Chapter 7: General Temple Village

Wancheng in August is like a steamer, but when we get here, the heat all the way suddenly disappears, just like from the hot summer, it suddenly enters the clear and refreshing autumn, making people's mood calm, as if they can forget all their worries.

Such a scenery and such a climate made Ji Wenyu envious. Although his hometown is also in the countryside and his natural conditions are quite good, it can be seen immediately when compared with this place. If he hadn't had to live and work hard for his future, he really wanted to live in seclusion here.

Although the Jiangjunmiao Village is located in a mountainous area, the size of the village is not small at all. The population of the entire village is at least more than 1,000, but the economic situation of the village is a bit terrible. Stone wall houses, earth-brown houses, and wooden houses account for the vast majority. The better ones are just old houses built with blue bricks and blue tiles mixed with stones and earth walls. I don’t know how many years ago, there are no more than ten truly modern red brick bungalows.

There must be schools in such a large village, but looking at the surrounding environment and the economic conditions of the entire village, the school situation is definitely not much better. No wonder the teaching building donated by Party A will be here.

The sound of the jeep had already alarmed the entire village. In a blink of an eye, the quiet village suddenly became lively. Many villagers who were idle at home had come out. In just a few minutes, the car was surrounded by villagers watching the fun, including men, women, young and old, and at least hundreds of people.

Ji Wenyu and Zhang Yang stood in front of the car, not knowing what to do next. They were watched by so many people like monkeys in the zoo, and it was the first time they couldn't help but feel a little cramped.

Mr. Wang had already got out of the car and looked at the villagers around him and asked, "Are you the village chief here?"

At this time, someone shouted behind him: "Here, come, get out of here, let me in."

The crowd suddenly made a passage open, and an old man and a middle-aged man walked in from outside. The old man smiled and stretched out his hand and said, "Oh, Mr. Wang is here, welcome, welcome."

When the county was discussing the preparations for the construction of the teaching building in the county these days, the village chief met Mr. Wang twice, so he recognized him at a glance.

Mr. Wang also stretched out his hand and shook the old man, and then said, "I originally thought that the construction would start in two days, but the county temporarily notified me that the groundbreaking ceremony would be held tomorrow, so I had to come here early. Village Chief Hu, both of them are employees of our company. This is Ji Wenyu, this is Zhang Yang. Zhang Yang will stay here to be responsible for the construction of the teaching building in the future. In the future, they will trouble the village chief to take care of it."

"Mr. Wang is so polite. You are here to build a school for us. This is to contribute to our village. Isn't it natural to take care of him?" The old man, Village Chief Hu, laughed and reached out to shake hands with Ji Wenyu and Zhang Yang respectively.

Then Village Chief Hu pointed to the middle-aged man next to him and said, "This is Principal Fan from our village primary school. You can also get to know him. He is responsible for the construction matters."

After everyone got to know each other, Mr. Wang said again: "Captain Hu, have you chosen the location of the teaching building? Take us to have a look."

"I have already chosen it, and I'm waiting for you to come. Just ahead, come with me." said Chief Hu.

Afterwards, Village Chief Hu and Principal Fan, led Mr. Wang, Ji Wenyu and others to walk forward together, followed by a large group of villagers watching the fun. Now it is not the busy farming season, and the villagers are all idle at home and have nothing to do, so they have been suffocated. Building a school is another major event in the village. Who doesn’t want to come and see the fun?

After walking forward for about a few dozen meters, he came to a temple. Village Chief Hu introduced as he walked: "This temple is called General Temple, which has a history of about 300 years. This is why the name of our village comes from."

The temple in front of me is not very big, covering only one or two acres of land, it is simple, solemn, tall and majestic. Although it looks old, there is no dilapidated place. It should be cleaned and repaired frequently. It can be seen that the villagers attach great importance to this temple.

For the people in ancient times, ancestral halls and temples were where gods lived and their spiritual sustenance. They would rather live a little worse than the place where gods lived, so this type of building was much better than the houses of most people.

I remember that in the 1980s and 1990s, there was a sudden wave of building temples. Ji Wenyu's hometown was also preparing to build a temple. So many villagers donated all the blue bricks, large tiles and good wood they treasured at home. Some elderly people even kept themselves for many years and contributed all the pine, cypress and wood they prepared to make coffins after their death.

In this era, there are many ancient buildings like this from the Ming and Qing dynasties. For example, in Ji Wenyu's hometown, there is a building similar to this one. It is the old ancestral hall of their Ji surname, which has a history of more than 300 years. Ji Wenyu couldn't help but look at the temple a few more times.

Seeing that Ji Wenyu was quite curious about the general temple, Principal Fan introduced: "This temple worships our ancestor General Lei. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, General Lei brought some subordinates to fight against the Qing Dynasty and protect the country and the people. He was quite famous in several surrounding prefectures and counties. However, when he saw that the Ming Dynasty was destroyed and the situation was over, General Lei was disheartened and lived in seclusion here with several subordinates. After General Lei's death, everyone built this general temple. The village's major surnames Hu, Fan, Tian, and Miao were all descendants of those subordinates."

I didn’t expect that this General Temple Village would have such a legendary history. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, all forces were intertwined and they were constantly killing and fighting. There was no peace outside for a moment. This is indeed a good place to live in seclusion.

Principal Fan said as he walked: "There is a main hall in this temple, with a wing room on each side, one of which is where the teacher works and the temple Zhu lives, and the other is used for classes. The wing room is small, with more than one hundred students crowded together, regardless of grade or course, and several teachers teach at the same time, which is in chaos. Sometimes there is no way, so I have to let some students move to the main hall and teach in front of the statue of the gods. The conditions are extremely difficult."

Principal Fan said it right. More than 100 students are crowded together, and each grade has them. Teaching lectures to other grades will definitely affect students in other grades. It is difficult for children to be stable in nature, and under the interference of all parties, it is even more difficult to concentrate.

Turning over from the north side of the General Temple, we came to the back of the temple, where there was a large flat land. Village Chief Hu said: "The location of the new school is here. This place is about two or three acres. The teaching building is built at the back, which can occupy about one acre. Then, in front of the wall of the temple, you can leave a playground to give the children an activity venue."
