Chapter 16 Defending Niushou Mountain

Because time is too tight, the slideshow is quite rough, but the effect after the screening is really good. When Tang Shengzhi's huge photo was accompanied by his recording, more than 18,000 officers and soldiers were in an instant. At this moment, even if they were lined up with a dense infantry formation to charge against the Japanese machine guns, they would never frown.

The hearts of Yu Jishi, Wang Yaowu, Feng Shengfa and others were finally released back into their stomachs. As the saying goes, knowing shame and being brave, the officers and soldiers of the 74th Army had regained their fighting spirit after realizing the shame. In addition, the newly added military weapons of the Military Commission have already gained the confidence and confidence to fight with the Japanese army.

In the crowd, Xu Shijiu sighed faintly.

On the screen, Tang Shengzhi's expression was so resolute, and the sounds from the microphone were so powerful. Everyone was willing to believe that Old Tang was not just talking on his mouth. He was serious this time! But the question is, even if Old Tang was willing to kill himself in Nanjing, would Chairman Jiang really help him?

#############

The next day, the 51st Division and 58th Division of the 74th Army were stationed in Chunhua Town and Niushou Mountain respectively.

According to the defense plan formulated by the Nanjing Garrison Command, the 74th Army was responsible for defending the front lines of Guanghuamen from Shuixi to Niushou Mountain, Fangshan, and Chunhua Town. Yu Jishi placed the 51st Division in Chunhua Town, responsible for cutting off the Ninghu Highway, and 58 was placed on Niushou Mountain, responsible for cutting off the Ninghang Highway.

Niushou Mountain is located in the southern suburbs of Nanjing, also known as Tianque Mountain. On the "Jinling Ancient" day, I looked at the two peaks in a distance, like a horn of a cow, so it was named Niushou Mountain. Niushou Mountain faced against Zijin Mountain in the northern suburbs, which is a strategic focus for controlling the city of Nanjing. It has been a place that military strategists must compete for since ancient times. The main peak of Niushou Mountain is about 300 meters high, and the left and right sides are Xiongshan and Jianshan. The road from Nanjing to Hangzhou passes through Xiongshan and Niushou Mountain, Jianshan.

As long as the 58th Division guards three hills, it can completely cut the northward route of the Japanese army on the southern route.

After inspecting the terrain on the spot, two completely opposite opinions were formed on how to defend Niushou Mountain. Most officers led by Major General He Lingxiao, 172nd Brigade, believed that although Niushou Mountain was steep and easy to defend and difficult to attack, it was also easy to be intercepted by the Japanese army. Therefore, they advocated only place a regiment of troops in Niushou Mountain as the barrier for the main force of the division, and the main force of the division was placed on the line of Tiexin Bridge behind Niushou Mountain to Zhonghuamen, forming a deep staging arrangement.

Xu Shijiu put forward another opinion. Xu Shijiu believed that the entire Nanjing defense battle was a lonely army to defend the Jedi. It can be said that there were no strong soldiers inside and no strong support outside, and the strategic depth was extremely limited. Then, the external support points such as Niushou Mountain, Zijin Mountain, Qinglong Mountain, Wulong Mountain, and Mufu Mountain were extremely important.

Therefore, Xu Shijiu believed that the 58th Division should do its best to defend Niushou Mountain. As long as the 58th Division can defend Niushou Mountain, the main force of the Japanese army heading north from Langxi will not be able to cross Niushou Mountain to pose a threat to Nanjing Wucheng. Even if the Japanese army sent a small group of troops to intercept the 58th Division's retreat, it is not worth worrying. The 58th Division can completely stock up on military rations and store more ammunition and no medicine in Niushou Mountain.

In short, as long as there is one person in the 58th Division alive, the Japanese army will not want to pass here, let alone pose a threat to the Nanjing City behind Niushou Mountain. Even if the 58th Division is destroyed under the heavy Japanese siege, it can at least delay the battle for the city walls and street battles as much as possible.

If the 74th Army, 66th Army, 83rd Army and the 2nd Army, which are responsible for guarding the outer defense line, can all be determined to die, fight for the enemy in an instant and never retreat, then the Japanese army will suffer heavy losses, and the battle for city walls and street fighting will be greatly delayed. If you want to conquer Nanjing, you don’t know how much time it will take or how much price it will cost.

Finally, Xu Shijiu said to Feng Shengfa with a firm determination: "Nanjing has become a strategic death ground. The Nanjing defense battle is almost a battle of death. Only by putting it to death can a young manpower, material resources and financial resources in the Battle of Shanghai. They may not be able to withstand another protracted war of attrition."

Feng Shengfa finally adopted Xu Shijiu's suggestion, and he placed the division-level troops, including the Independent 19th Brigade and the 174th Brigade, which slandered the vitality in the Battle of Qingpu, on the main peak, guarded Xiongshan with the 343rd Regiment of the 172nd Brigade, and guarded Xiongshan with the 344th Regiment, and supported Jianshan with Niushou Mountain. He then dug a large number of anti-war trenches on the mountain road.

When convening all battalion commanders and above 58th Division for a meeting, Feng Shengfa clearly stated that this time, he should be determined to die. He is in a position, so there is no need to protect the flanks and rear guards. Let's just say it straightforwardly. If you guard Niushou Mountain this time, you should not go down the mountain alive. Xiao Riwu originally wanted to copy the 58th Division's retreat, so let them go.

At the meeting, more than a dozen battalion commanders of the 58th Division were so excited that they were yelling by Feng Shengfa's cold statement. Several battalion commanders even wrote blood letters on the spot, and then followed the colleagues to make the final farewell before their death. The scene was extremely touching. This one said, Brother Yao, let's see you in the next life, and the other said, Brother Zhang, I'll take the lead.

As soon as the military meeting was completed, the brigades, regiments and battalion commanders returned to their respective defense areas and led their troops to repair fortifications, preparing to welcome the Japanese army's attack on the southern route.

Compared with the 58th Division, the 51st Division Shouchunhua Town seems a bit concise.

Wang Yaowu, the commander of the 51st Division, did not concentrate all the troops to guard a certain point, but ordered Ji Hongru's 301st Regiment to leave Songshu, and Cheng Zhi's 302nd Regiment to occupy Fangshan, the commanding heights on the left side of Chunhua Town. He then ordered Qiu Weida's 306th Regiment to leave Hushu Town to protect Songshu and the flanks of Chunhua Town. Finally, Zhang Lingfu's 305th Regiment was placed at the Gaoqiao Gate behind Chunhua Town as a reserve team.

At first glance, Wang Yaowu's defense arrangement is still very rigorous, with outpost positions, rear positions, and flank protection, and reserves. This is basically a standard positional war arrangement, which can be attacked or defended. Once the battle situation is unfavorable, you can immediately give up Chunhua Town to retreat to Yuhuatai and even the city wall fortifications.

However, the Nanjing Defense War is not a positional war in the usual sense. The positional war in the usual sense does not have to care about the gains and losses of one or several defense lines. It can also gradually build defense lines and step-by-step defense in the rear. However, the Nanjing Defense War has almost no strategic depth, so there is a big problem with Wang Yaowu's arrangement.

In fact, the most desirable defensive strategy of the 51st Division is to place the two brigades under its jurisdiction in Fangshan on the left and right sides of the Shanghai-Nanjing Highway, fighting to the death, without having to protect its flanks and behind it at all. Because mortars were installed from Fangshan and Qinglong Mountain, heavy machinery was enough to lock the Shanghai-Nanjing Highway between the two mountains. If the Japanese army did not attack Fangshan first and Qinglong Mountain, the large army would not have any city walls near Nanjing.

Qiu Weida, the leader of the 306th Regiment, once raised objections to Wang Yaowu, but was not adopted.

The other 66th and 83rd Army also have steep places such as Kongshan, Tangshan, Xiaojiuhuashan, Qixiashan and Wulong Mountain for use, so the national army is quite beneficial in terrain. Unfortunately, except for the 58th Division and the Central Military Academy Teaching Corps occupying Niushou Mountain and Zijinshan with all their strength to defend, the other armies and divisions did not really make up their minds to defend and place their main forces at various strategic commanding heights.

#############

Zutang Mountain is located on the southern foot of Niushou Mountain, and is also the main position of Niushou Mountain. There is Hongjue Temple on the southwest foot of Zutang Mountain. The main building is Hongjue Temple Pagoda. According to legend, Hongjue Temple Pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty and was later destroyed by war. It was rebuilt by the early Ming Dynasty. The whole body was made of bricks, with seven floors and eight sides, and 25 meters high. The position of the artillery battalion directly under the 58th Division was located in the dense forest behind Hongjue Temple.

The artillery battalion of the 58th Division lost almost all mountain artillery and flat-fired artillery in the Battle of Shanghai, leaving only a small number of mortars. After the 74th Army was transferred to the Nanjing Garrison Command, Tang Shengzhi added four l50mm caliber heavy mortars to the 51st Division and 58th Division of the 74th Army. Whether it can block the Ninghang Highway depends on the four heavy mortars.

The position of the artillery battalion is located in the dense forest behind Hongjue Temple, and is located on the north slope of the southwest foot. Not only is it difficult for Japanese aviation troops to detect, but due to ballistic reasons, the Japanese field artillery and heavy artillery of the southbound Japanese army could not threaten their safety. The only thing that could threaten the safety of the artillery of the 58th Division was the ground attack of the Japanese infantry.

In order to ensure the safety of artillery as much as possible, Feng Shengfa handed over the garrison task of guarding Zutangshan to the 19th Brigade.

Feng Sheng not only placed the 19th brigade in Zutangshan, but also specially allocated more than 500 healthy supplements from all the veterans of the 58th Division who had returned from the team, making the 19th brigade a strengthening brigade with a troop of more than 800 soldiers. He also equipped the 19th brigade with two Maxim heavy machine guns and six imitation Czech light machine guns.

After doing these, Feng Shengfa still felt worried, so he came to Zutang Mountain and said to Xu Shijiu earnestly: "Ajiu, the safety of the artillery positions, especially the four heavy mortars, will directly determine whether our division can block the Japanese army from the south road at the foot of Niushou Mountain. Don't take it lightly."

Xu Shijiu straightened his face and said solemnly: "Don't worry, Master, you can't guarantee other humble positions, but Chief Tang's two words can still be used to be confident in low-level positions. You can be calm in the face of danger and meticulous in the face of difficulties. Without the order of Master, the 19th Brigade will never take a step back and will swear to live and die with Zutangshan!"

Xu Shijiu made his statement, and Feng Shengfa was a little relieved.

"But I don't know if you have any questions?" Xu Shijiu changed his mind and continued, "If Chief Tang or the Military Commander ordered you to lead your troops to retreat, what do you plan to do?"
