Chapter 54 Crossing the River (Part 2)

When we arrived at the center of the river, the water depth was indeed as Kelithops said, which only spread to his crotch, which made the soldiers who were a little nervous and their paces became faster.

The Persian army was originally a little far away from the river bank, but in a hurry, the dense reefs on the river bank affected their speed. The stone-cattered soldiers behind the mercenaries used their extremely long range to disrupt the array of Persian troops. Therefore, the somewhat chaotic Persian army had not yet arrived at the shore. Before the archers could shoot two rounds of arrows, the mercenaries rushed to the shore.

Orontas, the Persian nobleman who spent more time drinking wine in the camp and playing dancers, had never had a detailed investigation and understanding of the battlefield. Faced with the mercenaries who wade across the river so easily and quickly, approaching him fiercely like a hungry wolf, he was completely panicked.

Fortunately, his adjutant was calm and urged the infantry to quickly step forward and surround him.

After the first few rows of soldiers of the mercenaries rushed ashore, they had to slow down because of the rugged rocks on the shore. This gave the Persian army time to breathe. They finally surrounded them like a tide and gradually wrapped the mercenaries who came ashore tightly...

Mercenaries are never afraid of close-killing battles. The round shield in their left hand protects themselves and their teammates' bodies, raises the spear high with their right hand, and stings over the spear above the spear, stabs the enemy on the opposite side. The soldiers in the next few rows also extend the spear forward as much as possible. While protecting teammates in the front battle, they also deter the enemy. Although the soldiers behind the array cannot participate in the fight, they do not stand by. They try their best to push forward the soldiers in front, hoping to use their strength to push the opponent's line back, or even squeeze through...

The fierce Kardans directly faced the fierce attacks of the mercenaries and fought back without showing weakness. The Persians had more troops and higher terrain offset the impact of some Greek heavy infantry. The archers behind the Persian army and the archers behind the Persian army did not dare to show weakness, and desperately shot out a round of sharp arrows to fight back against the Greek stone-cale soldiers and archers.

The two sides fought bloody battles on the north bank of the Kentrit River. If the mercenaries win, they will set foot on the land of Armenia and ravage the land of Armenia, which is something that Aorongtas and his subordinates are reluctant to see; and if the mercenaries fail, they will face destruction. Therefore, both sides are trying their best.

The mercenaries standing in the river face the biggest dilemma: on the one hand, the biting river water is gradually taking away their physical strength; on the other hand, most of the Persian arrows fall on them, allowing them to protect themselves while preventing them from being washed away by the river.

Davers saw a soldier slipping and the soldiers around him went forward to rescue him, escaped from the protection of the shield, shot by an arrow, and poured into the water. He was not very serious, but he was difficult to get up because he was carrying heavy armor...

Why didn't the Spartan soldiers appear yet? Davers was anxiously looking forward in his heart.

Standing on the height of a large rock, Ojontas calmed down because of the balance of the battle. Seeing that mercenaries in the Kentrit River were struggling to the downstream by the river, he began to have hope in his heart. Of course, he couldn't see, nor would he see his soldiers falling down...

Suddenly, a huge noise came from the right wing of the military formation.

"What is Artukas doing?" Ojontas looked to the right with some anger. He saw a shocking scene: the light infantry and archers behind the right wing were fleeing in panic. Behind these defeated soldiers, hundreds of fully armed Greek soldiers formed a thin infantry front and drove the defeated soldiers to rush towards the middle...

"Greek! It's Greek!! Quick!..." Aojontas panicked again and shouted in his mouth.

The adjutant hurriedly led the Governor's personal guard to meet him, trying to stop the defeated soldiers and prevent them from rushing into the middle formation. Unexpectedly, the Greek soldiers were not like ordinary Greek heavy infantry. They ran quickly and chased the defeated soldiers who were falling behind. They slapped one out of the shield and stabbed one out of the gun. They were simply efficient killing tools. The Persians ran wildly like a demon escaping from hell. The personal guards could not stop them at all. They were instantly wrapped in front of the left and fled to the front. The Persians' right and the middle formation were completely broken...

The mercenaries blocked on the river bank easily broke through the panicked Kardans' front and began to kill...

It has to be said that Spartans who have been engaged in military training since childhood have strong tactical qualities. According to the rough plan in advance, they began to consciously drive the defeated soldiers to the river bank. Except for a few sober Persians, most of the soldiers did not know the direction and just fled with the crowd. When they saw the wide Kentrit River ahead, they burst into tears in despair...

After the personal guards escorted Aorongtas to a safe place, when Aorongtas saw that the originally vast army of more than 20,000 people were following him, he couldn't help but burst into tears. He knew that with his strength, he could no longer stop the Greek mercenaries from entering Armenian territory.

The mercenary leaders were excited. Faced with a large number of surrendered Polish soldiers, they quickly made a decision: release soldiers of other ethnic groups in Armenia, such as the Kardans, and express the goodwill of Greek mercenaries to them; and for the Persians, the leaders, including Davers, chose to massacre!

The heavy Greek infantry lined up in dense arrays ignored the pleas of thousands of Persian soldiers who had been unarmed, drove them into the Kentrit River with shield walls and spears, stabbed them at them, and used stones and arrows to cause them to push in the river in a mess. Those who fell into the water would pull the rest of the people around them in order to survive, just like crabs in jars pulling their legs to each other, and no one could escape...

Not long after, Davers looked at the densely packed corpses on the river surface. He sighed inwardly, turned his gaze away, and turned to the other shore: the Dukeya people could no longer see a trace, and it was obvious that after seeing the great defeat of the Polish army, they were so scared that they could not wince.

The mercenary guards and baggage battalions were able to easily cross the Kentrit River. Then, under the leadership of the leaders, the entire army occupied the empty camp of Orontas. The Persians who fled in a hurry left behind a large amount of material and supplies. So after the entire army sacrificed Zeus and Okeanos, they began a carnival after the victory.

Because everyone knows: after defeating Aojontas, no one in Armenia ahead can stop them from moving forward, and they are more confident about whether they can return to Greece!

Ending of Volume 1

After writing the first volume, Davers' adventure in Persia came to an end for the time being. In fact, the content I wrote is only a small part of Xenophon's "Long March". The mercenaries later experienced many difficulties and setbacks, but there is no need to waste their writing on it anymore, because that is not the focus of the book, and I am not boasting about it. I don't like to fill the books with water (in fact, the author's writing is poor and he will not pile up gorgeous rhetoric... Laugh!).

Davers was reborn in this era, adapted to this era, and through his wisdom and efforts, he became the leader of the mercenary army, gradually mastered military skills, won the morale of the army, and established a firm foothold, and had achieved the purpose of this volume. Next, he should strive for his ideals, rather than endlessly fighting on the way back to his hometown...

For me, I was relieved because this volume restricted my imagination and thinking too much. After all, the conception of this volume of the novel cannot deviate from the time, characters, events and other clues in "The Long March". On the basis of retaining about 20% of the original book, 80% of innovations were carried out.

The next story takes place is a region where readers are very unfamiliar with and scholars are not familiar with. The history of this area is only in Herodotus' History, Thucydides' History of the Peloponnese War, and other works left by scholars of that era. Combined with the ruins, inscriptions, cultural relics and other historical evidence excavated by later generations, scholars have a general understanding of the history of this area at that time, but no book records its history in detail. Therefore, the history recorded by each city-state there is intermittent, not only the political system and diplomatic relations of each city-state are unclear, but the characters, events, and the time of occurrence are also not very specific.

Based on the information I have collected (there is even less information about it in China), combined with my own inference and imagination, I have conceived a story clue that I feel is more reasonable, and as Davers moves forward, it unveils its mystery. I hope you can be satisfied.

Davers' journey of life is still long, and it's just the beginning. Let's accompany him, encourage him, and experience his legendary journey together...
