11. Road in the dark(2/2)
The old man smoked a cigar, he patted Meilin on the shoulder and said to Meilin:
"Remember the Captain America I just mentioned? We have heard a lot of legendary stories about Steve on the battlefield, but few people know what Steve did before becoming a hero, but I know. He is a frail and sick young man from Brooklyn who wants to do something good."
"But what I want to tell you is that in your life, you have to distinguish what can support you, make you stronger and stronger, and what will be washed away by time and waste your time."
He stretched out his finger and pointed to Merlin's heart, and he said earnestly:
"Those things that can give you persist should be held to you. Because life is too long, you have to fight yourself. Your love, attachment to your family, expectation for hope, will to solve problems, persistence towards light, etc."
"And those things that will be filtered by time do not need to be too nostalgic. If you should be released, you will be released because life is too long, do you understand? If you always hold on to those meaningless things, just like carrying a heavier and heavier mountain, you will eventually be crushed. Yes, what I am talking about is your hatred and disgust for yourself, which is unnecessary."
"That's not because you took the initiative to choose to be like this, you were forced to get to this point."
Merlin didn't answer, he didn't know how to answer, and it took several minutes before he raised his head and looked at the old man with clear eyes:
"I can't understand what you said, but I'll try to do this. Can you give me some more advice?"
The old man put the cigar in his hand into his mouth, took a sip, and said:
"Haha, I'm just a comic book artist. I've never experienced your story. How can I give you advice? Merlin."
"But when I joined the army, there was a psychologist in our team. You know, psychologists were still very rare in those days. In short, he always told us a lot of things, and I forgot them, but I still remember that he said something, which made sense."
"Merlin, we must get used to the separation of the world, or replace some things we like and are familiar with. This process is called growth."
"The taste of growth is always complicated. The familiar past may only be used to miss it, and the things you rely on may have to learn to let go. You are no longer the self of the past. What I want to say is that you have to get used to your current self, you have to accept yourself, including the power in your body."
Speaking of this, the old man's eyes turned, like an old fox who was about to steal a chicken, he said to Merlin:
"Ahem, speaking of this, I remember, you said just now, last night, you caused an explosion in Chicago? Can you control that power?"
Merlin looked at the old man in confusion, and the old man pointed to the cargo and twisted carriages behind the carriage that were blocking the entrance of the tunnel. He lowered his voice and said to Merlin:
"There are more than 200 people trapped in this tunnel now. We have no ability to break the blockade. It is almost dawn, but people are restless. According to my experience, Merlin, if there is no hope again, something bad will happen."
"I mean, if you can control the power in your body, you can create another explosion that blows up the things that block the tunnel and saves us."
The old man stretched out his hand and patted Merlin on the shoulder, and he said:
"Don't you want to know how to relieve your guilt and self-hate?"
"Then go and atone for sins, use this cursed power to atone for sins, be a well, be a hero, like Steve. Merlin, Steve said something, what I heard with my own ears, is definitely not the power you have, but your heart."
Seeing that Meilin was still hesitating, the old man stood up with difficulty in holding the seat. He pushed Meilin on his shoulder, and he said:
"I will take good care of myself, go, Merlin, go be a hero and use your strength."
Merlin stretched his head out of the car window and saw the panicked people in the dark, those people lack strength and they need help. These are more than 200 lives. If they can be saved, then he who blames himself for a series of disasters caused by bad luck may really be easier.
Meilin looked back at the old man, and his eyes were full of encouragement and support. The red light spots in Meilin's eyes pounded. In the darkness, those panicked calls for help were endless, and Meilin said softly:
"Okay, sir, then I'll try it."
The old man shrugged and put the cigar in his mouth and took a breath. As the smoke rose, he looked at Merlin who was turning out of the carriage and said with a smile:
"I have a name, what a rude brat. You should call me Martin, or like the other young people, call me."
