Chapter 495: Remove and cover?

After a short break, Wei Ran and Gale were once again involved in cleaning up the snow. Even Dorian and Kangtan, the two patients, came to help do some work within their ability.

"Uncle Contin, something is wrong." Gail pushed a bunch of dead branches out of the bear cave, "It seems that there is still a layer underneath."

"There is another floor?" Kang Tan was stunned, "Basement?"

"Maybe it's right"

Gail said uncertainly, "Victor and I have been cleaning down the corner, but it is almost a meter deep, and there are still a lot of burnt wood and dead branches underneath."

"And there was a circle of burnt log walls around it."

Wei Ran, who had a gas mask on his face, responded in a muffled voice, "The outside of the log wall is the stone wall, and it seems that there is really a basement here."

“It seems we have good luck”

Kantan handed the dead branches and burnt wood that Gale pushed out to Dorian behind him, who put them in a sled tow truck, and after he had gathered a cart, he sent them into a tent as spare fuel.

"Uncle Kangtan, why don't we remove the collapsed layer above?"

Gail, who could already stand up in the bear cave, poked out half of his body, pointed to the slope above his head and said, "If we continue to clean it down, it will definitely collapse. We might as well tear it down directly and build a new roof on it. At that time, as long as we bury it in snow, even if the Germans stand nearby, they may not find us."

“Re-cover a layer?”

Wei Ran and Kang Tan were both stunned. The former finally knew the origin of the shelter, while the latter was shocked by this major project.

But soon, Kantan nodded, "It sounds like it's OK, but..."

“We have a lot of time, don’t we?”

Gale simply called Wei Ran to climb out, then pointed to the inclined surface on the wall and said, "It's not difficult to dismantle him. At most, it's just a little more troublesome to clean up. At that time, we can dig out half of it first and cover it with canvas, and then slowly carry out other work, so that at least we don't have to worry about the bonfire being discovered."

"Victor, what are your thoughts?" Kangtan looked at Wei Ran.

"I think this idea is good."

Wei Ran agreed without thinking, then pointed to the two logs in the distance and reminded, "Don't forget that we have a chain saw, and there are two logs thick enough to be long enough outside. As Gail said, the most difficult thing may be to clean up."

Kangtan looked up at the night sky where there was still no starlight, and finally nodded, "Since that's the case, let's tear down here now!"

Upon hearing this, Wei Ran immediately breathed a sigh of relief, but Gale was already running towards the tent and took two pickaxes.

"Do you have the strength?" Wei Ran asked after taking the pickaxe.

"Of course!" While Gale spoke, he had already stabbed the sharp corner of the pickaxe into the cracks in the remaining stone wall and began to force.

Seeing this, Wei Ran followed suit and found a gap in the vertical wall and started exerting force.

As the saying goes, destroying is always much easier than building. They took only more than ten minutes to remove a few stones. The ruins of the building that had been persisting for a long time completely collapsed with a clamor.

After completing the demolition work, everyone returned to the warm tent, each holding a lunch box containing broth to fill their stomachs. Then they sat on the thick, soft and warm bear skin, and discussed the subsequent construction plan with great enthusiasm.

Compared with Wei Ran, who was full of physical strength and spirit, these few bites of broth are absolutely crucial to the continued nutrition of Gail and others. This job of building a shelter seems to have become an invisible motivation for the three of them to survive and a substitute for their concerns about Quentin.

In the following time, Wei Ran followed these three weak but energetic Frenchmen and devoted all his energy to the cleaning work.

Clean up the wreckage of buildings, sleep and rest, drink broth, eat roasted potatoes, and even change the medicine for Kantan. After the seized watch on Kantan's wrist turned four and a half circles, most of the foundation had been almost cleaned.

Now, there is a circle of stone walls less than 30 cm high around this foundation, which is about four meters wide and five meters long. A circle of wooden walls arranged deep into the underground have been exposed on the inside of the stone wall.

Further in, there are various burnt wooden beams, wooden boards, and even some furniture fragments that can barely be seen.

"I'm becoming more and more curious about what happened here." Gail bent down and picked up the barrel of a double-barrel hunting rifle and looked at it, raised his hand and threw it away.

"In decades, people will be curious about what is going on here..."

Wei Ran muttered secretly, cleared his throat and asked, "Uncle Kangtan, how long will it take for us to rest?"

Hearing this, Kangtan rolled up his cuffs and looked, "Half an hour, and in about half an hour, we can rest for twenty minutes."

"Start up." Before Wei Ran finished speaking, he had already held a bundle of brown bears and handed them to Dorian as a bedding.

"Your physical strength is so good." Gale muttered enviously, panting and holding up a bundle of dead branches and handing them to Kangtan.

With the busyness of the crowd, the pine branches laid by the brown bear for hibernation were gradually cleaned up, and then a mixture of frozen soil and charcoal began to appear below.

"Look at what I found!"

Gale cheered after lifting a charred wooden board. Under the dim flashlight beam, there was a rusty iron bucket more than half a meter high and the thickness of a washbasin buried in the frozen soil.

The iron barrel exposed one end of the soil, and there was also a rusty handle, which could be opened.

"Pick it up, it can be used as a fireplace." After saying that, Kangtan said, and repentantly, "Forget it, don't lift it up, just put it there and see what else is around."

"Let me open this iron bucket first and see what's inside."

When Wei Ran pointed the beam of the flashlight at the inside of the iron barrel, he saw tools such as rusty nails, axes and saws. Just from the carbonized axe handle and saw handle, you can tell that these things must have been burned in the fire for a long time before they became like this.

"It seems that nothing can be used." Gail threw away the lid on his hand in disappointment.

"This iron barrel is the best harvest"

Wei Ran looked around, looked up at the snowflakes flying above his head, and suggested, "Can we rest first and discuss adding a cover to this basement to move in? Then we can hide in it and slowly clean up the soil and coke."

“What Victor said makes sense”

Kangtan didn't care about the rest time they had agreed on before, and called Wei Ran and Gail to leave the foundation and returned to the tent not far away.

By the time Dorian poured everyone a cup of hot pine needle water, Kantan had already used four small wooden sticks to put a word "mouth" in the snow, "This is the remaining basement of the house and our home for the whole winter in the future."

Everyone smiled at each other, and Kantan picked up the fifth stick and put it on it, turning the mouth into a "talk", and continued, "Just as Victor suggested, we have a chain saw, and there are two logs next to it. I was thinking about it just now that we could saw the relatively thin one in half, and put half of it in the center of the foundation as the main beam."

"Why don't we need a whole piece? That must be much stronger." Dorian asked, snotting.

"Can't lift"

Wei Ran, Gail and Kantan gave the same answer in unison, and Kantan even explained, "Even if the thin one is thick, it is still a big waist. Even if it is only half used, it is a physical work for a few of us to get it over."

"That's right" Dorian touched the back of his head.

Kang Tan smiled and continued, "We will divide the remaining half into two as auxiliary beams."

Before he finished speaking, Kangtan had added two more horizontal lines to the word "完" placed on the ground with a wooden stick. "Then it is the thickest log. We saw it into a wooden board and spread it on it, and finally took the tent open and spread it as waterproof. In this way, even if we keep burning the stove inside in the future, we don't have to worry about water leaking."

"And the branches we cleaned out before can also be spread on it to keep warm," Gale suggested, "After we move in, we can dig the soil and charcoal in the basement and lay them on it."

"I have a question," said the youngest Dorian again, "Gentlemen, have we forgotten that we need a door?"

"I really need a door, I almost forgot."

Kangtan took a sip of hot pine needle water, "We can reserve a place first, and after moving in, slowly dig out the door. Before that, it is enough to leave a temporary entrance and exit first."

After a few words, the next construction plan was agreed upon. Everyone rested around the stove for a while. Gale immediately moved out the double chain saw and walked towards the two crossed logs not far away.

Kantan took a dead branch and measured the size, and used an axe to cut the log on top, which was as thick as a 200-liter oil barrel. "Saw it from here, this length is enough."

Upon hearing this, Gail immediately activated the chain saw, and with Wei Ran's help, he easily saw it in half.

After initially becoming familiar with the use of this antique chain saw, the following work was much simpler for Wei Ran, who was first accustomed to the first time. With the cooperation of him and Gail, the two pieces of logs cut were all sawed into three or four centimeters thick wooden boards. The slightly thinner log below was also divided into two vertically, and one of them was sawed vertically into two equally.

While they were guest-starring carpenters, Kantan and Dorian were not idle either. They had used an axe and a pickaxe to chisel the circle of stone walls around the foundation that could fix the three main beams.
