Chapter 61, Hungary

The Vienna government successively suppressed the Prague rebellion and the Galician rebellion. After the news reached Hungary, the opposition led by Kosut could no longer sit still.

Judging from the current situation, the Vienna government has no intention of compromising the revolutionaries at all. In addition to suppression, it is also suppression, especially the bloody suppression that occurred in Galicia, which made many people even more frightened.

Ludwig von Benedek, who was responsible for suppressing the rebellion in Galicia, directly allowed the local people to retaliate against the nobles and capitalists. Most of the more than 20,000 people died were beaten to death by the people.

It is impossible for the Vienna government to execute more than 20,000 people at one time, and Franz is also shameless. For the long-term stability of Austria Poland, killing people with a knife became the only choice.

A group of militias were summoned from the local area and used their conflicts with the exploiting group to clean up these powerful reactionaries.

Looking around the country, except for the war in Italy, almost all the rebellions were suppressed by blood, and Hungary was about to fight alone.

If the time is taken forward by a month, the Hungarian cabinet government has not been established, and the two sides still have the possibility of compromise. Even before the April 14 Declaration of Independence is issued, there is still a chance to look back.

The Vienna government has never recognized the legitimacy of the Hungarian cabinet and ordered them to dissolve the illegal government in a few words.

Kosut has always advocated leaving Austria and establishing an independent Hungarian republic, but unfortunately this idea has a limited market in Hungary.

Most of the nobles were worried about security issues after independence. After all, Hungary was incorporated into Austria. In addition to the marriage of the Habsburg family, they also needed Austria's protection.

Compared with the Mao Bear and Ottoman, they are more willing to follow Austria. However, in recent years, the central government of Vienna has been weak and gradually lost its majesty. Through a series of temptations, they found that the crying children had milk to eat.

In order to get rid of Austrian restrictions and gain greater benefits, capitalists accepted nationalism from France, and the Austrian opposition led by Kosut began to grow.

But this does not mean that Hungary has the strength to get rid of Austria's independence, and many people are still skeptical of the military revolution.

A young man said hurriedly: "Mr. Kosut, something is wrong. The Vienna government sent a legal propagandist to Hungary, probably for us!"

Upon hearing this news, Kosut's face changed drastically. What is the purpose of Austria sending legal propagandists here? Is it just to promote the law to the Hungarians?

If Franz was here, he would say-yes, the purpose of sending legal preachers is really just to promote the law.

Of course, it is necessary to announce the illegal establishment of the Hungarian cabinet, but this can only be regarded as a by-the-stop, and the most important thing is to differentiate the Hungarian Kingdom.

Different classes have different interests and needs. A series of laws issued by the Vienna government are essentially aimed at bribing ordinary people.

There is no way, it’s not that Franz doesn’t want to bribe the elite, it’s easier to bribe a few than to bribe the majority. The problem is that they ask for a price that is too high and they can’t afford it at all.

In March, the Hungarian delegation represented by Kosut proposed to the Vienna government to establish an independent Hungarian government and abolish the feudal system.

The two sides held a difficult round of negotiations, and Franz was still very open-minded and did not reject reforms. He even advocated that reforms would be more thorough.

However, when we met a group of spokespersons of the idealist bourgeois interest groups, the two sides obviously couldn't reach an agreement.

If the Vienna government dares to accept their conditions, it will be the Austrians' turn to make a revolution.

Equality does not mean privilege. Franz can give equal status to all ethnic groups, but he will never allow the Hungarian nation to be above all ethnic groups.

This involves the national conditions of the Hungarian Kingdom. There is a population of more than 13 million in the country, including more than 500,000 nobles, which can be said to be aristocrats flying all over the sky.

Hungarian capitalists have another identity - aristocrats, so the relationship between Hungarian capitalists and aristocrats is very complicated. Less than two percent of the population accounts for more than 95% of the society's wealth.

The Hungarian nation of this period actually refers to the more than 500,000 nobles and capitalists. These people have many privileges and are the real exploiting class of this country.

To a certain extent, Austria is not a truly authoritarian empire, but an alliance of great nobles. The central government's control over the local area is achieved by the will of the nobles.

The Hungarian nationalist movement that is now erupting is actually the main force of small and medium-sized aristocrats and capitalists. They combine the concept of the country with their own interests and put a halo of nationalism when competing for interests.

This is also the reason why the Hungarian government led by Kosut, who shouted for reform while refusing to implement the Vienna government reform bill.

Even the abolition of serfdom that everyone reached a consensus was not implemented in Hungary, and the nobles concealed the abolition of the Vienna government's abolition bill.

Well, this responsibility cannot be counted on Kosut. After all, his leader is just like the artillery party, and is just a product of everyone's compromise, not a person who gains power by virtue of his strength.

This can be seen from the Hungarian election on April 12, 1848. Although it is said that it will open up the national election, in fact, the Hungarian presidential election is still only in Budapest.

Only 16,200 people in Budapest had the right to vote. According to the understanding of the "Hungarian nation" at that time, it could almost be regarded as a universal suffrage system for the whole city.

The final result was that a total of 5,176 votes were received, and Kosut was elected with a high vote of 1,639 votes. Of course, the results announced to the public are definitely not this number.

Judging from these numbers, Franz's butterfly effect still plays a role, and there are more people who choose to watch the cold eyes than in history.

"Nagi, send someone to deport them immediately. We, Hungary, do not welcome them!" Kosut said with a gloomy face.

As a compromised president, there are too many people in the Kingdom of Hungary who don’t buy his account. In the minds of many people, the Hungarian Republic is a joke, and you can tell from everyone’s indifference to elections.

Kosut's anger was not without reason. The Hungarian Republic was established, but Ferdinand I still served as the Kingdom of Hungary.

There would be no nobles without a king. For his own interests, the Hungarian aristocrats insisted on opposing the abolition of the king. Due to the situation, Kosut was forced to compromise. Now there is a king above him, which is greatly reduced in power.
