Chapter 2 Taixue Luoyangnan

Chen Chong and Wei Yan left Xu County. After inquiring about the fact that Yingyin's thief has not yet been quenched, he could only take a detour as planned, crossing the Qingshui and Yingshui one after another, and then traveling west along the Yingshui River to Yangdi, Yingyang.

When he arrived in Yangdi, Chen Chong remembered many childhood friends. He had not seen each other for many years and did not know what was going on. He wanted to go to the city to talk about it, but he also thought that the situation in the court was still unclear and time could not be squandered. Finally, he did not enter the city. From Yangcheng, he crossed back to the north of Yingshui. The plain was suddenly steep and ripples were spread across the mountains and valleys. Song Gao Mountain was as tall as a pillar. He climbed through the mountains and valleys, and the Zhuoyuan Pass was in sight.

Since Zhongping, although His Majesty still behaved absurdly, the Yellow Turban Sea still sounded a wake-up call for him. After all, when the Yellow Turban was prosperous, it was not only spread across the eight states, but also shocked the world. The most important thing was that the Yellow Turban once captured the entire Nanyang County, half of Yingchuan County, and Nanyang was the hometown of Emperor Guangwu, and it took only two days to reach from Yangcheng to Luoyang.

His Majesty attached great importance to the defense of the Eastern Capital and ordered General He Jin to lead the Yulin Army to repair the Eight Pass around Luoyang for the five Northern Army. Then he summoned evil young men from the capital as the Eight Pass defenders, and added the Eight Pass Commander to coordinate the affairs of the Eight Pass to protect the Eastern Capital and ensure that even if Nanyang, Yingchuan, Hanoi and other places are all captured, Luoyang will be as solid as a golden soup.

When Chen Chong passed the pass, he was wearing a court suit and holding a horse in his hand. He knew at a glance that it was a wealthy family. The soldiers of the Guan Jun dared not exploit him. After asking about his identity, he gave Chen Chong a gift. When Chen Chong looked back at the city, the Guan Yuan Pass was like a red brick on the horizon. He couldn't help but sigh: "Wen Chang, do you know what I feel every time I walk through this Guan Yuan Pass?"

Wei Yan was still the age of 16 or 17. For the first time, he felt curious and excited when he entered the capital with Chen Chong. He looked back at the Zhuyuan Pass reluctantly and said, "How can Yan know what Mr. Chen thinks? But in my opinion, how can he break it without tens of thousands of elite soldiers?"

"You are the ordinary truth." Seeing Wei Yan so excited, Chen Chong couldn't help laughing. He could only slow down his tone and said earnestly: "Long Wen, you must remember that things in the world cannot be thought of using ordinary truths. You must think more, think about the worst situation, think about the best situation, and ask yourself, what situation is more suitable for your own and the other party's situation."

He turned over the horse, no longer looked at the city gate behind him, and sighed: "Wu Qi once advised Wei Wuhou that the safety of the country lies in virtue, not in danger. Even if the mountains and rivers are solid, if you do not cultivate virtue, all the people in the boat will be the enemy country, what is the danger to guard?"

Then he passed the Qian family, Yanshi, and went straight to the Eastern Capital along the Luo River.

It is said that he entered the Eastern Capital, but in a strict sense, Chen Chong did not enter Luoyang City. It was just because Chen Chong was a doctoral priest in the court. As the head of the Five Classics doctors, he was responsible for matters related to the Imperial Academy, so the residence was located in the Imperial Academy. Although the Imperial Academy is the highest institution of learning in the Han Dynasty, it is located outside Luoyang City, two miles south of Kaiyang Gate.

However, it was not because the court did not pay attention to the Imperial Academy. On the contrary, it was precisely because the Imperial Academy was in the world that the imperial school chose to set up the Imperial Academy in the suburbs. During the Xinmang period, Wang Mang became famous for the Imperial Academy for the Confucian Shrine, and attracted the children of the Imperial Academy, increasing the Five Classics Doctors from one person per Scripture to five person per Scripture, and greatly enrolling the children of the Doctors. During the reign of Emperor Cheng of Han, there were only more than 3,000 doctors, and after Wang Mang took power, there were more than 10,000.

Wang Mang was able to usurp the Han Dynasty and relied on his own. One was the identity of a relative of the foreigners, and the other was the support of the Imperial Academy. Emperor Guangwu considered it over and over again. In order to strengthen the monarchy and control public opinion, he finally decided to set up the Imperial Academy in the southern suburbs of Luoyang. Later, Emperor Shun of the Han Dynasty spent a year in the first year of Yongjian, using 112,000 employees to expand the Imperial Academy, and built 240 rooms and 1,850 rooms. The Imperial Academy was like a small city. Now, the Party and the Imperial Academy has been lifted and the Imperial Academy has become more prosperous. To be roughly counted, the Imperial Academy has reached more than 30,000 students.

When Chen Chong arrived at the outskirts of Luoyang, the scorching sun was at noon, and it was also the busiest time for the market outside Luoyang. The rows of houses spread along the road. The Luoyang city walls in the distance were faintly aloud, with loud and bustling people, and the crowds of people. The corrupt battle situation in Liangzhou seemed to have no effect on the heart of this empire, like a cutting rut telling busyness, prosperity, and indifference.

This is Luoyang Horse Market. When I came, Chen Chong simply bought a Jiuyuan Horse for Wei Yan. Then the two entered the Middle East Gate, turned left by the Sangong Mansion, and left the Kaiyang Gate. In just three quarters of an hour, the Taixue was in sight.

The noisy atmosphere suddenly disappeared, and Wei Yan was riding his own New Horse and looking at the world curiously.

Not only the atmosphere, but the environment of Taixue is also unique: green bamboos are paved with pavilions, ancient mulberry trees are green, the paths are winding, and the shade is everywhere. The pavilions and houses are mostly paved with pebbles, and smoke rises from afar. There are hurried people on the road, but few people make noise. Suddenly, two large stones came into Wei Yan's eyes, one on the left and one on the right, each with a sentence written in cinnabar: No one can understand ambitions without being calm, and no one can achieve far-reaching goals without being quiet.

The convenience is suddenly clear afterwards. The stone paving roads are paved, the red doors are high, the stone railings are set horizontally, and the two big characters "Taixue" written on the plaque are written on it, with silkworm heads and swallow tails, and the round and painting style is turned.

A small official in front of the door was combing the scriptures. Chen Chong got off the horse and stood behind him for a while. The small official was unaware of it. Until a passerby student recognized Chen Chong and greeted him, the small official suddenly realized that the priest was behind him and accused him repeatedly.

Chen Chong smiled and shook his head, encouraged him a few words, then took out a copy of "Han Fei" from his luggage and gave it to him, and then called Wei Yan to continue moving forward.

Behind the door is a huge square, about a hundred feet wide and more than ten feet wide. Forty-six Xiping stone tablets [1] are placed here. At this time, there is no scene when the stone scriptures are completed, "the one who observes and imitates them, carries more than a thousand vehicles a day, fills the streets" when the stone scriptures are completed, but there are still many students discussing the meaning of the scriptures in the square to the inscription.

The convenient place behind the square is the Taixue Lecture Hall. The main lecture hall is fifteen meters long and four meters wide, and can accommodate 300 people to attend classes at the same time. The other lecture halls are slightly smaller and can accommodate about 200 people to attend classes. Continue to go south and walk through the lecture halls, it is the residence of the doctors.

Chen Chong's mansion is a three-entry courtyard, which was distributed by the court and is quite wide. When Chen Chong brought Wei Yan in, he ran into three or four students on the way. The students saluted at Chen Chong and said, "Well, teacher."

Chen Chong returned the greeting with a smile, and a student greeted, "Teacher, I heard that Mr. Wenfan has not passed away for a long time. The teacher has been resting for some reason and returned home. Why did he come back so quickly?"

Chen Chong immediately replied seriously: "The family ancestor passed away and shocked the world. There are many people who will be buried, and it is not bad for one person. What's more, there is no need to be a spiritual person for filial piety. Now the country is difficult, and it is our responsibility. I will go back to Luoyang this time to ask for a job outside. I am afraid there will be no more time to preach and teach. Don't relax."

The students looked at each other for a moment, and nodded collectively. Chen Chong bid farewell to them, tied the two horses to the carpet, and shouted to the courtyard: "A Yan! A Yan! I'm back."

Wei Yanzheng was surprised that in such a large yard, he didn't see a servant in a huddled house, but saw a woman hurriedly walking out of the room. She saw her having a round bun with a swallowtail, a three-sided embroidered skirt, a blue and white tread under her feet, a blue and white silk shoes, a face like the moon, a lips like red, and a finger like green onion, it seemed beautiful.

The woman was slightly stunned when she saw him, then saluted and said to Chen Chong: "Tingjian, why are you so anxious to come back? Have you made trouble with Uncle and Father again?"

Chen Chong scratched his head and said, "A Yan, I have always been reasoning. Besides making trouble with you, who else have I ever made trouble with?" Then he grabbed the woman's slender hand and covered her stomach and said, "A Yan, I have been traveling with Wen Chang for a day today, and my belly is still empty. You can make two bowls of wheat rice as soon as possible, and I will put it on the pad with Wen Chang first."

He saw Wei Yan being at a loss in this situation and said solemnly: "A Yan, this is Wei Wenchang of Yiyang, Xuande's brother and sister, and of course my brother and sister. Wenchang, this is my son, just call her sister-in-law. When she first married me, she did not touch Yangchun water, and then washed her hands and made soup. Now it has been several years. I guarantee that you have eaten it once and will never forget it."

Cai Yan's cheeks were so open that she was flying with glans, but it was not easy to get angry in front of outsiders. She quickly pulled her hand back and glared at Chen Chong, then lowered her head and said, "Then you go and clean up the study first and let Wen Chang rest there." Then she hurried back to the kitchen.

Chen Chong patted Wei Yan and smiled and said, "Wen Chang, come with me, I will savor you the fragrance of books." Wei Yan then came to his senses and couldn't help asking, "Jun Chen, you are more than 600 stones at your position, why do you still use your sister-in-law to cook? Isn't your family not a maiden maid?"

Chen Chong carried the luggage of the two men and led the way for Wei Yan, and said with a smile: "Wen Chang, there are some things that you don't need to leave to others to do, especially what you can do. Don't hear that you can't sweep the whole world if you don't sweep the whole house? Besides, I don't like to use others, and no one likes to be called."

Wei Yan was a little dizzy when he heard these words. He was still young and had never seen too many warm and cold people. But he could also feel the heavy feeling in Chen Chong's words, but this could not completely solve his doubts. He asked again: "Jun Chen, I see that there are two courtyards in your mansion. Just arrange a room for me, why move to the study?"

This question made Chen Chong speak a little awkwardly. He sucked and spitted for a while and could only answer awkwardly: "Wen Chang, this is not my stinginess. But when I first came here, I felt that the mansion was so wide. Only A Yan and I lived there, which was quite luxurious and could not be cleaned up. So I helped some of the cold-stricken children of the Imperial College and let them live here. Apart from Yuan Zhi, Guangyuan and the other three who had just left, there were about forty students who had all squeezed here. As a result, I forgot to leave the guest room, just let's just do it."

Speaking of this, Wei Yan suddenly asked: "Mr. Chen, have you learned all this knowledge and principles in books?"

"Some are, some are not. The writing is long, some truths cannot be learned in books, and some truths can only be learned from books." Chen Chong entered the door and straightened the bed in the corner, and replied: "It's just reading thousands of books and traveling thousands of miles, and it's indispensable. If someone has read and walked through it, the writing is long, then he may not say it's much better than me."

Wei Yan then asked, "Can Mr. Chen teach me how to read?"

Chen Chong was stunned and suddenly burst into laughter, as if he had been lucky enough to take Wei Yan's hand and sat on the bed, threw his luggage on the bed in the corner, and said happily: "Wen Chang, since you have this idea, why wouldn't I do my best?"

He immediately searched for books from the study, screened them, and packed a thick stack of them for Wei Yan, and said with a smile: "If you don't understand, you can ask me any questions, but I hope you will ask yourself before you ask me, and then answer yourself first. Only in this way can you make progress and become a pillar of the country."

While chatting and laughing, Cai Yan cooked wheat rice and brought it to the two of them. Chen Chong swept away the food like a hungry tiger coming out of the cage, and asked Cai Yan again: "A Yan, I have Yuan Chang come to me for the past few days after I left."

Cai Yan was tidying up Chen Chong's clothes while answering: "Yuan Chang came the day before yesterday and said that the court affairs were in critical condition. He asked you to go to him on the same day when you came back. However, today's court meetings have not yet dispersed. Yuan Chang should have not returned home yet. You can go later."

Chen Chong suddenly changed color and put his rice bowl aside. He couldn't help but murmur: "Did Yuan Benchu move so quickly?"

He immediately cleansed his clothes and said to Cai Yan: "A Yan, it's almost Shen Shi. Yuan Chang Ben is going to return home at You Shi. Although it's enough time, it's not too early. In case of accidents, I'll go to Yuan Chang Mansion first."

[1] Xiping Stone Classic: Xiping Stone Classic is the earliest Confucian classic carving in Chinese history. It was carved from the fourth year of Xiping of Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han Dynasty to the sixth year of Guanghe of the Eastern Han Dynasty. After it was carved, it was established at the location of the Luoyang Taixue outside the Kaiyang Gate of Luoyang City, Luoyang City, Han and Wei Dynasty at that time. Therefore, people also call this book the "Taixue Stone Classic". The stone classic is written in a combination of official script. The font is square, straight and upright, and is in line with rules and rules. It is very famous, so it is also called the "One-character Stone Classic".

The Xiping Stone Classics are of great significance in the history of Chinese culture. It represents that the two major schools of Confucianism, modern classics and ancient classics finally reached a preliminary consensus after hundreds of years of disputes. They also left behind standard official script fonts, which contributed to the development of calligraphy. They indirectly inspired printing.
