportunity to move closer to the river bank!"

Six small square formations are arranged in a shape, and the overall formation is very bad. The Robert square formation is located at the eastern end of the entire line, and the location is the most dangerous.

"How am I moving now?" Robert was furious and shouted back: "Let's talk about it after the first wave!"

The Hud cavalry had less than a hundred steps, and the soldiers patrolling outside the formation also retreated into the square formation.

Facing the terrifying momentum of thousands of cavalry charges with all their might, there is no fear without the Paratus.

From private to sergeant, to centurion and captain, everyone's uncontrollable taste of dry tongue, dilated pupils, accelerated breathing, and even the hands holding weapons were a little sore and soft.

Suddenly, a voice amplified by magic resounded through the wilderness: "I'm in the formation!"

The Paratu people on the battlefield looked in the sound and saw the general's gorgeous helmet.

"If I take a step back!"

"Cut off my head!"

Sekler strode into the square with his halberd.

At this moment, even the timid coward had infinite courage to spurt from the bottom of his heart, and the morale of the Paratu army reached its peak.

"Long live! Long live! Long live!"

The mountain shouts even overwhelmed the sound of rolling hooves.

"Speeder!" Lieutenant Colonel Robert shouted at the top of his lungs: "Hold the gun!"

"Long live!" The first row of soldiers pressed their spears to the ground.

"Long live!" The second row of soldiers stood flat spears.

"Long live!" The third row of soldiers raised their spears.

The three rows of spears pointed forward at the same time, and the tip of the spear was shining with a cold light.

The Paratu square formation, the Hud cavalry roared and collided.

Musketeer Pinte is not a coward, but when the Hurd cavalry rushed to him, he subconsciously closed his eyes.

Opening his eyes again, Pinte found himself safe and sound.

The Hudd barbarian did not crash into it. The enemy pulled the reins at the last moment and brushed the spear tip and passed by the formation.

Hundreds of Hed cavalry rushed towards the formation, like huge waves.

But there were only a few horses who did not hide or avoid and crashed into the spear forest. The other barbarians either avoided at the last moment, or the war horses stood up uncontrollably in front of the spear tip - even if the person was not afraid of death, the horse would be afraid.

Just beside Pinte, a Hudder man who was not afraid of death rushed into the square on a Hudder horse who was not afraid of death.

The Palattu people were knocked over and overturned. The spearmen who were facing the impact instantly broke their mouths and were knocked head-on by the war horses, and they didn't know how to live or die.

Hedma's chest was penetrated by the tip of the gun, and he broke two other spears one after another before falling to the ground.

The Hud rider flew up from the saddle and fell heavily into the square, and the Palatus people next to him avoided him.

Centurion Lieutenant Roy drew his sword and rushed towards Hed rider, stepped on the opponent's chest, and defeated the Hed man with one sword.

The previous Hudder broke through the gap with his life, and immediately several fierce barbarians followed and broke into the formation.

"Ukhaha!" The barbarian roared in the unintelligible Hedian language, waving a scimitar to slash and slashing wildly. They rode on the horse and took away a large piece of flesh and blood with each slash.
