Chapter Eleven: A blessing, not a curse

After the candle was lit, Cheng Fengchun first smelled the original one, and then smelled the new ones.

Most people can't smell the difference, but for the nose of his spice business that he has been in for many years, the smell of these two candles can still smell subtle differences.

However, considering that Zuo Zai is just holding spices with his hands and without any measurement tools, Cheng Fengchun felt a bit incredible. The reason why Cheng Fengchun did the spice business was because his deceased wife was a flavorist (perfumer), to be precise, his wife should be a perfumer, who specially configured perfume for people.

The profession of perfumer may not be well known in China, but it is actually a profession with a long history.

The fragrance that was too far away in ancient times that was unknowingly produced when elixirs were refined and medicine was not included. During the monarchy period, European emperors and princes and nobles all had their own special perfumers. Perfumers of this period could already prepare perfumes based on specific themes.

With the decline of European emperors and nobles, many royal perfumers began to be used by merchants. Thanks to the vigorous promotion of merchants, perfume has entered the dressing tables of countless beautiful women today.

The origin of Cheng Fengchun's wife being a perfumer was a novel that the couple read together in 1986, perfume: astory of Murderer ("Perfume: A Killer's Story"). There is a sentence in the book that says this:

"People can close their eyes before greatness, before fear, before beauty, and not listen to beautiful melodies or deceptive words, but cannot escape the taste, because the taste and breathing are with each other. When a person breathes, the taste will penetrate at the same time. If a person wants to live, he cannot refuse the taste. The taste will directly penetrate into the heart, which clearly determines people's hobbies, despised and disgusted, determines desire, love, and hate. The person who dominates the taste will dominate the heart."

Taste is a very special existence for humans. No matter how rich people have imagination, they cannot imagine a taste out of thin air. Even with the same taste, everyone will feel different.

Cheng Fengchun recalled the 1980s when his wife was still alive and discussed with him what the most important taste of memory is:

"What do you think your hometown tastes?" Mrs. asked Cheng Fengchun.

"I don't know, but I feel that the smell of home smells very familiar when I went back. I can't say what it is, but I just know that it is the smell of home." Cheng Fengchun replied.

"Then do you have a particularly impressive smell?" the lady asked.

"When I was a child, my family was poor, and my mother would make a plate of braised stream fish during the holidays. When I was a child, I looked forward to eating the stream fish made by my mother every day. I felt very happy at that time." Cheng Fengchun thought about the fish made by his mother and smiled like a child.

"Why didn't I eat it when I went to your house?" The lady looked at Cheng Fengchun with a smile.

"The stream fish is very small, and it is rare for us to return to China. My mother may think that the stream fish cannot be on the table." Cheng Fengchun explained that despite years of marriage, the couple still remained as loving as before.

"The last time I went to your house, I remember the smell of burning straw in the wheat fields. I was so choking that I burst into tears, but you were taking a deep breath." The lady was a little dissatisfied.

"Yes, that should be one of the unforgettable flavors of hometown." Cheng Fengchun sighed.

...

Cheng Fengchun tried hard to bring back his thoughts that had already drifted away. After being a perfume master for many years, Mrs. Cheng could often get sudden inspiration and make some memories of her. A few years ago, when her wife passed away, no one could make the taste of Cheng Fengchun's memories of her again.

Cheng Fengchun tried hard to calm down his mood and said to Zuo:

"If you have time in the future, you can go to the showroom. You can use the spices inside as you like." After saying that, Cheng Fengchun also gave Zuo Ao a bunch of keys, which are the keys to the cabinets of the expensive spices in the showroom.

Cheng Fengchun's eyes at Zuo Zai's initially began to become a little hollow, as if he had seen something through Zuo Zai.

Cheng Fengchun's two sons did not inherit his mother's talent for perfume.

The eldest son was arranged by him to study chemical engineering and deal with various food additives all day long. He could analyze various chemical elements in the existing flavor, but he could not use natural spices to make the desired taste.

The second son Cheng Lie didn’t even study chemical engineering, and he studied art and management in college. Mrs. Cheng was able to occasionally make some tastes from memory after having many years of experience as a perfumer.

But as soon as Zuo entered the showroom, he could create the smell of cat shit that had just impressed her.

Cheng Fengchun didn't believe what Xiao Nai said at first, so he asked Zuo Zaixun to make one. Zuo Zaixun's speed of making candles made him have to believe that the little girl in front of him had a natural ability to make perfume.

Cheng Fengchun gave Zuo Zai the key and went back to the room by himself. Zuo Zai could no longer see whether he was happy or angry, which made Zuo Zai, who originally thought he had caused a big disaster, confused.

But at least, Cheng Fengchun did not ask her to take the cat shit candle to her room to light it, and the situation should not be as bad as she thought.

Although Zuo Zai took the key and she wanted to go up the next day, she was a little afraid of being so anxious to go up again. She hadn't figured out the situation yet, and was afraid that she would really cause something to happen if she turned around.

This made Xiaonai very anxious. He had rewatched all the spices in the showroom, but he had never had the chance to ravage the expensive spices contained in the cabinet.

Now that I finally got the chance, Zuo Zai didn't take him up. Xiaonai felt that Zuo Zai was really a wife.

After the language school resumed classes, Zuo went back to class. She took a twelve-week junior language course. Under normal circumstances, if you want to take the entrance exam for the American junior high school, students with zero foundation need to take the twelve-week junior course, complete the exam, and then take the twelve-week intermediate course, followed by the advanced, all of which need to pass the exam.

But Zuo Zai worked in the junior class for a month. Whether it was speaking or writing, her English was not at the same level as other students in the class. Her teacher felt that Zuo Zai should be able to go directly to the advanced class exam, so Zuo Zai really went there.

In the end, the students in the senior class did not get higher than hers. So, on Friday, September 21, 2001, Zuo Zai graduated directly from language school.

On September 24th, Zuo went to the aristocratic school that Cheng Fengchun contacted her, the trinity school (trinity school), to take the entrance exam.

Speaking of aristocratic schools, there is actually no real aristocratic schools in New York. They are the kind that you can enter as long as you have good grades and have a wealthy family.

Unlike the few aristocratic middle schools in Britain, you may not be able to enter if you have money.

But there is one thing that is similar in schools around the world, that is, the grades are good. If your dad is Bill Gates or the president of the United States, you don’t need to consider it.

The school’s annual tuition fee is 30,000 US dollars, which can also be afforded by middle-class American families. The reason why the school is famous is not because the tuition fee is expensive, but that half of the graduates can be admitted to top American universities (Ivy League, Stanford and mit).

In 2001, Zuo Jianshe's family was not even a middle class when he was placed in the United States, but Wenzhou businessmen basically paid no attention to the cost in order to study for children.

On September 24th, Zuo Zai passed the entrance examination smoothly.

Schools like Trinity are basically a father-in-law in the United States. If your father is not bad, you sign up for you as soon as you are born, and then start studying in Trinity from kindergarten, and all the way to high school graduation. There is no saying about the entrance exam.

There are a few people like Zuo Zai who want to transfer to the class to study in the sixth and seventh grades. For such people, the school will arrange an exam, and there is no problem of Zuo Zai accidentally chanting the language class too quickly.

Of course, if you are a transfer student from the United States, you only need to provide your previous scores and application letter.

Zuo Zai’s score in China is not recognized by Sany, so he needs to take the exam. But anyway, the problems that can be solved by the exam are not a problem for Zuo Zai.

According to the test results, the school felt that Zuo Zai could start 6th grade directly.

In early September, when the domestic school started, Zuo did not come back. Xiang Min realized that Zuo Jianshe said that letting his daughter go to learn English during the summer vacation was a fool to come back.

Originally, she saw that her daughter was not inappropriate in the United States, and she was quick to learn linguistics. Without saying it, she had already compromised in her heart. However, when 911 came out, Xiang Min felt that the United States was not a safe place, so she hoped that her daughter could come back.

Xiang Min went to Zuo Zai's original school to ask, because it was less than a month since the school started, and Zuo Zai's grades did not have any problem of not being able to keep up, so the school agreed to register for Zuo Zai.

Xiang Min originally planned to let Zuo come back as soon as she registered. But at the beginning, she didn't have the courage to let her daughter take a plane after 9/11, so she kept dragging her.

Zuo Jianshe heard that his daughter had been admitted to a prestigious school, so he planned to continue to do Xiang Min's work. Xiang Min was frightened by a 911 plane hitting the building and had never felt warm. He left a sentence: either Zuo would return to China or get a divorce.

In addition to being a slave of a daughter, Zuo Jianshe is also a slave of a wife. Xiang Min never said the word "divorce" after more than 20 years of marriage. In this way, at the end of September, Zuo, who had already been admitted to a prestigious school, went around again and went back.

Of course, Zuo Jianshe also had to pay for Zuo, who had agreed to make money, who had previously been keen on making money, and he had to pay $10,000 in three years of junior high school before he could get his daughter back.
