Chapter 471 Wei Zhongxian (1)

However, although Emperor Tianqi ascended the throne early, there was still another problem that was not solved. Li Xuanshi dominated the Ganqing Palace and refused to move away. The Ganqing Palace was the emperor's exclusive bedroom. Emperor Taichang's body was still in the Ganqing Palace. Emperor Tianqi had to go back to the Ganqing Palace, so Li Xuanshi had to move out of the Ganqing Palace to avoid the situation of Emperor Tianqi being controlled by Li Xuanshi again and using the emperor to instruct the ministers.

But it is obvious that Li Xuanshi must be unwilling to move out of the Ganqing Palace, and it is not easy to use force against her, because Li Xuanshi is the woman of Emperor Taichang after all, so it cannot be too ugly. Moreover, there are forces among the court officials who support Li Xuanshi. After all, Emperor Tianqi is still young. If he can control Emperor Tianqi through Li Xuanshi, the political reward will be very great!

The power of court officials who supported Li Xuanshi also had a very strong reason, because Emperor Taichang appointed Li Xuanshi to take care of Zhu Youxiao during his lifetime, and asked Zhu Youxiao to treat Li Xuanshi like his biological mother. Forcing Li Xuanshi to move out of the Ganqing Palace was disrespectful to the dead Taichang Emperor. This kind of remark was still very popular in the Ming Dynasty, which emphasized loyalty and filial piety.

So the court officials argued and did not come up with a good idea. In the end, Guo Zhiyuan stood up and said, "Don't argue, leave this matter to me. I promise to let Li Xuanshi take the initiative to move out of the Ganqing Palace!"

The ministers looked at Guo Zhiyuan in amazement. I don’t know where he got such confidence. Yang Lian said directly that it is impossible. Don’t do anything randomly. You can’t bear to take responsibility for the destruction of our plan. Guo Zhiyuan wants such an effect. He looked at Yang Lian with a smile and said, “Sir Yang, why don’t we make a bet, if I can’t do it, I will let you deal with it, but what if I do it?…”

Yang Lian's character is the least exciting, and he immediately said: "If you do it, I will let you deal with it!"

Guo Zhiyuan shook his head and said, "Mr. Yang and I have no grudges. Why do you do this? If I do it, just call me a teacher. When I see me in the future..."

Yang Lian hesitated now. The Ming Dynasty attached great importance to the status of teachers and students. He asked him to call Guo Zhiyuan much younger than him and had a bad reputation as a teacher, which was even more uncomfortable than killing him!

Guo Zhiyuan continued to provoke and said: "What? Lord Yang is not afraid of death, are you still afraid of calling me a teacher?"

The stubborn Yang Lian was indeed fooled and gritted his teeth and said, "Okay! Just one word is a matter of determination..."

Guo Zhiyuan laughed and left, leaving the stunned ministers looking at each other, and the bet between Guo Zhiyuan and Yang Lian also aroused great interest from the ministers, and they all started talking, but they almost opened the bet directly to see which one could win.

Why did Guo Zhiyuan be so confident that he could make Li Xuanshi move out of the Ganqing Palace? On the one hand, it was because he had the advantage of time travel, and knew that Li Xuanshi would definitely move out of the Ganqing Palace in the end, and more importantly, he thought of a key figure - Wei Zhongxian!

Having written this, I think it is necessary to talk about Wei Zhongxian, because the historical figures in history books are stereotyped. Only by fully understanding historical figures can we understand the truth of history more accurately.

I remember when I was in junior high school, there was a story about "Advance to Level 3" in the Chinese textbook, which was about a stupid son of a landlord named Zhang Haogu. He was ignorant and could not even write his own name. After listening to the fortune teller's trick, he said that he could be a high-ranking official and went home to take the exam immediately. Because he could not enter the capital by mistake, he happened to meet Wei Zhongxian's car driver. Zhang Haogu was a fool and did not know Wei Zhongxian, so he directly confronted Wei Zhongxian. When Wei Zhongxian saw this Zhang Haogu's so big, he said that he would win three yuan. Not only did he not get angry, he also asked his entourage to take his post and send Zhang Haogu into the examination room. As a result, the examiner saw that Zhang Haogu was sent by Wei Zhongxian. People thought it was Wei Zhongxian's relative. In order to curry favor with Wei Zhongxian, Zhang Haogu, who was not very good at writing, won the second place and even let Zhang Haogu enter the Hanlin Academy. Zhang Haogu had been accusing of the Hanlin Academy for a year and happened to meet Wei Zhongxian's birthday. Zhang Haogu's colleagues saw that Zhang Haogu was illiterate and deliberately wrote a couplet scolding Wei Zhongxian for Zhang Haogu as a birthday gift. Wei Zhongxian was too busy and he didn't even look at it. Later, Wei Zhongxian fell. Originally, Zhang Haogu was also regarded as Wei Zhongxian's party clerk, but some ministers remembered Zhang Haogu's couplet that scolded Wei Zhongxian and said that he was not Wei Zhongxian's person, but a loyal minister. As a result, Zhang Haogu was not only fine, but also promoted three levels in a row!

This story is of course a satirizing Wei Zhongxian and the Ming Dynasty court at that time. Combined with the introduction of Wei Zhongxian in history textbooks, my impression of Wei Zhongxian at that time was a cruel and cruel villain! However, as I grew older and experienced, I had a new interpretation and thinking about this story. Although this story is a satirizing Wei Zhongxian, from another perspective, it also shows that Wei Zhongxian attaches great importance to exploring talents, and is not completely useless as written in the history textbook.

So I began to collect historical materials and see what kind of person Wei Zhongxian was in history. In recent years, I have also seen many articles on the Internet that whitewashed Wei Zhongxian, saying that Wei Zhongxian was a hero of the Ming Dynasty. Some even said that if Emperor Chongzhen did not kill Wei Zhongxian, the Ming Dynasty might not have perished.

According to historical records, Chongzhen was indeed regretful about the killing of Wei Zhongxian before his death, and ordered the collection of Wei Zhongxian's remains and buried in Biyun Temple in Xiangshan. According to Feng Menglong's "Diary of Yandu", when Li Zicheng's peasant army arrived outside Beijing, Emperor Chongzhen was surrounded by enemies and was helpless, asking for advice on the eunuch Cao Huachun around him. Cao Huachun reported: If Zhongxian is here, current affairs will not come to this point. The emperor felt sorry for him and ordered the collection of Zhongxian's bones.

So what kind of person was Wei Zhongxian? What kind of merits and demerits did he have to the Ming Dynasty? To truly understand a person, we must first understand his personality and life trajectory. Wei Zhongxian was born in a poor peasant family in Suining, Hebei. His parents didn't even name him. People called him Wei Si according to the ranking. He was not a good job and was addicted to gambling. He was a local rogue. During a gambling, he lost his meager property and owed a lot of gambling debts. Wei Si, who was forced to go to the dead end, made a decision to change his life: go to the palace to be a eunuch!

However, it was not easy to enter the palace and become a eunuch at that time. In the Ming Dynasty, when medical conditions were backward, purifying one's body was a gambling life, and if you were purifying yourself, you might not be able to enter the palace and become a eunuch. It depends on luck. However, Wei Si made up his mind to be a eunuch and persuaded his family to sell a donkey and make up enough money for purging himself. He was lucky. After several hardships, he finally entered the palace and became a eunuch as he wished!
