Chapter 52 Crossing the River (1)

"The whole army is in line!" the team officials shouted.

The soldiers in the river hurriedly retreated and were almost washed away by the water flow.

"There are many large and round stones at the bottom of the river, which are very slippery and difficult to walk on!" After the soldiers came ashore, they reported to the leaders.

"It seems that if there are Persians on the opposite side, it will be difficult for us to cross the river from here!" Timasong said helplessly, and the other leaders agreed. They stared at the opposite bank: the Persians had stopped moving forward, and they were close to the river bank. Their queue was about one mile long, and it seemed that there were no less than 20,000 people.

"It's Ojontas's troops!" Criano said in surprise.

Xenophon said with some regret: "It seems that he has grabbed us in front of us."

Zantiparis pointed to the other side in surprise and shouted: "Look, he has also recruited a lot of Kardans!"

The Kardanite Davers didn't understand this and turned his head to look at Phelisius in confusion.

"The Kardans are tribes living in Armenia. I heard that they were brave and aggressive, and the Persians like to recruit them as heavy infantry." Phelisius explained, pointing to the other side: "Look, that's it!"

Following the direction of his finger, Davers saw some of the Persian army wearing leather helmets, leather robes, long shields in one hand and spears in the other.

"It seems that Ojontas is trying his best to stop us, but unfortunately the Kardans are not our opponent!" Timasong said unwillingly.

"But with this river, everything is hard to say." Zantiparis said slightly pessimistically.

"Let the soldiers camp and rest first and send people to find out if there is a better place to hike across the river." Kerithops said with a calm expression.

The order was conveyed and the troops retreated to a place less than a mile from the Kentrit River to start the tree camp.

Not long after, Rides brought back a message: No Persians were found on the river bank, but some Dukeyas were found in the mountains not far away to peek at them. This made the leaders frown.

"Go and call Izam," said Kerithops.

Izam was the son who was sent by Kang Moro, the great leader of the Ksokant tribe, to be the guide. As a result, during the twenty days of spending with the Greeks, this energetic young man became very curious about the distant Greece and did not want to return to the closed mountain village and wanted to go out for a while. After obtaining Kang Moro's consent, the mercenaries accepted him.

After Izam received the news, he was stunned at first, and then swore: Those Dukeya people could never be sent by the Ksoconte tribe. He volunteered to investigate.

After obtaining the consent of the leaders, Rydes took him there. Half an hour later, he came back to report that those people were people who united in the mountains to actively attack the tribes of Greek mercenaries, and he had seen several of them.

After Yizam went out, Xenophon breathed a sigh of relief and said, "I just said that Kangmolo had worked well with us before. How could he start to make a decision just after breaking up?"

Krianno snorted: "Don't be too stingy about this Dukeya. How do you know that this son of Conmoro is not telling lies?! We have seen who Conmoro is. Every time we fight, we have to argue with us for a long time about the ownership of the trophy, and we don't even let go of a clay pot. Such a greedy person, now seeing that we are going to fight with the Persians again, how can we miss the opportunity to get a bargain!"

"What's more, the covenant has expired now and there is no restraint on him!" Timasong interrupted.

"His son is in our hands!" Xenophon reminded.

"I heard that he has more than a dozen sons, and it's no big deal to die. And who knows if Conmoro had already made up his mind to let him be an insider?!" Criano retorted.

Davers, sitting in the corner, looked at the atmosphere in the tent. Xenophon was originally an active-minded and energetic person. Recently, as he became familiar with mercenary affairs, he became more active. In the eyes of some leaders, he felt that he was too ostentatious and would find opportunities to hit him from time to time. Davers once advised him to restrain himself, and his answer was: "I did nothing wrong. Hades asked me to come here not to please someone, but to contribute his strength to save the lives of more than 10,000 Greek brothers!"

In comparison, the younger Davers is much more stable. After becoming a leader, he not only works hard to perform when he should, but also wins respect and prestige for himself. He is usually very restrained and often listens when discussing things, because he knows that these leaders have been experiencing on the battlefield for many years and are rich in experience, which is worth learning and thinking.

"We all know that Conmoro is an ambitious smart man. Smart people know when to do what. Now the most important thing that the Ksokant tribe should do is to quickly annex and digest the four tribes, so that they can integrate into his tribe, so that they can truly become his power. So as soon as he walked out of the mountains, he broke up with us in a hurry. I don't think he would provoke us in an unstable situation inside. He knows how powerful our force is, especially with many enemies around him." Davers said softly. Xenophon had a good relationship with him, and he had to help him with both public and private.

"So, the Dukeyashan people who came to peek at us, were like the boy said, the people from the tribes we defeated. They did not attack the Ksoconte tribe, but they dared to provoke the powerful ones." Kriano mocked.

"Just as you said before, they are looking for any cheaper ones to pick up." Davers replied cleverly.

Kerithops spoke: "Whether they are from the Ksokant tribe or not, on the plains, as long as we are wary, we will not be afraid of anyone. Now the important thing is to find a way to cross the river, break through the obstruction of Ojontas, and enter Armenia. Otherwise, the longer the time will be, the greater the difficulty will be."

The leaders were silent.

Time passed a day and nothing was discovered.

The next day, there was still no good news, but there were a lot of bad news: there were more and more Dukeya Mountaineers in the nearby mountains, and Rydes roughly estimated that there were about 1,000 people. The Persian soldiers opposite seemed to be increasing, and the feeling of supplies was rapidly decreasing. The soldiers who went out to collect firewood were attacked by Dukeya from time to time...

The severe situation not only made the soldiers anxious, but the leaders began to become impatient. While the leaders were discussing, Serufen suggested: Let Yizam return to the tribe and find his father Kangmoro to see if he could help the mercenaries to drive away these Dukeya people.

They were ridiculed by Timasong, and the two sides even had a quarrel.

……………………………………

Early in the morning of the third day, Xenophon took two young soldiers into the tent with a proud look. It turned out that the two soldiers had found a place where they could easily walk across the river.

Upon hearing this news, the leaders' previous conflicts and conflicts disappeared and they were all excited.

Just to avoid attracting the attention of Persians on the other side, Kerithops changed into an ordinary soldier and walked with the soldiers to a place where they could cross the river...

After finally waiting for him to come back, when he saw Kelithops' relaxed expression, everyone knew that crossing the river had been accomplished.
