0007 Sword and Shield Battle

Four days passed in a blink of an eye, and on the afternoon of June 2, the official NBA training camp was announced to end.

The league office collected physical test data from 75 players and held nearly 50 light confrontation matches, but because many high-level rookies did not participate in the competition, the quality of those games varies greatly, and the major teams were not satisfied.

Su Yang decisively proposed to general manager Kevin that the Trail Blazers would take the lead in conducting another concentrated trial.

The place is set in Orlando, and the players and their agents have not left yet, and the major teams have retained people, which can save a lot of trouble on the journey and further deepen the testing standards to facilitate finding the right candidates faster.

This kind of training camp jointly initiated by several teams was held as early as 2005, and the scale was relatively small at that time.

This time, scouts and senior executives from other teams were widely invited to the venue, striving to make it into the summer league.

Kevin adopted the suggestion and sent an invitation to other teams. Sixteen teams including the Rockets and the Timberwolves quickly accepted it. Su Yang contacted those agents and quickly received a reply willing to participate, and the whole thing was easily done.

Senior executives and agents from major teams discussed it briefly and decided to spend two days to hold the second centralized trial.

At 7 o'clock in the evening, Bob and several scouts rushed to the hotel and met with Su Yang to prepare for the final inspection.

General Manager Kevin, his assistant Tom, as well as coaching staff members such as McMillan, also arrived.

Regardless of the fatigue of the journey, the whole team gathered directly in the conference room, and the first time everyone discussed the rookie candidates.

Kevin serves as the host, starting with the point guard, with a range estimated in the second round, with a total of seven candidates.

"These people are Aaron Brooks, Gab Prutt, Jared Jordan, James Ann Curry, Taurin Green, Ramon Sessions, DJ Strobery, and the final suggestion given by the scout is Ramon Sessions."

After Kevin finished speaking, he turned his head to look at Bob, and Bob nodded to confirm.

"Tell me the specific opinion..." Chief assistant coach Monty Williams frowned and spoke, staring at the information in his hand tightly, and flipping his hands back and forth. It seemed that the suggestion given by the scout surprised him, but it was still incredible.

Bob turned his head and looked at Su Yang, hinting at whether he needed help. Su Yang nodded and said that he could do it.

"From my observations over the past four days and online videos, Ramon is a point guard with a very high ball quotient. He is good at breaking through with pick-and-roll. He is very fast, has a good view of passing the ball, and knows how to use physical contact to create fouls...

He is able to adapt quickly to our tactical system and does not require too much ball rights and is selfless."

In Su Yang's view, choosing Ramon Sessions as the third point guard will be the first to develop for half a season and the returns will be extremely high.

"You didn't mention his shortcomings..."

Monty shook his head: "He moves horizontally at a very poor speed. When he encounters point guards with strong screens and explosive power, he has almost no means of response. When we defend against pick-and-roll, it is difficult for us to use delayed obstacles and pinch attacks. If he is allowed to play, it will be very serious to lose points.

You should know that it is difficult for us to use delayed and pinched attacks when we prevent pick-and-rolls, right?"

As soon as he finished speaking, many people in the conference room focused their attention on Su Yang.

You should know!

This sentence makes Su Yang lack professionalism.

The key is that what Monty said is not false.

The current starting center of the Trail Blazers is Joel Poulzbila, and the substitute center is Reeve Lafrenz. Both of them are slow. When defending pick-and-roll, most of them use the method of squatting in the paint area, and they need to rely on the defenders to interfere with the ball holder.

Even Oden, who is very likely to choose, is a slow-speed big center forward, and it is impossible to go to the outside line to delay the blocking and attack.

"I understand what you mean..."

Faced with doubts, Su Yang said calmly: "I position him as an offensive. As a second round pick, he doesn't need such a high defensive standard. Moreover, he is good at using his height to suppress small guards and has a certain defense."

Su Yang also said in his mind, that is, point guard players have always been poor in single defense, so it’s not a big deal.

Everyone's eyes moved away from Su Yang and turned to Monty one after another, waiting for the next round of rebuttal.

"I agree with your opinion..."

Monty's expression was unchanged, "But we should have players to help Brandon Roy and other defenders share the defensive pressure, so our coaching staff agreed that DJ Strobery is a better choice, and his characteristics are..."

D.J. Strobery is indeed good at defense. He is 196 cm tall and weighs 93KG, but his speed is at the level of a point guard. He is capable of defending the first to third positions. As a link among the players in the system, he is a universal adaptation.

But D.J. Strobery's fatal flaw is that his offensive ability is so bad that he can be ignored.

One of D.J. Strobery's most famous game was St. Mary's High School, where LeBron was in high school. In the ESPN National Live Environment, he made 0 of 8 three-pointers and made 7 mistakes...

"I know, he has poor shooting and scoring skills, but we have a lot of offensive geniuses and don't need him to take on the scoring tasks, so I think he is the best choice among our second-round pick point guards. What do you think?"

After Monty finished speaking, she smiled and looked around everyone in the conference room, looking confident.

Bob and several scouts said nothing, Kevin and Tom did not respond immediately, and silence fell into the conference room.

"IMHO, last season, we averaged 94.1 points per game, ranking second to last in the league, so we still need the point guard to have a certain scoring ability. The choices should be calculated through data..."

After Su Yang finished speaking, he stared at Monty straight away, not intending to retreat at all, and was extremely confident.

The atmosphere in the conference room suddenly changed from silence to tension, and everyone felt that Su Yang was in turn implying that Monty lacked professionalism.

But Su Yang and Monty, one is a fresh graduate student, the other is a former NBA player. They retired in 2003 and scored a maximum of 30 points in their careers. They also played under the Spurs Popovich. The difference in their identities is too big.

"If you want to use data as an argument..."

Monty chuckled, "Where should you know that last season, we scored 109.9 per 100 rounds of sports offensive points, ranking fourth in the league, but that did not have much positive impact on our record. Do you agree?"

Everyone focused their attention on Su Yang again, and what Monty said was also data support.

"I don't agree..."

Su Yang's face was still calm, "Of course I know that our offensive scores of 109.9 per 100 rounds of sports war, but we often don't play 100 rounds, and average only 78 sports war attempts per game.

You said it was like McGrady 35 seconds 13 minutes, and then McGrady 70 seconds 26 minutes,

That data statistics only reflect offensive potential, not represent offensive ability, and cannot directly score the maximum value."

A burst of laughter broke out in the conference room instantly, and Monty's expression became a little embarrassed and she didn't say anything for a while.

"I have an idea..." McMillan suddenly spoke, "Tomorrow we will divide these two people into the same game and use their actual performance as a reference. What do you think?"
