Chapter 138: Yan Da in change

In front of the gate of Yenching University, senior executives such as Xu Guangqi, Song Yingxing, and Sun Yuanhua are leading all teachers and students in the school to welcome the emperor's visit.

Since Zhu Youjian changed the Imperial College Beijing to Yenching University, the organizational structure of Yenching University has undergone tremendous changes.

The original Beijing Imperial College had one priest who was from the third rank; two ranks of the Siye who were from the fourth rank; one rank of the supervisor who was from the sixth rank; one rank of the master who was from the seventh rank.

The teachers in charge of lectures, like officials, all have grades, and are divided into doctoral, assistant teaching, and direct lectures. According to the literal meaning, doctoral should be greater than assistant teaching, and assistant teaching is greater than direct lectures. But in fact, it is not. The grade of the Imperial College teachers depends on which subject the teacher is divided into.

The Imperial College has seven major subjects: Imperial College, Taixue, Guangwenguan, Simenguan, Law, Calligraphy, and Mathematics. Among them, the Chinese sub-disciplines mainly teach the contents of the imperial examinations, which is related to the students' future for the scientific examinations. Therefore, the Imperial College subject is the highest grade, with a doctorate in the fifth grade, a teaching assistant in the sixth grade, and even a direct lecture in the seventh grade.

As for doctoral students and assistant teachers in other disciplines, the grades are much lower. For example, the least valued mathematics, doctoral students are only from the ninth grade, and assistant teachers do not even have grades.

After changing its name to Yenching University, all the leadership names of Yenching University were changed. Jijiu was changed to the president, Siye was changed to the vice president, Jiancheng was changed to the chief secretary, and Zhubo was the director of the library.

According to the university teacher title proposed by Zhu Youjian, teachers are divided into four levels: teaching assistant, lecturer, associate professor, and professor, replacing doctoral, assistant professor and direct lecturer in the Imperial College.

If the name changes, the grade will naturally change. According to the teacher's title, the professor will be at the fifth grade, the associate professor will be at the sixth grade, the lecturer will be at the seventh grade, and the assistant teacher will be at the eighth grade. The teacher's title will not be distinguished due to different subjects.

This change is naturally a great thing for teachers in disciplines such as law, calligraphy, and mathematics that are not valued. Originally, doctoral students of only seven, eight or nine ranks, assistant professors, and associate professors who are promoted to fifth and sixth ranks, are naturally overjoyed.

But the original doctoral and assistant teachers of Imperial College were full of opposition. Seeing people who were originally much lower in grades than them, they were on par with them by taking advantage of their professional title reform, and even climbed over them, they were imaginable.

However, Xu Guangqi, with the support of the emperor, ignored all opposition and forcibly implemented the university reform.

Xu Guangqi only prepared two paths for those diehards who fiercely opposed them. One was to accept the school's arrangements honestly; the other was to leave Yenching University and seek another job.

Most of the officials who stayed in the Imperial College have little political demands and just wanted to stay in the Imperial College for death. Therefore, when they faced the two ways out given by Xu Guangqi, most of them chose the first one and continued to teach at Yenching University.

As for a small number of officials who had experienced in the Imperial College and still had great ambitions for their careers, they went to the Ministry of Personnel to seek other positions.

Such a huge change in Yenching University will naturally not have no impact on students. Since the Imperial College was renamed Yanjing University, the academic atmosphere of focusing on the Four Books and Five Classics and neglecting practice has undergone a great change. Students who like law, calligraphy and mathematics have ushered in spring.

But for those students who only want to get fame and fortune, it is a serious regression. Many students from the Imperial College directly chose to drop out of school in order to resist the reform of Yenching University.

After a series of turmoil, the Imperial College, which originally had more than 3,000 students, now only two thousand people are left, and more than one-third have left.

Zhu Youjian also heard about the large loss of students from Yenching University, but he was indifferent and did not take it seriously at all.

These students are just corrupt scholars who have been stupid in reading the Four Books and Five Classics. There is nothing to say about them. It’s better to leave, and they can free up more student quotas to recruit students.

For example, Niu Jinxing, Li Yan and others who shined in the late Ming Dynasty. They were originally juren during the Tianqi period, but later they became the thief Li Zicheng and became the main support for the destruction of the Ming Dynasty. This was undoubtedly a major failure in the Ming Dynasty's talent selection system.

As a time traveler, Zhu Youjian naturally would not turn a blind eye to such a talent. He had sent someone to investigate the situation of Niu Jinxing and Li Yan, intending to be arbitrary and order them to study at Yenching University.

In addition, there were Xia Yunyi, Du Zheng, Zhou Lixun, Xu Fuyuan, Peng Bin, Chen Zilong and others from several societies who also entered Zhu Youjian's sight. Zhu Youjian was preparing to recruit all of these people to study at Yanjing University to reserve reserve talents for future reforms.

Jishe was one of the famous cultural clubs in the late Ming Dynasty. They were briefly incorporated into Fushe, but later they parted ways due to disagreement of political ideas. In Zhu Youjian's view, Jishe could strive to make use of them.

Zhu Youjian believed that through his own influence, he could win over a group of brainless fans who were loyal to him in Yenching University, imitating Chang Kaishen’s “Blue Clothing Society” to form a youth society, as the main force for the party’s mutual attacks on differences in the future.

If a youth society similar to the "Blue Clothing Society" is really established, then Niu Jinxing, Li Yan, Xia Yunyi, Chen Zilong and others can serve as the leaders of the youth society, and it depends on who can stand out at Yenching University.

...

When he learned that there was a huge force in the capital that was targeting him, Zhu You found out that the palace naturally took sufficient defense measures. Surrounded by the imperial guards, the imperial guard stopped in front of the gate of Yanjing University. Xu Guangqi led more than 2,000 teachers and students to kneel down with a "swish" sound, shouting long live the mountain.

The teachers and students who were originally very dissatisfied with the change of Imperial College to Yenching University were able to witness Tianyan for the first time in their lives. All their dissatisfaction disappeared, leaving only excitement and tremor.

In particular, the emperor easily helped some old professors with white hair and beards up, and had a cordial conversation with him, asking about his well-being. The teachers and students' support for the emperor reached its climax in an instant.

It should be known that today is different from the past. The Imperial College has long declined, and the successive emperors have not visited the Imperial College for at least decades.

In the early Ming Dynasty, due to the initial determination of the world, there were very few scholars. It was Taizu and Chengzu, the two emperors, both had high hopes for the Imperial College. At that time, the Imperial College in Nanjing became a cultural center in Asia, gathering a large number of international students from afar from Korea, Japan, and Nanyang, with as many as tens of thousands of students.

However, as the imperial examination system of the court gradually got on the right track, the bureaucratic system began to turn to the imperial examination system, and the Imperial College gradually lost its original special status, resulting in a situation where the imperial examination day was heavy and the imperial examination day was light.

Now that the emperor’s visit to Yenching University is tantamount to sending a signal to the outside world, that is, the emperor attaches great importance to Yenching University, which naturally boosts the morale of teachers and students in the school and is less repulsive to Yenching University.
