Chapter 90 The War in San Francisco

At the train station in San Francisco, a steam locomotive that arrived from the east entered the station, and South Carolina militia with muskets came down from the carriage and savagely occupied the place. They inserted the Southern Cross flag of the Union at the top of the railway station building.

"We are the army of the Union State of South Carolina. Now the San Francisco Railway Station has been occupied by us! The Pacific Railroad is a company funded by our states such as Virginia, South Carolina, and the Pacific Railroad is the asset of our Union State!"

This group of South Carolina soldiers occupied this railway supply line by force that was related to the survival of the Union.

The southern states had long conspired to rebel. They invested in the establishment of the Pacific Railway Company and hired engineers from the Ming Dynasty to build the Pacific Railway, in order to still be able to obtain assistance from the Ming Empire through railways when the ocean was blocked.

This railway was built by them, and it seemed reasonable that they sent troops to protect the railway.

However, California is a free state that is loyal to the United States.

The South Carolina militia forcibly occupying the California railway station caused dissatisfaction from the governor of California. He urgently summoned California militia and police officers to San Francisco to surround the railway station, and the two sides confronted each other across the street.

"Governor, we have only had more than 700 militias to assemble, and several majors are on their way to San Francisco with their militias."

The person in charge of the temporary command of the California militia was an army major, and his troops were in short supply.

As a western state, California has a small population, and many of them are immigrants from all over the world who come to make gold. They have lived here for only a few years to more than a decade. Their loyalty to the United States is not as high as their original country, and they are unwilling to serve in the military for the American Civil War.

The Civil War was mainly concentrated in the Eastern Front represented by Virginia and the Western Front represented by the Mississippi River, and had little to do with California.

California is still in peace, and no one expected that the Union countries would send soldiers to take thousands of kilometers in steam locomotives to occupy San Francisco.

"How many South Carolina militia are there?" The governor of California wiped his sweaty forehead with his handkerchief. This was the biggest crisis he encountered during his tenure. California, which is loyal to the United States, actually poured into the Union's army.

The major replied: "They seem to have less than 300 people, and maybe we can force them to surrender and regain control of the railway."

The governor is still nervous: "Are you confident to win?"

The major encouraged the governor to use force: "We found four artillery pieces. If they were unwilling to surrender, we would use artillery to bombard the railway station. The rails and locomotives could be rebuilt. If we let the rebels occupy the railway station, maybe the entire San Francisco would fall."

The governor looked nervously at the Union flag roaring above the railway station building and gritted his teeth: "Okay, I authorize you to shell the railway station, and all losses caused will be compensated by the California finances in the future."

"I will definitely take back the train station!"

More than 700 California militiamen began deploying fences and artillery positions in downtown San Francisco.

Before the war began, a San Francisco police officer shouted to the South Carolina soldier who occupied the railway station: "South Carolina has betrayed the United States, and California is still the territory of the United States. Please leave here immediately. Otherwise, we will shell you!"

Responding to him was the sound of muskets, letting him know that negotiations were meaningless.

A fierce battle began in San Francisco, cannons were brought to the streets, and the rusty militia loaded ammunition, and they bombarded the train station, and smoke filled the streets.

The residents of San Francisco were frightened by the sudden battle, their doors and windows were closed, and they all avoided the near the train station.

The city was filled with smoke, and tens of thousands of residents still didn't know what was going on.

Chinatown, this is the territory of the Ming Dynasty immigrants, and even the police officers in San Francisco dare not care about the matter here.

Ming Dynasty immigrants had a huge influence in California, especially San Francisco. They formed their own circle because of their arrival to hunt for gold. There are governments or rivers and lakes where there are people, while those who have the right to speak in Chinatown were the first group of veterans who came here to hunt for gold.

These veterans were previously led by Chu Qi to come to the door and asked them to serve the empire, and they all made a promise.

They were still waiting and watching, not knowing what people from their hometown asked them to do for the empire.

But San Francisco was affected by the war, and they realized that San Francisco was about to change.

More than a dozen Chinatown veterans gathered in a very traditional oriental house, and they sat in the hall according to their respective identities.

"The train station in San Francisco is not far from our Chinatown. I hope the war will not sweep into our Chinatown. We have a lot of property here."

"I'm afraid the firefighting in the city is not that simple. Our people went to check and found hundreds of people fighting fire and used artillery. The two sides of the firefighting were the governor of California and the rebels in the east."

"Have our Ming Empire soldiers not arrived in San Francisco yet?"

"I don't know, nor do I know whether the Ming army will take over San Francisco."

"I suggest that all the adult men in our Ming Dynasty in San Francisco should carry muskets with them, put martial law on Chinatown, and protect the safety of our Chinatown."

"agree."

"I have no objection."

After a brief discussion, the veterans of Chinatown planned to distribute muskets to all the adult men in Chinatown, and they guarded the entrance to Chinatown and protected their homes.

A Han man who was a police officer in San Francisco trotted in: "Old Lin, Mr. Mayor wants our Chinatown to send a team of militia to help encircle and suppress the rebels who occupied the railway station!"

More than a dozen elders looked at each other.

"What do you think?"

"This is a rebellion within their Americans, and it has nothing to do with us. We are here to hunt for gold and pay taxes for them. Our people will not sacrifice unnecessary for their civil war."

"Yes, go back and tell the mayor that we will not be alone in Chinatown."

These Chinatown veterans did not give the San Francisco mayor face.

They are the uncrowned kings of the underground world of San Francisco and have a lot of wealth. Part of San Francisco's financial source comes from Chinatown. They will also sponsor the elections of state legislators, mayors, and mayors. At this time, they can challenge the mayor of San Francisco.
