Volume Four, Arms Empire, Chapter 18, Ambition of Iron and Steel (890 explosions, ask for a monthly ticket)
Scale or ambition, the Army's equipment update plans exceed that of the Navy
Just like composite batteries were first used in cars, the "Longxiang Battery" was first "liked" by the Army after its release. As early as 2013, the Army built the first electric tank. The result is conceivable that the cost of this fully electric tank improved with z99|| is as high as 100 million yuan, which almost made the Army Logistics Equipment Department "bank".
The high cost made the Army choose the same method as the Navy: first conduct the experiment.
The all-electric tank named "Leihu" was not equipped with combat troops or test troops under the General Staff Department, but was provided to the Army Logistics Equipment Department.
In the following years, "Thunder Tiger" "transformed" several times.
After completing the basic performance test of the electric tank, the engineers dismantled the "Leihu" and transformed the "Leibao" fully electric infantry fighting vehicle without only retaining the chassis and power propulsion system. After completing the relevant tests, they were transformed into "Leixiang" fully electric self-propelled howitzer and "Leixi" fully electric self-propelled rocket launcher.
Through years of testing, the Army summarized all-electric equipment.
In the summary report submitted by the Logistics Equipment Department, the first thing mentioned is not the superior performance of all-electric equipment, but the new requirements for the Army's logistics support system for all-electric equipment.
Unlike the Air Force and the Navy, the Army's equipment has higher requirements for logistics support.
The main source of power for air force fighters and naval warships is still internal combustion engines and external combustion engines (turbo engines) that use fossil fuel. Even the "Swordfish" submarine does not have to consider replenishing power when performing combat missions. Even ground fighters equipped with electric turboaccelerators can return to the base to replenish power after completing combat missions. The situation in the army and ground is completely different. Whether it is tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, or self-propelled artillery, they cannot drop their positions after completing combat missions and return to the rear camp to replenish power.
If the Army wants to fully replace all-electric equipment, it must first solve the problem of "charging" in the battlefield.
There is only one solution: a small fusion reactor.
Compared with the Navy, the Army has higher requirements for miniaturization of fusion reactors. At least it can be transported by heavy trucks carrying motorized strategic ballistic missiles. It is best to be airlifted by a tactical transport aircraft of Y-14. That is to say, the total weight of the fusion reactor must be controlled below 70 and preferably below 50.
Why not consider other solutions?
Power generation with internal combustion engines or external combustion engines must be solved. The fuel transportation problem must be solved. The significance of electric equipment is gone; the risk of deploying a fission reactor to the front line is too high. If the combat loss is equivalent to throwing an atomic bomb behind oneself; only the energy density and safety of the fusion reactor can meet the combat requirements.
Miniaturization of fusion reactors is not a simple matter.
By early 20177, even fusion reactors used for aircraft carrier grounds were not successfully developed, let alone fusion reactors loaded on heavy trucks?
If this problem cannot be solved, the Army does not need to fully promote electric equipment.
Peng Maobang suppressed the plan to comprehensively develop electric equipment and invested more funds into basic research. He jointly developed small fusion reactors with the Navy, jointly developed high-performance military computers with the Air Force, provided tens of billions of research funds to the Physical Experiment Center, and fully participated in the relevant work of the "National Strategic Defense Plan".
The Chief of Staff did not give up the comprehensive promotion of electric weapons, but only adopted the policy of "curve the country to save the country".
Under Peng Maobang's personal promotion, the Army has gone the fastest and farthest in the research of new concept weapons.
As early as 2014, after "Lei Hu" turned into "Lei Bao", before Ji Youguo approved the second phase of the research project, Peng Maobang personally wrote a development report called "Looking for the Future Army". Strictly speaking, this report was written by a senior staff officer who specialized in technology in the General Staff Department, but Peng Maobang's name was put at the forefront when signing.
In this report, the Future Army is completely different from the Modern Army.
The weight of the main battle tank will be reduced from 50 to 70 to less than 20 tons, equipped with strong electric power drive equipment, high-strength alloy armor and electromagnetic guns, and have active and passive defense capabilities. It is an indispensable key node in the future military network.
When the report was released, almost everyone regarded the "future weapons" mentioned in it as "science fiction works".
After just 3 years, many new technologies and materials necessary for "future weapons" have been released one after another.
High-strength alloys can make future tanks have unparalleled defense capabilities, electromagnetic guns will give future tanks powerful damage capabilities, and military networking will make future tanks an ideal combat platform.
In addition to the power supply system, the key is: the price of composite batteries.
Compared with the Navy and Air Force, the Army attaches more importance to "price".
After Ji Youguo came to power, military expenditures have been tilted towards the navy and the air force, and the proportion of the army has decreased year by year. By 2015, the army had only the only share in the defense budget. Although it was still the "boss" of the three armies, after removing personnel allowances and equipment maintenance costs, the cost of purchasing new equipment was the least among the three armies.
Compared with the Navy and Air Force, the Army has the largest equipment scale.
At the end of 2015,
During the military expenditure in 20166, the Army submitted a report.
According to the long-term plan of military reform, the Chinese Army will need at least 2,500 main battle tanks, 3,700 infantry fighting vehicles, 2,700 self-propelled artillery and rocket launchers, wheeled armored vehicles and 2,100c small and medium-sized military vehicles in the future.
If each main battle tank is equipped with 1,200 kilograms of "Longxiang Battery", 950 kilograms of infantry fighting vehicles, 11c0 kilograms of self-propelled artillery and rocket launchers, 700 kilograms of wheeled armored vehicles, and 550 kilograms of small and medium-sized military vehicles, a total of 25,515 "Longxiang Battery" is needed.
In 2015, the total output of "Longxiang Battery" was 780~: Even if "Longxiang Battery" is not used elsewhere, it will take 33 years to complete the replacement plan! Based on actual circumstances, even if you use level 6 or even composite batteries on some secondary equipment, it will take nearly 30 years to replace all old-fashioned equipment.
Thirty years later, the Army has begun its second update.
Based on the actual situation, let alone changing the army in full, even if "using good steel on the edge" and giving priority to taking care of the Army's aviation, the "Longxiang Battery" real estate production cannot meet the actual needs.
At that time, the "Flying Eagle" was the only fully electric helicopter in the Army Aviation Corps.
Although the "Flying Eagle" showed unparalleled combat capabilities in the training and confrontation exercises of the test troops, and the "Flying Eagle"'s combat capabilities were formalized in the Fourth India-Pakistan War, in 20166, Peng Maobang only approved a fully electric equipment development plan, namely the "Flying Eagle" upgrade and improvement plan.
Improvements are also aimed at avionics, not power systems.
It was not until the end of 20166 that Peng Maobang approved the development plan for the new concept of all-electric tank code-named "Hot Wheels" and the new concept of all-electric infantry fighting vehicle code-named "Sisters Cloud".
Compared with "Thunder Tiger" and "Thunder Leopard", "Hot Wheel" and "Somedog Cloud" add research on the application of new materials.
Because the relevant plan is still under approval, the documents provided by Pan Yunsheng to Ji Youguo only provide a very simple introduction.
The test goal of "Hot Wheels" is to control the combat weight to less than 25, use high-strength alloy as armor, and use rail electromagnetic guns powered by a 12-level composite battery. The maximum road speed exceeds 00 kilometers per hour, the maximum off-road speed exceeds 50 kilometers per hour, the maximum road trip is 750 kilometers per hour, and the maximum off-road trip is 300 kilometers per hour.
Very high indicators are more advanced than all landlord battle tanks in service and abroad.
"Sisters Cloud" is the "partner" of "Hot Wheels". Its maneuverability is not much different. It is just replaced with electromagnetic cannons with much less powerful power (electric heater cannons are alternative main battle weapons), and it adds heavy anti-tank missiles, requiring it to carry at least 8 fully armed infantrymen, and have the ability to provide ammunition support for infantrymen.
After reading the relevant report, Ji Youguo was wondering whether the Army's development plan could be successful.
As an independent arm of the Army, the Army Aviation Corps also proposed a new concept electric equipment development plan in 20166.
The focus is not on armed helicopters, but on heavy transport helicopters.
Relatively speaking, heavy transport helicopters have more significance than armed helicopters.
In the military reform proposed by Ji Youguo, the main combat mission of the army and local governments in the future will not be to fight large-scale wars, but to deal with various sudden armed conflicts and local wars. As the joint combat of the three armies begins to take shape, the army's requirements for its own firepower and protection are decreasing, and the requirements for mobility are increasing sharply.
Strategic mobility requires cooperation with the Air Force and Navy. What the Army can do is to improve the tactical mobility of the troops.
The rapid assault capability is the main manifestation of the army's tactical maneuverability, and rapid assault requires tactical airlift capability mainly based on helicopters.
An army with strong and fast response capabilities must have a huge number of transport helicopters.
The US military had more than 2,300 transport helicopters, Russia had 1,700 transport helicopters, France had 1,700 transport helicopters, and even Japan had more than 500 transport helicopters. At the end of the Fourth India-Pakistan War, the Republic had fewer transport helicopters. Compared with its huge total force, the Army Air Force was obviously weaker.
The key to developing the Army Aviation Corps is still the production capacity and price of composite batteries.
The Army Aviation Development Report mentioned that if an air assault brigade is to be established, at least 400 transport helicopters need to be purchased. In addition to other troops, the Army Aviation needs to be purchased in total 2,100 transport helicopters. If all are fully electric helicopters, at least 15,000 is required: "Longxiang Battery".
It can be seen that the production and price of composite batteries have become bottlenecks in national defense construction.
Strictly speaking, this has also had a very big impact on the industrial structure adjustment that the Republic is advancing.
After reading the report of the three armies, Ji Youguo had to admit that several new technologies have brought unprecedented opportunities to the Republic and posed unprecedented challenges to the Republic!
