Chapter 43 Encounter(1/2)

On the day after crossing the Styx River, the baggage team camped at the bridgehead.

Late at night, the panicked night commuter sentry broke into the tent of Lieutenant Montane: "Sir! Wake up!"

The second lieutenant was confused: "Why...what?"

"What a big deal!"

Without any sleepiness, Winters jumped off the camp bed: "What's wrong?"

"Salt is coming from the sky!"

Without even having to wear clothes, Winters rushed out of the tent.

Looking around, he didn't see the salt, but there was a more amazing scene - thousands of catkins were falling from the sky in a swirling manner.

It is rare to snow in this land.

...

Two days later.

West of the Kurvalaya River, an unnamed place.

Andre and Winters rode side by side, chatting in unison. The horse's hooves trampled on the mud and water, making a "click-click" sound.

Snow has two forms of existence for the Palathus: the records on paper and the ten thousand years of snow on the main peak of the Jinding Mountains.

There is very little snow that can be touched.

The young Dusak has never even experienced snowfall, and their concept of "snow" comes entirely from the description of their parents.

The surface temperature has not reached freezing point, and the snow falling to the ground quickly melts into water, but there is still snow on the distant hillside.

The meadow in front of me was still green, and the hillside in the sky was covered with snow. This strange scenery could not be felt real even if you saw it with your own eyes.

But the people in the baggage team didn't care about enjoying the beautiful scenery, and they had more headaches.

The meadows in winter were originally quite solid, but the sudden snowfall made them absorb water.

Once crushed by the wheel, it will inevitably turn into mud.

The cart left muddy trails, and mud poured into the wheel axle made it more difficult for the wheel to rotate. From time to time, the carts were trapped in mud puddles.

The ruts in the front car originally made it easier for the rear car to travel, but now the car in the front car is relatively easy, and the more you go, the harder it is to drive.

After a day of trekking, Lieutenant Colonel Jieska ordered the change of the double-column formation to shorten the queue the next day.

However, the double column does not seem to be effective, and Winters estimates that he may try the third column or even the fourth column next.

"This is his mother's bad place!" Andre cursed: "Had people traveled all the way to such places. Has the people above fed their heads in their minds?"

Often, only when something is missing is known to be valuable. Compared with the road network, Venetta, the grasslands of the Hed tribes are indeed ruined.

The road is difficult to walk on - there is no road at all, and it is sparsely populated. Apart from grass and trees, it does not look like it has any output.

The monk Reed on the carriage laughed: "You Venetta people are full men and don't know that hungry men are hungry. Even if the wasteland is used to herd sheep, it will produce. You think this place is not very good, but you don't know that every year the Hed tribes have to fight for the pasture."

"That's because of the jingle of the Heds." Andre immediately retorted: "The Palatus is not poorer than the Heds, right?"

"Red apples are easy to pick." The old monk said a Fleman proverb and asked back, "Is there no one picking the green apples? Paratu is so eager for the land, and you Venetta are also responsible."

"What responsibility?" Andrey was very dissatisfied.

"The wool textile industry in Frusland and Venetta needs more raw materials, and Paratu needs more flocks. The second son, the youngest son and the illegitimate son of your two countries bring money to purchase land, and Paratu has a large number of manors and owners. Don't you understand?"

Andre was a little confused: "What's the matter?"

"After all, it is the demand of your coastal areas that drives the Paratus to step into here." The monks of begging sighed, with a sense of pity in their eyes: "If Venetta's textile industry one day does not have wool and turns to produce cotton cloth, then the Paratus will slaughter the sheep and use the land to grow cotton. Do you understand?"

"Do we... don't want cotton now?" Andre asked timidly.

"This kid is stupider than you!" the old monk pointed at Andre and said to Winters.

"Stop involving me!" Winters countered: "Winetta has responsibility, but you are not responsible? Do you dare to say that the war between the Palatus and the Heds has no religious reasons? Isn't it a siege of pagans?"

The old monk laughed in silence.

A rider ran from the rear of the convoy and ran to the two officers before pulling the reins.

It was Pierre, who reported nervously to Andre: "Sir! I saw a figure on the north hillside."

"Shadow? How many people?"

"Just one."

"And what? Are we attached?"

"No, I passed by in a flash. I couldn't see the man back behind the hillside."

Andrei thought for a while, frowned and asked, "Isn't it the one who herded the sheep again?"

...

There have been jokes about the shepherd before.

As soon as the first day entering the buffer zone, militia discovered that there seemed to be someone following the slopes on both sides.

Andre, who was tense in his heart, thought it was the scout of the Hed, and immediately led his cavalry to kill him.

The cavalry waved their sabers and screamed, and charged forward all the way to the other side, only to find that they were just a few shepherds.

The Hudders didn't catch them, but they scared the sheep to death, which made Andrey very angry.

After that, when I marched in the buffer zone, I encountered several groups of shepherds every day.

Andre, who had been deceived by a fake alarm several times, was no longer too lazy to deal with such reports. Lieutenant Colonel Jeska tirelessly sent Andre to contact the shepherd.

"Lt. Cellini!" Lieutenant Colonel likes to say this: "Come and take a look! Bring something over!"

On the one hand, the lieutenant colonel's purpose was to inquire about information - but Andre felt that it was purely lies. In his opinion, the lieutenant colonel's real purpose was to make mutton, goat's milk and goat cheese.

The Palatu shepherds mainly grazed the famous Merino sheep, which is known for its soft and lubricating wool. Even Winters and Andre and others have heard of it.

Merino sheep are considered to be controlled by Paratu. Since ancient times, sheep seeds are strictly prohibited from flowing out, and those who violate the disease will not be merciless.

There is another type of Jora sheep that is not as famous as Merino, but its meat and milk are far better than cousins.

Shepherds wander in the wild all year round and live a depressed life. So they are happy to exchange sheep and milk for consumables such as tobacco, sugar and wine.

The lieutenant colonel called Andre to go over, just to let him change his meat and milk.

Every day, there was fresh meat and fresh milk, and everyone in the officer class was very happy. Except for Andre, he was so annoyed that he was upset. The lieutenant colonel asked him to go, and no one else could do it for him.

[Note: The officer rank includes officers, priests and professional doctors, and the brigade will not be assigned to professional doctors]

...

Hearing the question from Lieutenant Cellini, Pierre scratched the back of his head and said, "I don't know if it's a shepherd, but that man waved to me."

"Didn't see the outfit clearly?"

"It's too far to see clearly."

"Take the tentman with you to see it." Andre ordered: "Take the gun over there, but don't make jokes like yesterday."

Yesterday, on the first day of crossing the "Styx River", Andre once again received a report: There was someone on the edge.

After crossing the Styx, it was the Heds' sphere of influence. This would not be wrong, right? Andre pointed all his men and rushed over with murderous intent.

But he was fooled again, and he was still a shepherd, and he came by the pontoon bridge a few days ago.

Wherever the flag of Paratu went, the shepherds went. There was the necessary rock salt for sheep on the west bank of the Styx, and after the army crossed the river, the shepherds followed.

According to the shepherd, the nearby Heds had moved west long ago, and the war had recently been around a hundred kilometers west.

In order to avoid the Palatu soldiers, all the Herds, tents, cattle and sheep were moved away. Now only the Palatu shepherds wandered on this land.

Pierre received the order, saluted and prepared to leave.

"Wait." Andre called him, hesitated for a moment, and said, "I'd better take someone there, you can come to the back to report to the lieutenant colonel."

Pierre saluted, pulled the reins, and ran away with a squeezing the ribs.

Winters pulled the roulette from the gun bag and threw it to Andre: "Bring this."

In order not to expose the identity of the spell caster, in addition to rarely using spells publicly, Winters also specially purchased a double-tube spring-wheeled short gun in Maple Stone City.

He felt that even if there were rumors that he could fire a gun without open flame, he would only think it was a reed gun.

"No need." Andrey smiled and waved his hand: "A few sheep-herding people, it's a burden to bring this Shen guy."

...

Andre pointed a tent of riders and ran towards the north hillside.

He was reluctant to call these Dusaks a cavalry because in his opinion these men were just able to ride horses and could not be called qualified cavalry.

The leader of the team is named Asta, a 34-year-old "old" Dusak. Compared with those underage Dusak, the people of Heishui Town are unlucky guys who were selected by lottery.

The remaining Sego, Kruci, Marengot, Rasov and Karp in the same tent are all Dusak.

Andrei thought Asta was older and more reliable, so he appointed Asta as the chief clerk.
