Chapter 4: Anfu on public and private matters

The Han Dynasty inherited the Qin system, but it has been more than 300 years since the establishment of the Han system, and there have been both additions and deletions. However, the one that changes the most is the Han Dynasty's dynasty system.

When Emperor Gaozu had just established his country, the scene of the court meeting was very casual. Because Emperor Gaozu's early style of conduct, he believed that the court meeting was complicated according to the Qin system, he abolished them all. As a result, the ministers still called brothers and brothers at the court meeting, and some went crazy when they drank wine, "drunk or shouted, drew their swords and hit the pillars." Liu Bang couldn't bear to look at this scene, and quickly summoned the great Confucian Shu Sun Tong to formulate a set of court meeting etiquette that was not as complicated as the Qin system, but also organized. Confucianism has a place in the Han Dynasty.

Later, when Emperor Wu of Shizong, Emperor Wu realized that the dynasty was dominated by the prime minister and had many constraints. So outside the dynasty, another dynasty was established, with the emperor as the center. The rest of the dynasty officials were the emperor's consultants, and used to separate the power and duties of the prime minister.

Only by dominating the national affairs must be extraordinary. As the most outstanding emperor of the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu was able to use the Chinese and Koreans to transform the country, expand the territory and expel the barbarians, and gain power in the country. However, the times were different. After the Emperor, the emperor lived a short life and was mostly babies when he succeeded to the throne. At the time of death, he was at most thirty years old. The head of the Chinese and Koreans gradually became the emperor and became the relatives of the foreigners, and the eunuchs were jointly led by the emperor.

Fortunately, Your Majesty is old now. Although he has done many ridiculous things since he took office, he can eventually take charge of the government. The most important reason why Chen Chong came to find Zhong Yao was that although he had many friends, only Zhong Yao was the only one who could participate in the government every day.

It is embarrassing to say that Chen Chong's official position is a doctoral priest. In the Taixue School, he has the largest official position, but he does not have the right to participate in the Changchao once every five days. According to regulations, those who participate in the Changchao must be high-ranking officials from 600 to 2,000 s, while Chen Chong's official rank is just one level lower than 600 s, which is exactly one level lower.

Zhong Yao's official rank is lower than that of him, at 300 stones, but no one in the court dares to look down on him because of this, just because Zhong Yao is the Minister of Personnel.

The Shangshulang belongs to the Shangshutai, and the Shangshutai is the highest institution of the Chinese and Korean dynasties. Although his salary is low, he is still by the emperor every day and night. Whenever there are major national affairs, His Majesty may not often go to court, so he directly discusses with the Shangshutai and then decides. In terms of its influence on the country, some of the money to buy the waste rice bags of the three dukes may not be even greater than an ordinary Shangshulang.

When Zhong Yao woke up, it was already five o'clock in the morning. He cleaned up his clothes, brought his virtuous crown, wore a bronze seal and yellow ribbon. Then he carefully folded Chen Chong's paper into his sleeve bag, and then took a car to the White Tiger Gate of the North Palace, and then headed east to Zhangde Hall.

The Zhangde Hall was originally used to summon concubines by the emperor, but before Emperor Huan, there was no emperor's blessing in advance for more than ten years. Empress Dowager An Siyan couldn't bear to be empty here, so she summoned the eunuchs from the foreign relatives here to discuss state affairs. When Emperor Huan took charge of the rule, he also mistakenly regarded the mistake and regarded this place as a fixed place for the inner court. Before he knew it, the Shangshu Dean had been in charge of nearly forty years.

When Zhong Yao entered the palace, many colleagues had already begun to sort out the copywriting, but His Majesty and the regular attendants had not seen any trace yet. Fortunately, a small yellow gate walked past the gate of the palace. Zhong Yao repeatedly pulled the small yellow gate and asked, "The emperor has important matters submitted to Your Majesty. I wonder when Your Majesty will arrive?"

This little yellow gate is familiar with him. He knew that His Majesty the Emperor admired the young Shangshu. He replied with a sharp voice: "When Your Majesty gets up, he will immediately call for the defense, and assist the two princes to take the imperial examination. Attorney Jian Chang serves His Majesty on the side. The Minister wants to meet His Majesty and go to Anfu Hall."

Anfu Hall is not far from Zhangde Hall. The west side of Zhangde Hall is Hehuan Hall, and the convenient place on Hehuan Hall is Anfu Hall, which is only a few hundred steps apart. Zhong Yao breathed a sigh of relief, thanked Xiaohuangmen, and then hurried towards Anfu Hall. Logically speaking, there are internal gazes every day, but when Zi wants to go or not, only he himself knows that if there is a memorial, he can only go to see him by himself.

Although it was early morning, the weather was humid and hot, which made people feel uncomfortable. Zhong Yao approached Anfu Hall and felt that the breeze was gradually rising and the coolness was caused by the construction of Anfu Hall by the lake. Looking from afar, between the red railings and green tiles, the pavilion in the middle of the lake was pointed, and the lotus leaves were paved in all directions. Zhong Yao suddenly heard a gentle song:

"The lotus can be picked in the south of the Yangtze River, but the lotus leaves are everywhere.

Fish play among lotus leaves.

Fish plays in the east of lotus leaves, fish plays in the west of lotus leaves, fish plays in the south of lotus leaves, and fish plays in the north of lotus leaves."

The distant palace maid, Nong Yu, was like a basin of clear water, poured into his heart through his clothes. Zhong Yao kept sighing in his heart, and went to the palace to salute the small yellow gate in front of the door and said, "I'll report it to you, and say that the Secretary Zhong Yao had something to do to see Your Majesty."

Zhong Yao thought he would wait for a moment, but he would soon return and notify him to enter the hall.

The hall is wider than the Zhangde Hall, with the front and back doors wide open. Zhong Yao could vaguely see the crowded people, but before he could walk a few steps, he saw figures retreating to both sides, leaving only five or six people, and there was a shimmering wave behind him.

Zhong Yao walked forward and saw His Majesty lying on the bed behind the hall. A palace maid slapped him lightly on the side. Two children knelt on the left and right, and an old man hunched over his waist to organize the books for the children in front of the table. Zhong Yao then bowed forward and said, "My minister Zhong Yao pays homage to Your Majesty, long live Your Majesty."

The two children were one older and one younger, but they were still curious and couldn't help looking at him up and down. The old man was at ease and calm. After sorting out the books, he retreated to the side and waited for His Majesty to ask questions.

Your Majesty took a rest and then turned over and looked at Zhong Yao. He was still young, but His Majesty's dragon face was bloodless and pale as willow catkins. His eyes still emitted a divine light that was hard to see through, making people feel that he was indeed the lord of the empire and the son of God. He asked directly: "Yuan Chang, Chen Tingjian returned to Beijing yesterday, and he worked tirelessly. After only three minutes of returning home, he went to your house to plan with you. I wonder what matters are you asking me to tell me?"

This sentence is like a strange peak, which is a terrifying heart-killing statement for any minister. However, Zhong Yao's face did not change his expression and looked straight at the emperor and said, "When Chen Jijiu heard about the imperial court's summoning the Huns, he was anxious and afraid that he would cause a disaster, so he wrote a memorial and asked him to submit it to His Majesty."

After saying that, Zhong Yao took out the paper from his sleeve bag, raised his hands to his eyebrows, lowered his head and waited.

After falling down, Zhong Yao felt his eyes slowly moving away, and then His Majesty said, "Jian Shuo, come up."

The old man walked to Zhong Yao calmly, took off the paper fold with both hands, and walked to the front of the collapse with his body. In such a huge palace, only his footsteps echoed in it.

The emperor took the fold of the paper and said with a smile: "The court officials, except for him, Chen Tingjian, no one dared to write a paper for me. I heard that he was very prosperous in the bamboo paper workshop run by the Imperial College. More than half of the Imperial College used it. What is the name of this bamboo paper? Dragon-headed paper. But to be fair, Cai Hou's paper is indeed incomparable to his dragon-headed paper."

Zhong Yao replied: "Your Majesty, I also think that writing and reading on paper is far easier to write and write. If you are promoted by Your Majesty, it will be beneficial or harmful to national affairs."

His Majesty did not continue this topic. He pondered and sat up, put the memorial on the bed, and asked, "Chen Tingjian asked to send the prefect of Xihe to the West River, and hoped that I would transfer the captain of Dongping to Zhang Yi as the deputy governor of the recruitment. Zhong Qing, since you have brought this memorial to me, then you will talk about it. What do you think Chen Tingjian's proposal?"

Zhong Yao raised his head and looked at the emperor. His Majesty was also examining his expression. He sat as a mountain and said calmly: "Now that Taiqiu Duke has been mourned, the Secretary of Chen resigned from his official position and was worried. Chen Jijiu ignored the slander of the world and asked to be the prefect of Xihe, without fear of danger and obstacles, and faced difficulties. His loyalty to the country can be seen. I am a friend of Chen Jijiu, and I know that Xihe is also worried and afraid of him."

His Majesty was silent for a moment, then continued to lie back on the bed, and said to Zhong Yao with his back: "Since that's the case, then promise him."

Zhong Yao was overjoyed and said, "Thank you for your kindness."

His Majesty waved his hand and sighed, and continued, "Don't rush to thank you. I will not transfer my position to Liu Xuande for a while. Qingzhou is now turbulent, and the Dongping Army is putting out fires everywhere, so there is no way to leave him there. After this year, the situation in Qingzhou has improved slightly, and I will transfer the Dongping Army to merge as appropriate."

Zhong Yao had nothing to say, but unexpectedly the Emperor asked: "Zhong Qing, I did not follow Chen Tingjian's words before and re-activated Huangfu Yizhen, but this time I agreed to Chen Tingjian's request to take office. Do you know why?"

If Zhong Yao could still be calm about the topic before, he suddenly felt the thunder trembling, and as if he felt the scorching summer, sweat beads emerged from his forehead. After a long time, he said: "Of course, it is because the left chariot cannot defeat the thief army for half a year. If you are not sure about the major national affairs, you must carefully observe..."

Unexpectedly, the emperor smiled deeper, his laughter was a little more ghostly than Ye Xiao. His Majesty turned around and pointed at Zhong Yao and said, "Okay, even you, the 'Bao Lang', have told lies." His Majesty closed his eyelids and continued, "I know that the last time Huangfu Song was dismissed, all officials were dismissed from office after being dismissed for half a year. Ninety percent of the famous generals in the Han Dynasty would have no titles for life. But I have my reason, why not use Huangfu Song? It is simply because he has selfish intentions, and I use Chen Tingjian, just because he has no selfish intentions."

If this statement is spread, Huangfu Song's reputation for decades will be destroyed. Zhong Yao has always admired Huangfu Song and couldn't help but argue for him: "Why did Your Majesty say this? Previously, the rebel Yan Zhong used Kuai Tong's plan to say the left chariot and cavalry, and the left chariot and cavalry rejected it. Then he took office in Jizhou to appease the people and exempted taxes and interest. Then the people sang: "The world is in chaos and the city is in ruins. The mother does not protect her son and her wife loses her husband. I will rely on Huangfu to live in peace again.' It can be seen that the left chariot and cavalry is loyal. Your Majesty cannot catch the wind and shadow, but has a rift with the ministers of the country!"

The emperor sighed, "Yuan Chang, although you are well-read, you are not as far away as Chen Qing. I know everything you say. What I say is Huangfu Song's selfishness is not ambition. Since Huangfu Song pacified the thieves [1], he has lived alone, never made friends with ministers or with attendants. He has been studying military books hard all day long and cultivated his character. He has no ambition, and I know it."

Zhong Yao said in confusion: "Since that's the case, where does Your Majesty's doubt come from?"

The emperor opened his eyes and looked at Zhong Yao and said, "He loves himself too much, and he always thinks about me, fearing that I will blame him and make it difficult for him to die!"

This sentence is like a thunderbolt piercing through the spine, which made Zhong Yao suddenly realize it, and then he couldn't help but tremble slightly: The emperor's mind has reached this point, who can say that Your Majesty is not extremely smart? But if these intelligences are used for state affairs, the country will not reach this point now...

His Majesty continued to say on his own: "Huangfu Song had confronted the thief army for half a year, but he had not made any achievements. It is reasonable to put it on others, but as a left chariot, he could defeat the Yellow Turbans in the Three States in half a year. How can he be said to be like this now? I can see that he is afraid of making new achievements and putting himself on the stove. Since this is the case, he will inevitably go home and will lose several times."

"This time I let him get rid of his post for several years, and then let him make meritorious service, so that he will do his best to do it." Speaking of this, His Majesty also sighed: "But looking at the entire court, there are not many people as unambitious as him." Then the emperor asked Zhong Yao again, "Zhong Qing, do you think I admire or hate Chen Qing?"

This question has no reason, Zhong Yao could only answer: "If Your Majesty can value Tingjian, he must have appreciated it most."

Hearing the answer, the emperor showed a strange smile that Zhong Yao had never seen before. When Zhong Yao recalled it again many years later, he described the smile as "the spring plum blossoms turn into mist", and then His Majesty whispered: "I'm just about to cut off the man."

[1] Moth Thief: When Zhang Jiao was in charge, he all had yellow turbans under his command. People at that time called it the "Yellow Thief" and also called it the "Moth Thief".
