1.1313 Dora Cannon
The Schwerer Gustav, also known as the Dora Cannon, is an 800mm caliber siege artillery developed by the German Krupp Company. The total weight of the cannon is close to 1,350 tons and can fire ammunition weighing up to 7 tons. The farthest firing distance is about 47 kilometers.
In early 1942, the super heavy cannon, which was manufactured, was named after the "Gustav" prefix of the Krupp family. Hitler himself and the Minister of Military Control Spel attended the acceptance ceremony, and was then purchased by the military for a 7 million imperial mark. Its barrel was 32 meters long, and the total length of the artillery in combat was 53 meters, 12 meters high, and the total weight was 1,488 tons. Such a behemoth encountered great difficulties in assembly, transportation and shooting tests. When testing ballistic performance, the loader was not very perfect, so he had to use a crane to lift the 4-ton shell to the rear of the gun body and a light tank pushed it into the barrel. In order to transport the gun to the test site, a special installation was specially set up.
Three giant transport trains with special structures were counted. The bridges along the way could not withstand such a large weight, so the train had to bypass a long detour. After arriving at the position, two giant cranes were first lifted, and then the gun mount, barrel and loading mechanism were installed. All work was commanded by a major general and more than 1,400 people to fight for three weeks. The tall giant cannon was very majestic. In order to prevent Soviet aircraft bombing, anti-aircraft artillery units and guard aircraft were deployed around the position, and a large number of infantry, patrol police and police dogs patrol day and night within 10 kilometers of the surrounding area. Once enemy plane bombing was discovered, the chemical soldiers immediately launched a smoke screen to cover it. Participate in command and operation, and the total number of guards reached more than 4,000.
Its shells were even more terrifying. Each armor-piercing shell weighed 7 tons, and a high-explosive shell weighed 4.75 tons, and the propulsion fuel was between 1.8 tons and 2 tons. It was originally planned to attack the Maginot Line, but France had surrendered at this time. The Soviet-German battlefield urgently needed heavy artillery, so the "Dora" artillery was transported to Crimea. In June 1942, all the giant artillery, including Gustav, was assembled and prepared, and was preparing to launch a final liquidation towards Sevastopol. On June 5, Gustav slowly drove out under the power of two high-power diesel engines and participated in the attack on Sevastopol. The crane behind the artillery sent the 7-ton artillery shell into the barrel, and a loud noise that shook the earth and sounded the last burial bell of Sevastopol. The shell landed accurately on the Soviet position, bringing a large area of buildings and Yong
The long-lasting fortifications were instantly flattened, and deep pits as big as four American football fields appeared on Sevastopol's position, which directly exploded the internal core of the permanent fortifications carefully built by the Soviet army. The 30-meter-deep fortifications were blown through. Immediately after the attack on the Baiya stronghold, Gustav directly penetrated the 10-meter-thick concrete fortifications and detonated the ammunition depot inside. The violent chain explosion directly sank a ship in the bay. In the 12 days from June 5 to June 17, Gustav fired a total of 48 artillery shells, destroying multiple data points including "Stalin", "Siberia", and "Maxim Gorky" forts. Among them, the White Cliff was completely razed to the ground. After the war, Sevastopol broke walls and rubble were everywhere. It was terrifying like purgatory.
The first victory was great. At the end of 1942, Gustav train guns were sent to Leningrad. After entering combat readiness, they were idle because the Soviet Union canceled the attack. In the spring of 1943, they were transferred back to the country for maintenance until Germany was defeated and was blown up by German engineers.
The high price of the 7 million Empire Mark is just the train gun itself. It does not include various supporting equipment: 28 special vehicles are required for each transportation task, including an assembly gantry crane, and two towing diesel locomotives at the destination. Moreover, a lot of human resources are consumed for this gun. Most of the 1,720 people served it are first-class engineers. Although the theoretical rate of fire is 14 rounds per day and the fastest rate of fire is about 4 rounds per hour. However, in the 12 days in actual combat, considering the volume and weight of the shells, even with mechanical power assistance, the loading speed is still very slow; and each launch requires a lot of data calculation, including: initial speed, flight time, charge volume, temperature, combustion chamber pressure, distance, weather conditions, and wear of the combustion chamber and rifle... Gustav fired a total of 48 shells. This is close to its barrel.
One third of the total life of 150 rounds.
Even for the Third Reich and the Head of State, which had "unlimited funds", it was too expensive. This was not something that could be accomplished by patting the chest and saying "unlimited funds".
"It's true as you said." Dr. Gunther Vince did not hide the fact that the Dora cannon was flawed: "The reason is the problem caused by insufficient capacity of the original standard track. After changing it to a wide rail train, all the problems were solved. We integrated all auxiliary vehicles and engineering equipment into a train cannon. We used automatic conveyor belts and automatic loaders to replace manual operation. The personnel were reduced to 100 people. If the rate of fire was not tested, a 10-person team could complete a shelling. Of course, the next shelling may have to wait until the sun rises again."
"Okay, doctor. 'It's already amazing to shoot one shot a day'." The female reporter also expressed his feelings.
With the usual rigor of the Third Reich, if this wide-gauge high-speed railway is really paved, the whole world will have no power to fight back. What's more, there are also big killers that can destroy a city in secret research and development.
The Gustav train cannon is 53 meters long, 12 meters high, and a total weight of 1,488 tons. The 40,000 horsepower "electric/diesel hybrid vehicle front" can be fully moved. As long as the problem of no ballast wide rail can be solved, everything will be natural.
From this point of view, the military "SA3 Military Express" originally had a plan to drag Gustav train guns all over the world.
"SA3 Military Express Train" "Electric/Diesel Hybrid Head" spacious and comfortable multi-layer cockpit.
The female reporter and the female test pilot who rushed over were warmly embraced.
"Tell me about this shooting." The female test pilot is a famous workaholic.
"To be honest, I don't know much." The female reporter did not hide it at all: "At the beginning, it was just a military plan initiated by the SS, code-named 'Lily Marlin'. How did it become a 'unlimited' film production? I am still confused until now."
"So that's it." The female test pilot nodded slightly: "Is Leni the director of this special shooting?"
"Yes. It has been confirmed that it is Leni Rivenstale herself." This is the news that the female reporter has confirmed.
"If it was Leni, then the subsequent plan must be participated by the head of state." The female test pilot smiled and said, "So, there is nothing to worry about."
"Ah, you're right." The female reporter nodded happily.
"When will Leni arrive?" The female test pilot seemed a little impatient.
"At the latest tomorrow." The female reporter was also well-informed.
"Doctor, please arrange the shooting team."
