Chapter 185 Yayan Zhengyin

Wenlin Pavilion, an academic seminar, evolved into a large-scale "talking war", making the originally elegant literary venue instantly turn into a large-scale regional discrimination scene.

Li Li, who was in it, listened to the "talking" between scholars, great scholars and famous scholars from all over the world, and felt the general outbreak of regional conflicts in the north and the south, and was extremely helpless.

I wanted to say something, but I didn't know where to start, just like a poor student sitting in a confused state when sitting in a high-end academic seminar.

I watched the literati groups in the north and south camps "fight fiercely", but I couldn't do it.

The reason why the two sides "fight" is about Yayan Zhengyin.

So what is "elegant language"?

Elegant language, namely, is Mandarin, can be understood as Mandarin in later generations.

The history of Mandarin is not long, but the "elegant language" of this era originated from the Shang and Zhou dynasties.

It starts from a long time ago: What was the official language in the era of the Zhou emperor?

It is generally believed that it is the language of the Book of Songs, which is the elegant language of Luoyang, because the capital of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty was Luoyang.

Therefore, the basis of the standard sound of elegant language (correct sound) should be in the Luoyang area.

Here is the Central Plains region with Luoyang as the core, so elegant language is also called Heluo language and Heluo dialect, which is Luoyang dialect.

During the Spring and Autumn Period, Confucius taught, and the three thousand disciples came from all directions and had different accents. Therefore, when Confucius gave lectures, he had to speak "common terms".

It is said that Confucius used the elegant language of Luoyang to teach. "The Analects of Confucius·Shuer Chapter 7" says: "The elegant language of the Zi, "Poetry", "Book", and all of which are elegant languages."

During the Han Dynasty, tradition was continued, Luo language was used as Mandarin, called "zhengyin", "yayan", and also called "tongyu".

During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, Luoyang's elegant language continued to be used as Mandarin.

After the Yongjia Rebellion, Luoyang fell, and King Sima Rui of Langya established the court in Jiankang, Jiangnan.

A large number of gentry went south and lived in Jiangnan. The elegant languages they spoke of Luoyang were inevitably influenced by the local Wu language, forming the "Jiankang elegant language".

At the same time, Luoyang lost its status as the capital in the war and became a key place for all forces to compete for.

The gentry who did not go south returned to their hometown to take refuge. Hundreds of years have passed, and the elegant language of Luoyang they mentioned inevitably mixed with local dialects.

Therefore, the pure Luoyang elegant language during the Wei and Jin Dynasties had changed in the mouths of the gentry and officials in the north and south.

Although there is a pronunciation method of "Chixun" to ensure that the pronunciation of each character is in line with the "correct pronunciation" (standard pronunciation) of "Luoyang Yayan".

However, the long-term division between the north and the south and the confrontation was that even the rhyme of some characters was different.

This is an academic issue in philology (including phonology and philology), which Li Li does not understand.

He wanted to use the "pinyin method" to "set the pronunciation" of Luoyang Yayan and "promote Mandarin" nationwide, relying on the authoritative philology of Gu Yewang.

King Gu Ye is a master of philology recognized by both north and south. However, the dispute over righteous pronunciation involves "orthodox". It is impossible for scholars in the north to fight without fighting.

So the problem lies with Li Li: if he had issued a government order in the form of a conqueror, and revised the "national version" of Luoyang Yayan based on Jiankang Yayan, how could so many things come about?

But Li Li wanted to gather ideas and respect the opinions of northern scholars, so he held a discussion meeting to discuss, rather than making arbitrary decisions on his own.

Since he expressed his attitude of "welcoming enthusiastic discussions from all parties" and he should use academic discussions to determine the standard pronunciation of Luoyang Yayan, then it is inevitable that academic discussions between the scholar camps of north and south have evolved into "regional discrimination".

Because regional discrimination has been common since ancient times.

When the Three Kingdoms returned to Jin, the aristocrats in the Central Plains had obvious discrimination against people in the Jiangnan region, and the same was true in culture.

After the chaos in the Central Plains, there were no gentry who went south and thought they were left behind and still lived in the Central Plains.

The gentry who fled south was considered by the northerners to escape to the Wu Yue land where "eat meat and drink blood", and lived with the Wu family, and their bloodline was impure.

Naturally, the language is like this.

The mentality of northern gentry and scholars, and the current debate on the pronunciation of elegant language, Li Li felt that if some things from later generations were used as metaphors, it would be similar to:

Pure English pronunciation? Of course, it must be British English, and American English is spoken by novices.

British English is divided into many accents, Irish accents, Scottish accents, Welsh accents, all of which are rural accents.

Of course, English in England is "proper".

However, English in England has many accents, and the accents in different regions are very obvious.

If you speak Central English, such as Birmingham accent, you will easily be ridiculed (Birmingham accent is often used by comedians for being funny because of its heavy accent).

If you speak English in the north-central English region, such as Manchester and Liverpool accent English, it will also be looked down upon by the upper class because it is the accent of industrial workers in other places.

Well, it should be pure when speaking London-style English?

Sorry, if you speak English with an accent in the East End of London, you will still be looked down upon by the upper class: the East End of London is a worker's area.

Therefore, the purest and most representative English accent of the upper class is RP English and Oxford accent.

This is the aristocratic English spoken by the upper class, representing the British Empire...

Anyway, it's very noble, I know how to make a fortune?

Similarly, the current case of northern scholars questioning the argument that southern scholars "Jiankang's orthodox language is orthodox language", is that Jiankang's orthodox language has been "influenced" by the vulgar Wu language.

If you want to be orthodox, then, is your Jiankang elegant pronunciation? Is it the Taicheng accent (Taicheng is the Imperial City) or the Qingxi accent (Qingxi is the settlement area of wealthy families).

Is it the accent of Changganli in the south of the city (most common people live in Changganli nowadays)? Is it the accent of Shitou City in the west of the city?

Or is it the accent of the three Wu areas of the prefectures and counties in the overseas Chinese?

If it is the Taicheng accent and Emperor Sima was replaced by Emperor Liu, will the accent be influenced by Pengcheng dialect? (The Liu Song royal family is said to be from the Liu family in Pengcheng)

Or was it influenced by the Jingkou accent? (Emperor Wu of Song, Liu Yu, was born in the Northern Mansion Army, and the Northern Mansion Army has been stationed in Jingkou and other places for a long time.)

Xiao Qi used the Song Dynasty, so is the accent of the Lanling Xiao family correct?

After all, the Xiao clan of Lanling before the south was not a prominent genius. After the south, the Xiao clan of Lanling gathered in Lanling, which was established in overseas Chinese, and his accent was inevitably influenced by the local accent (Wu language).

After more than two hundred years of influence, does the elegant language on Jiankang have the right accent?

Of course, the counterattacks of southern scholars were also very sharp and mean: Oh, the northern gentry has served the barbarians for more than two hundred years, and it is really hard...

In this regard, academic issues have given way to regional discrimination. Li Li saw the white-haired Gu Yewang, and was red in debate with northern scholars, and suddenly became a little dazed.

It seemed as if they were in front of the two armies, and Prime Minister Zhuge and Wang Lang had already begun a war of verbal war.

Prime Minister Zhuge was cursing and suddenly said: I have never seen such a shameless person!

After hearing this, Wang Lang was filled with anger in his chest, shouted, and killed him on the horse.

But now, the more he looked at it, the more he felt that the person who might fall to the ground and die was the white-haired King Gu Ye.

The old man is old and has many hidden dangers of cardiovascular disease. He is excited to debate loudly with others. Who knows when the blood vessels will explode.

If someone dies, it will be bad.

Li Li also hoped that Gu Yewang would help him improve the "pinyin method", so this old expert couldn't have any trouble.

He winked, and the ritual officer responsible for maintaining order in the venue understood and quickly slowed down the debate.

Li Li asked both sides of the debate to drink a few cups of tea first, and waited for the atmosphere to "cool down" and began to set the tone:

"I have heard many debates and I have understood your views and felt that they make sense."

"Then, let's get back to the point, the court wants to determine the correct sound of Luoyang's elegant words and sounds. The primary purpose is not to determine who is orthodox, but..."

He looked around everyone and said in a calm tone but full of energy: "It is for the sake of the unification of the Central Plains, whether it is Hebei, Henan, Jiangnan, Lingbiao..."

"Or it is Jingxiang, Yiliang, Guanlong and Daishuo areas. I hope that scholars from all over the world can chant Luosheng with the correct pronunciation."

"What is Luo Sheng's chanting? The sarcasm of scholars in Luoyang is actually the accent of scholars in Luoyang."

"Since it is Luoyang Yayan, then of course, Heluo dialect is the correct pronunciation. Now I think the differences between you about certain pronunciations in Luoyang Yayan are easy to resolve."

"Luoyang has been recovered by the court. So, if there are differences in pronunciation, it depends on how the scholars in Luoyang are pronunciating now, and they are the correct pronunciation."
