Chapter 10 Betrayal

Kelly tackled the fresh oysters as an appetizer, showing a satisfied expression, without any concern for the lady. Then, her goal shifted to the mackerel mixed with sour cream.

And Eric just stared at the food on the plate, thinking about something in a daze.

Kelly swayed in front of him with the oily fork in her hand: "Hey, although I know you are having a headache by all kinds of problems now, it will be useless even if you want to break your head here. If you are hungry, you can't do anything."

Eric stared at the salmon roll in front of him in a daze, and responded unconsciously, "Maybe you are right."

Kelly sighed: "I said..."

Before she could finish her words, Eric stood up unexpectedly as if he had installed a spring, which scared her.

"Sorry, I have something to do... Go out for a moment and come back in a while."

After leaving this sentence, he quickly left the restaurant without waiting for Kelly to respond.

Although the rain had stopped, the air outside was still cold, and the night wind was almost like it was about to pierce into his bones, stimulating his brain to keep awake. He walked along the road he had walked during the day towards the villa where Augustine lived, feeling indescribable.

He had a premonition that Augustine might tell him most of the things he wanted to know, many of which he might not be ready to accept. He was thinking all the way and unknowingly returned to the old villa.

At this moment, night has completely fallen, and there is almost no light source next to the villa in the remote suburbs. The huge duplex building looks like a monster with its teeth and claws, surrounded by countless waist-high weeds.

Eric came to the door, knocked gently, and was surprised to find that the door was not closed.

Thinking of the miserable fear on Augustine's face when he saw him coming to the door, and the sound of being eager to lock the chain when he finally closed the door, he instinctively had a premonition that something might have happened.

Pushing open the door gently, a little light reflected on the floor of the corridor at the door, which was the light from the living room chandeliers. Eric walked into the house lightly and found the sloppy Mr. August Nicotine in the living room - or his body.

Matt Augustine was still wearing the ridiculous pajamas, and her whole body was hanging under a chandelier like a big sandbag, and her face had been distorted and deformed due to suffocation. The dark light cast the shadow of the corpse on the pink and white walls, and it changed its shape as the corpse rotated, which seemed particularly terrifying.

Why did Augustine hang himself? Could it be that Eric's arrival promoted something that made him so afraid that he had to escape by death? Or did someone kill him and pretend to commit suicide to cover up his eyes?

In any case, the mystery that was originally about to be solved was covered up again as the man died. When Eric thought of this, he felt distraught. He felt like he was being stared at at any time, as if he was a train following the trajectory arranged by someone. Just before he came into contact with the truth, the clues were cut off. Maybe this was not a coincidence, maybe his whereabouts were indeed stared at... wait.

What he noticed, a critical detail that he didn't notice when he first came in.

Could it be...

The wind was getting louder and louder outside the window, and the branches were slapped at the old window desperately, as if they were about to break into the window.

It took only about thirty minutes from Eric leaving and back to the restaurant. When he returned to the dining table, Kelly had finished eating and was bored fiddling with his cell phone.

"Where have you gone? So slow?" she complained with dissatisfaction. "I thought you just threw me back to Manhattan without saying a word...what's wrong with you?"

She noticed that Eric looked weird and even hostile, like a cold steel knife.

"Matt Augustine is dead," he said coldly.

"Ah! How could it be..."

"The game is over." Eric said coldly, "You killed it, right?"

Kelly was stunned: "What are you talking about?"

"When you said you wanted to find a hotel to take a break in the afternoon, you weren't in the room at all, right? You just killed him to find an opportunity to leave my field of vision, that's all. When we found Augustine in the morning, I thought he was frightened because he saw me, afraid of being implicated in trouble, or afraid of recalling what happened in the past, but it was not like that. In fact, he didn't recognize who I was at all at that time, so when I later reported my name, he looked at me with surprise."

After pausing, he continued, "Actually, what he is afraid of... is it you? He recognized you at a glance. He knew who you are."

Kelly gave up on disguise completely and burst into laughter.

"Yes, yes, that idiot at least knows that he is useless to escape. It would be better to say that once he tries to escape, he will die." Kelly said in a relaxed tone, his temperament was like a 180-degree turn from a pure female student to a conspirator. "But this idiot thought I didn't notice the whisper in your ear. Unfortunately, my hearing was also very good. The old man could have lived a few more years, and some things he knew might be useful to us in the future. The only condition for us to let him live is not to reveal secrets to anyone. As a result, this idiot still couldn't help but want to talk too much to you, so he had to kill him... But I still have something I can't figure out, how did you notice it was mine?"

"The smell of perfume." Eric said coldly, "Sorry, my nose is also very good. The old man's house has obviously not been a passerby for many years. It is obvious that there shouldn't be a woman's perfume on the scene."

"Ha, it's really smart, Charlotte~"

Eric clenched his fists, his teeth clattering: "Who are you...?"

"As you know, Kelly Samir," she said, "this identity is real. Until last year, I was indeed an ordinary high school girl, your classmate. But it was thanks to you. Just because I am the only one who is closer to you, they would pull me into the group, turn me into what I am today, and put me next to you and monitor you at any time."

"'This is what it is today'?" Eric keenly captured a word.

"Yes...it's like this!"

As soon as she finished speaking, the beautiful face suddenly twisted. The back of her clothes was torn violently, and the sharp tentacles broke out like blades, like a poisonous scorpion.
